BE A BETTER PERSON

maxresdefault

Don’t we all wish that everyone would be a better person? Do we not hope that some bad people would turn their lives around and start doing good? Do we wish our neighbor would treat us better than before‘? Do we hope that the people we meet each day would show us respect and treat us fairly? If we expect others to be nicer and fairer, should we not make the effort as well? The Golden Rule is that we should treat others the way we would want them to treat us (Luke 6:31).

Be a better person now. Do not wait until next year and make a resolution about it. Do not put it off until next week or even tomorrow. Start right now. Look at the person closest to you and show them love. Pick up the phone and call someone who would appreciate a thoughtful consideration. Help someone who needs it, and even if they do not need help, help them anyway. Perhaps they will return the favor and help someone else. If we would just try, we could turn our society around and make it a pleasant adventure each day to interact with others. Smile. Wish someone a nice day. Be courteous. Encourage others to be good, to improve. Tell people about God and His promises. Read 1 John 3:17 and meditate upon it.

“My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). Don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk. Show your love to others. “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” (1 John 4:20).

One way to turn your life around is to change your focus. When you focus upon God you become a better person. When you focus upon helping others, you become a better person. Our goal is to get people focused upon God and become people that are better. Our community would be much better if more people were better. –  Carey Scott via Findlay church of Christ, Sparta, TN

human-footprints_318-46627BEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES

As the apostle Paul closes the powerful letter to the Roman church, he spends much of the final chapter addressing various personal greetings to fellow laborers in the cause of Christ including in Romans 16:12 “Greet those workers in the Lord, Tryphaena and Tryphosa. Greet the beloved Persis, who has worked hard in the Lord.”

We don’t know Tryphaena, Tryphosa or Persis, but what is important is that Paul did, that the Roman church did and most important that the Lord God does. We do know that they were loved and cared about by those who knew them as workers for the Lord.

In our world of billions of people, who are alive now and the countless numbers who have lived on in the history of this world, try to imagine the number of beloved fellow workers who have labored for the cause of Christ and shared the good news with people they encountered. The vast number we may never know, a tiny number we could even know only by name and yet we are blessed to be given the opportunity to help support a handful of beloved brethren who seek daily to spread the gospel of grace with the lost. We know them, the congregation here at Highland Lakes knows and supports them and more importantly the Lord knows and supports them too.

Your material support has allowed us as a congregation to help them spread a spiritual blessing from the Lord in various parts of the world. We are proud our congregation is so supportive of these brethren. Your prayers, thoughts and encouragement makes this work even more productive. Please continue to all you can to encourage these fellow laborers in the kingdom. For the elders, Ken D

George Funk and his son Quintin in the labors with the Gospel Chariot Ministry which spreads God’s word village to village and country to country in Africa.

Richard and Becky Emperado who work to take the gospel to the entire nation of the Philippines and establish and strengthen the Lord’s church there.

Dennis and Sharon Welch who live as disciples of our Lord among the people of Cambodia to make disciples of those who in turn will seek to make more disciples.

PJ Krupalini and his wife Ruth who labor daily to spread the love of God, His saving word and the kingdom of God in their native India.

Sylvester Imogoh, Sylvanus Obi and Mike Udam and their families, who preach and teach and write and speak and use World Bible School to reach the people of their nation of Nigeria with God’s word and save souls and strengthen God’s church.

HOW CAN WE IMPROVE OUR SELF-ESTEEM

130551-130131

Self-esteem is a vital component in Christians growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18). Here are some things to remember that can help us improve our self-esteem.

Remember that we are created in God’s image (Gen. 1:26). God has given us humans something that nothing else of His creation has – spiritual qualities, mental and moral attributes, and self-consciousness. Because of this, we should always remember that we are of great worth to God. We should be like the lad who proclaimed of himself, “God don’t make no junk!”

Remember that nothing can cause God to lose His love for us (Rom. 8:38-39). God loves each one of us as if there were only one of us. As someone once noted, “If God had a refrigerator, our picture would be on it.” Let us constantly be reminded that God loves each of us immensely and considers us special.

Remember that all past sin is forgiven through Jesus (Rev. 1:5). If we have been baptized and are walking in the light (Rom. 6:3-6; 1 John 1:7), all past sins are no more in God’s eyes. Nothing can happen in our lives that would cause God to say, “I don’t want to forgive them.” God always considers us salvageable.

Remember the importance of proper thinking (Phil. 4:8; Pro. 23:7). It is true – we become what we think about. If we think we are worthless, we will find worthless things to fill our lives with. But the opposite is true, as well. There truly is power in positive thinking! Optimism is the route to proper mental health.

Remember the importance of associating with those who lift you up (1 Thess. 5:11). Fellow Chris-tians who are concerned for us will encourage, uplift, and support us. Spend much time with them and feed off of their joy and zeal. Enthusiasm is infectious.

Remember that with Christ, you can do anything (Phil. 4:13). Jesus is the One who can give us the opportunity and power to succeed. Trust fully in Him and His will for your life. Faith-fully follow Him.

There is no doubt that poor self-esteem is a major hindrance to spiritual growth. On the other hand, a proper self-esteem promotes spiritual growth. And the neat thing about this is that spiritual growth then enhances greater self-esteem.

July 23 – Howdy! Please pray for Richard & kids! They left on their first missionary trip as a team. They will spend the week working & visiting the church in Naval & Catarman. Lyn & Lou have materials to share with the ladies for Sunday school classes & Grant will be working with the teens.

August 1 – Richard & the kids made it home from their first missionary journey about 5am Monday morning. They were gone for a week. They visited the churches on three islands: Naval, Biliran; Baybay & Bato, Leyte; and Borongan, Samar. The girls shared teaching children Bible materials in Naval & Bato. Grant was able to speak in three places. I think he preached Sunday in Baybay. It was a good first experience for all.

OUR NEW RESOURCE FOR SHARING CHRIST

spanish-3

As members of the church, we all understand the need to share God’s Word. Sometimes we speak to people who just aren’t interested . . . and sometimes we find interested people who just can’t speak our language. In our community there are quite a few who speak Spanish as their first language — this is a barrier we have struggled with for years.

I am excited to tell you about a new ministry we are launching at Highland Lakes to help with our local evangelism. Salvador SanTillian has offered to help us develop a Spanish language ministry to reach out into our community. We hope to start a Sunday morning Bible class at 9AM in the church library that will be designed for those who speak Spanish. Of course, like any new work, the hard part is getting the word out to let people know what is available.

If you know anyone who might like to study God’s Word in Spanish, please let them know, or get their name to Salvador and he will tell them! Let’s share this good news!  — Joe

BEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES

“Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God….. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.” 3 John 5-8 (ESV)

We are blessed as a congregation willingly supporting the gospel in different ways. We want to update you on some of the efforts to support the Gospel we have recently undertaken. There are additional efforts to be mentioned later. We pray you will continue to support all these efforts, first prayerfully and thoughtfully, and then, as possible, financially. For the elders, Ken D

 We have undertaken to support the two instructors in Bible that Richard Emperado will use to train preachers in the Philippines to strengthen and establish congregations. At some point in the next few years we will fund a campaign to establish a congregation in one of the remaining provincial capital cities.

 We continue to support the Cherokee Home for Children monthly as well as making a contribution to help them obtain food and special needs for their kids.

 We partially support Amanda Chumalo to attend South Africa Bible College as she trains as a Christian to teach and counsel other women in South Africa. Kirk Eason from SABC spoke to us last week.

 A number of our young people were sent to “Heart of Texas Bible Camp” in Brady this summer with their financial fees handled by the congregation.

 We financially supported requests from Sylvester Imogoh in Nigeria to print 100,000 World Bible School tracts; to help with additional WBS mailing expenses; and to help his family with college expenses for his son, Alfred.

 We made a contribution to Sunset’s Solar Player to spreading the Gospel to Spanish speaking people by paying for four of the players. John Clinton from SIBI spoke to us earlier this year.

 We contributed needed funds for the African Christian Schools in Nigeria to meet some building needs as they help educate young people and gospel preachers.

 We are helping four Nigerian preachers, including Mike Udam, whom we regularly support, to go to the West African nation of Mali to spread the gospel in early September. Mali has less than ten total congregations.

 We are continuing our support of training gospel preachers by partially supporting Cooper and Meagan Atkeson on a monthly basis to attend Sunset International Bible Institute beginning in August for the next two years.

 We have invited Andy Baker from World Christian Broadcasting to speak to us in August about their efforts to use radio to spread the gospel around the world. We have supported this work in the past.

I LIKE MY CHURCH BECAUSE….

preach the wordShe had visited the congregation where I preached a number of times, and we had studied together a few times. The thing that turned her off was the emphasis we were placing on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, and the importance of the new birth. She brought our studies to a close by saying, “I like my church because we don’t teach any doctrine.”

Sadly, in some places, the church has turned from a “believing church” into an assembly of activities with countless programs and committees going to and fro satisfying their own desires — many of which have less to do with being “servants of the Word.”

Far too many folks have become religious consumers. They look to the church to meet their needs — and quickly look elsewhere if they feel their needs are not met. The emphasis is no longer on God and Jesus Christ, but rather on “me, myself, and mine.”

For many in our world truth has vanished — leaving it to each person to do as he/she pleases. As David F. Wells has said, “The bottom line for our modernized world is that there is no truth; the bottom line for Christian consciousness is precisely the opposite.”

James Orr, over a century ago, stated that the New Testament “comes to men with definite, positive teaching; it claims to be the truth; it bases religion on knowledge. . . A religion based on mere feelings is the vaguest, most unreliable, most unstable of all things.”

In past years, when I had the privilege of standing in Hardeman Nichols’ pulpit, he always said to me, “Preach the Word.” It seems to me, especially now, that the great need of the hour is to “preach the Word”—it remains God’s power to save!

Or to quote the inspired Jude, “Contend for the faith which was once for all entrusted to the saints” (verse 3c). ~~~ John Gibson, Little Rock, AR

Mission Cambodia News & Update, Part 3 – June 2017

Greetings dearest loved ones. We are extremely encouraged to be sharing with you the joy of ministry.

Devotionals: God has also opened doors for us to assist with some college student group devotionals on Friday evenings. We are so grateful for the opportunity to b e a part of these young lives and seeing them engage in God’s Word. Dennis recently presented a great devotional from Philippians 2 on “Christ’s Example of Humility.” Prayers of thanksgiving for God guiding us and family into new relationships and opportunities to be salt and light.

Quest for local partners: From our early experience in our new work, it is seeming more and more like much benefit could come from a local partner, an existing believer committed to making disciples. Please p ray that the Lord will provide.

Books we’re reading…

“Soul Work” – How does one become a radical Jesus follower? Where do you go to find such faith being lived out? Randy Harris — a popular college teacher and well known preacher shared his story in his search for answers.

“The Truth You Know You Know” – Do you believe that Jesus is God in human form, that He lived a sinless life on earth, was killed on a cross, rose from death, and lives today, bringing salvation and hope of eternal life to the world? You truly believe all this? Prove it. — Ken Rideout a missionary in Thailand returned to the U.S. after 44 years. He found most Christians are not equipped to address these questions. This book challenges us with thought provoking questions in equipping ourselves to answer these questions!

Thank you for praying with us…

254104_10150302902645761_6821772_n

Please continue to pray for our efforts to join God in growing and maturing His mighty Kingdom among these precious souls. Prayers God will strengthen us as we continue to become better listeners in the Cambodian language, better story -tellers of His good news and faithful children and servants of His calling. Thank you for all your support, encouragements, love and prayers — to God be the glory. We treasure your prayers and love.   Eternal love & blessings, Dennis & Sharon

UNIQUE

Unique-SEO-Companies

Jesus is unique. In fact, the phrase “only begotten Son” in the NKJV’s translation of John 3:16 could arguably be rendered,”only Son” (ESV), meaning that Jesus was God’s unique Son. Yes, those who are Christians are sons and daughters of God, but Jesus is special. There’s no one else like Him. Jesus was both God and man. He was both king and servant. He was both a lion and a lamb. He was both the high priest and the sacrifice.

No other religion has someone like Jesus. According to one fanciful but insightful story, a man became lost in his travels and wandered into a bed of quicksand. Confucius saw the man’s predicament and said, ”It is evident that men should stay out of places such as this.” Next, Buddha observed the situation and said, ”Let that man’s plight be a lesson to the rest of the world.” Then, Muhammad came by and said to the sinking man, “Alas, it is the will of God.” Finally, Jesus appeared. “Take my hand, brother,” He said, ”and I will save you.” Indeed, of all the world’s religions that have ever existed, Christianity stands alone in having a loving Savior. Christianity is unique because of Jesus.

Jesus’ uniqueness makes His church unique. He is the founder and foundation of a special assembly (Matt. 16:16-18; 1 Cor. 3:11). Nowhere else will you find a body of people who serve a founder who gave His very life to take away the sins of the world (John 1:29; Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 John 2:2). No other group of people could say that their founder left heaven itself, came to earth, lived as a man, served mankind, suffered and died for mankind, before returning to His rightful place in heaven (Phil. 2:5-11). The church belongs to Jesus. The church worships Jesus. The church preaches Jesus. Indeed, the church’s identity is found in Jesus, and it is He who makes the church so distinctive.

Welches Grapevine for the glory of God – Mission Cambodia News & Update Part 2 – June 2017

Version 2Community Relationships: This past month has been exceptionally encouraging as we continue to reach out and develop new relationships and search for ways to be effective in our ministry. Most days our activities involve morning exercise whereby we have opportunity to engage others, frequent interaction with neighbors, visiting with owners, staff and other customers at a variety of shops and food vendors, and evening walks/chats with those in our community. Our presence in the community and just striving to make ourselves available has resulted in a number of new relationships. Although building trust takes time, we are praising God for opening doors and forward movement.

Other news and highlights…

House-to-House Evangelism:

Version 2I (Dennis) am blessed to be a member of a group of Khmer guys committed to studying God’s Word, sharing the gospel to the lost and strengthening the church. Like the old days at the Bible school, recently we went house-to-house in the countryside telling the gospel story to any who would listen. I love to see their passion that all might hear and believe. Please pray that our group will be light to other believers that they might do likewise.

Bible Studies: Please join us in praising God for opening new doors for us to reach out in our ministry. This month, I (Dennis) have been able to use my gift of teaching and facilitating to some college students living in our community. It has been a blessing studying with these students. We are encouraged to see one student Hoklin, filled with enthusiasm and see his faith grow as he studies God’s Word. Hoklin is now asking questions of the text as we study through the Gospel of Mark. Please join us in prayer for Hoklin and his spiritual journey and relationship with the one and only true God.
