NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

Yes, it’s that time again.

It is the time of year when we usually commit ourselves to several worthy goals. We do this because we want to make our lives and faith better. We want to improve and that is a worthy goal. I have noticed that most of our resolutions revolve around money, health, and family.

While these are worthy goals, what would it look like if we could set the resolutions for the church or our family? I would venture to say that we would set a much more rounded, holistic set of resolutions. As I reflected on this question, I came up with a list that I think is a good start. It is not perfect by any means but these are the things I would like to see myself and others focus on.

Pray more – 1 Thessalonians 5:17. • Invest in our God-given talents – 1 Timothy 4:14-15; Matthew 25:14-30. • Get more intentional about evangelism – 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. • Care for ourselves spiritually – Philippians 3:12-16; Mark 6:31; Exodus 20:8-11. • Be willing to make the tough decisions – Acts 20:22-24. • Confront the sin in our life – Heb. 12:1-2. • Be forgiving of others and self – Matthew 6:14-15. • Love people without boundaries – 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. • Quit comparing ourselves to others – John 21:20-23; 2 Corinthians 10:12. • Read more – 2 Timothy 4:9,13. • Make family a priority – Colossians 3:18-21. • Stay focused on the Lord and His church – Acts 2:42-47. • Continue to grow – Ephesians 4:15-16; 2 Peter 3:17-17 • Treat others like we would like to be treated – Matthew 7:12; Isaiah 1:16-17. • Seek heavenly things above all else – Colossians 3:1-2.

This is a difficult list that could take a lifetime to master, and yet we are called to be Christ-like in every aspect of our life. Let’s use our resolutions to ensure that we become the best Christian possible. – Jeff Arnette, Clyde, NC

PEACE ON EARTH

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!” (Luke 2:14)

Remember Lucy and Charlie Brown? Lucy says, “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown. Since it’s this time of the season, I think we ought to bury past differences and try to be kind.” Charlie asks, “Why does it just have to be this time of the season? Why can’t it be all year long?” Lucy looks at him and exclaims, “What are you, some kind of a fanatic?” On another occasion, Lucy has a score to settle with Charlie. She chases him, shouting, “I’ll get you, Charlie Brown! I’ll get you, I’ll knock your block off!” Charlie Brown, who has been running full speed, stops, turns around and says, “Wait a minute! Hold everything! lf

We can’t carry on like this! We have no right to act this way. The world is filled with problems. People hurting other people. People not understanding other people. Now, if we as children can’t solve what are relatively minor problems, how can we ever expect to . . . “Whereupon, Lucy hits Charlie with a left to the jaw, knocking him out. Says Lucy, “I had to hit him QUICK! He was beginning to make sense.”

Surely, we all would rather have peace than strife. Surely, that makes sense! But where must the peace begin? It will not begin at the peace conference tables of this world, or through legislation. It must begin with ME. With YOU. We AS CHRISTIANS, ARE CALLED TO BE PEACEMAKERES. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9). Paul tells us, “All things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18). This is our task. Why, then, do we become upset over such petty things so often and create strife, instead of peace? There are so many truly big issues out there to be concerned with, what a pity it is to be petty.

LET US STRIVE AFTER “PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN.”

“To God be the Glory” is a constant reminder of our brother George Funk as he relays the work of the Gospel Chariot Missions and its efforts to help Africans take the gospel to the continent of Africa. What a blessing that we are able to help support this effort. Please pray for this work and as you’ll find in this note from George, there are even more reasons to give God the glory.   For the elders, Ken D

Hi Everyone,
Hope this finds you doing well. This is just a short little message to share with you some numbers I have just received and compiled from the different countries and chariots and I am blown away and never thought they would be this good, but then again, I am so human.

IT IS MORE LIKE 4,000 BAPTISMS A YEAR
As you know, our dream has always been to get to where we would be baptizing 1,000 souls a year, and then it was: Please God, help us baptize 2,000 souls and then, please Father help us reach 3,000 and now I can inform you that we are about to reach the 4,000 souls this year. God and the African brethren are up to something and we need to thank you all for making this happen. ITS CRAZY GOOD.
goschar nigeria baptismBut that is not all: What has really blown me away, is the number of Church Plantings we have been part of. 33 churches have been started this year with brethren using the Gospel Chariots. That is fantastic as brethren use the chariots for this. Statistically, they say, the most effective way to reach the world is PLANT A CHURCH.

Then over 15,000 World Bible School students were recruited to study through World Bible School in the different countries and I know its even more than that.
Brethren, this is great news and I just had to share this with you as I just received it, but also as we come to the end of another year. We hope to have our last quarter report out in the first week in January.

Merry Christmas to all and may our Good Lord be with all as we go into 2019.

Appreciate you all.
In Him,
Love
Brother George Funk

THE VALUE OF SINGING

images

I love to sing! Do you sing when no one is around to listen? Do the lyrics of a favorite song seem to stick in your mind for days or even months? Did you ever wonder why? Singing is one of the tools God gave us that not only helps us to praise God but also helps us to change our moods from sad to happy. Singing helps us celebrate but also helps us express every good human emotion: joy, sadness, love, concern and motivation. Great songs have rallied nations to accomplish greater things throughout history, especially those nations that came out of oppression into systems of greater individual liberties and freedoms.
PSALMS: Half of the Old Testament Psalms mention singing. Not only do these psalms tell us to sing but they describe the value of singing. Singing makes our hearts rejoice and teaches us thankfulness in all situations in life.
Isaiah tells us to sing to those we love and mentions that singing helps us in the mourning of our lost loved ones. But “sing for Joy” is the phrase that is repeated over and over again throughout the Old Testament. When something good happens “sing for Joy.” When enemies are defeated, or the harvest is plentiful, “sing for Joy” is what God told His people.
New Testament: When the inspired writers of the New Testament told us to sing they used the terms. “make a joyful noise”, “make melody in your hearts”. James tells us “if anyone is thankful let them sing praise to God with their heart.” Paul wrote to the Ephesians and the Colossians that they should “sing a make melody with their hearts…” Christianity is a Heart Religion based on logic, facts and faith. To expand your spiritual life, sing! “If the skies above you are gray, sing and be happy…”

Dearest family,
We continue to be the Prayer Coordinators for the Orality Network of Cambodia and are thrilled to see more involvement in various gateways used in oral teachings. Cambodian culture is rich in proverbs and old folk stories!!! Oral learners learn and remember through stories, proverbs, song and drama. Thank you Lord for ways to connect with the vast number of people who learn orally. Click on the logo below to learn more.
thumbnail1The end of July-early August we were blessed to join the Asian Mission Forum (AMF) held in Bangkok, Thailand. This annual conference/workshop has missionaries joining specifically from Asia as well as other nations. This years theme, “The City” consisted of three keywords 1) Gather 2) Pray and 3) Reach. We were all blessed by the facilitators, the keynote speakers who fed us from God’s Word, and by the common bond of love, unity, prayer and encouragement.
Prayer Circles Cambodia had another prayer ride September 23-26. Continue praying for the prayer warriors, their rides and the people of Cambodia.
Our dearest friends Sandy & Cindy Detherage came for a visit. These precious life-long friends are two very special people who are all about encouraging and building up the family of God. Sandy & Cindy are passionate about serving God and incredible, godly examples to all they meet. We appreciate the time they spent with us, their encouragement and for the ways they continue to shower us with love. To know more about them and their Barnabas Mission ministry visit: http://barnabasmission.org/.
Thank you for praying with us…
thumbnail (1)You have heard or seen how our Lord is working in Cambodia and in the hearts of the people here. We beg you to please remember to pray for healing for Chai-aeng (a young girl suffering with an illness for a long time). Also pray for various witch doctors, and for other forms of spiritual darkness and warfare that plague the people and country of Cambodia.
Please pray for our great nephew Ethan Jones and his family. About 1 month ago Ethan (12 years old) was hit by a truck while riding his go-cart. He was immediately care-flighted to the hospital. He is stable, but has been through several surgeries and facing a long recovery. Please pray for us to use wisdom and discernment in our saying “YES” and/or “NO” in regards to the vast needs here in Cambodia. We value and treasure your prayers.

OUR STRONG TOWER

Proverbs-1810-with-logo1“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10). If we imagine a strong tower, what do we see? A fortified stronghold adjoining a castle? An impenetrable fortress built to withstand all attacks of the enemy? Or perhaps a place of refuge? A tower generally allowed a view of the surrounding area from which enemy activity could be observed and monitored. It was secure and safe.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower.” He’s always there to run to when the going gets tough. We are encouraged to turn away from the enemy and retreat into Him, not to stand toe-to-toe and battle it out, but turn to Him for our protection and defense.

This might seem to be a cowardly way out. Surely, if we got ourselves into the predicament, then it’s up to us to get ourselves out. Really? But isn’t this just a matter of pride? We bravely tell ourselves, “I can take it. I am strong enough to overcome this.” And that’s precisely what the enemy uses to aggravate the situation.

“The righteous run into it and are safe.” Let’s run to the One who can help us. But isn’t this only for the righteous? Do I qualify for His protection? I don’t see myself as righteous. Scripture clearly tells us “there is no one righteous, not even one” (Roman’s 3:10). “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Yes, we are sinners. By Adam’s sin mankind was defiled (Genesis 3). We are all born into sin by hereditary contamination. And the consequence? “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and “For as in Adam all die” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Yet, this is the very reason Christ came to earth, to die for our sins. God sent Jesus, sinless, to carry our sin with Him to the cross. He died with our sins, and broke the curse over mankind by rising again from the dead (Galatians 3:13). “Through disobedience of one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). “Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11). “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is the Power of the Gospel! Through the Lord Jesus Christ, we’ve become His righteousness! Now let us all run and cling to the Lord as our strong tower and safety!

What follows is Part One of a recent report from our fellow workers in Cambodia, Dennis & Sharon Welch. Please keep this work, the Welches and the people of Cambodia, in your prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Dearest family,

Where has the time gone? In so many ways it seems like just yesterday when we departed our loved ones Stateside and started our new journey in Cambodia. On the other hand it’s hard to believe we have now lived overseas for 10+ years. That’s right—in August we celebrated our 10-year anniversary.  Our hearts have been strongly touched by the people of Cambodia and we absolutely love it here. We are incredibly grateful for each of you who have journeyed with us and stood beside us from many miles away. Thank you for partnering with us through your numerous prayers, and through your love, encouragements and support!!!

Praise & Thanksgiving…

A prayer of thanksgiving and praise on how God is allowing us to use opportunities for coaching and mentoring others throughout everyday interactions: “Lord please help us to listen well and ask good, impactful questions as we serve and walk beside others.”

We’re so thankful for our church family, fellow missionaries and co-laborers. We have been blessed richly by so many families over the years. Many of our friends and associates here are faced with transitions and decisions that affect their life, family, ministry and well-being. Please join us as we pray for peace, clarity and direction in their lives and their future ministry and work.

The love that a family has is unlike anything else. We continue to sing praises to God for the reunion of new family and old, near and far. “Thank you Lord for the gifts you have given each of us as we join together in reaching out to one another, to our loved ones and in our ministry!”

2) Love Cambodian PeopleOther news and highlights…

We are filled with zeal and encouraged as we see more Kingdom growth in our neighborhood. As we continue to reevaluate and move according to God’s will we are seeing ways we can stand beside and encourage the local leaders. Especially the Dorm Ministry in our own community as Dennis is coaching and mentoring as God prepares the hearts of young new generation guys. We are also encouraged to see additional classes we can be involved in with the dorm students.

Our local neighborhood ministry & outreach is increasing with deeper relationships. We are thankful for the times we chat with neighbors and as they open up and share their thoughts and concerns. We are connecting just by sitting with them, being a good ear and just caring. We see how God is working at softening their heart and allowing them to trust more deeply.

Grace, Peace, Love & Blessings, Dennis and Sharon

S I N K H O L E S

9031.600.418A giant sinkhole opened up in Schmalkalden, Germany, about 98 feet across and about 65 feet deep that swallowed a car, part of a garage and house. Yet, it was small compared to the sinkhole that opened up in Guatemala City in 2007. Reportedly, residents heard rumblings for weeks but no one knew why. In one day, almost instantly, a perfectly round plot of earth disappeared and left a hole more than thirty stories deep!
Experts suppose that sinkholes appear because of the movement of earth beneath what we see everyday. The problem can be caused by the movement of water, flooding or changing weather patterns. Sinkholes occur when there is literally no ground under the ground, and everything pays the price for the lack of foundation, especially what’s on the surface.
There are some Christians who are like those sinkholes; they have no foundation under the surface. When circumstances are right, their lives “cave in” and cause damages that no one would have believed or expected. Spiritual sinkholes occur because of lack of knowledge in the word of God (Heb. 5:12-14). Spiritual sinkholes occur when someone fails to act on their faith (cf. Matt. 7:24-27; 2 Pet. 1:5-11).
How does a person guard against erosion of their faith? Second Peter 1:5-7 teaches that the guard is a solid foundation of faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. “These things” repeated in verse 8, verse 9, verse 10, verse 12, and verse 15 are the surest way to solidify the foundation of faith. The promise is that one who “abounds in these things” will not be “unfruitful” or “barren,” “shortsighted,” and “will never stumble.”
Spiritual sinkholes can be avoided if there is more examination of self and examination of faith (Phil. 2:12; 2 Cor. 13:5)! Are our lives vulnerable to spiritual sinkholes brought about by lack of a firm foundation? We would all do well to thoughtfully and prayerfully make sure that we are building only on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ and His word (Matt. 7:24-27).

Gospel Chariot Missions WEST AFRICA Third Quarter Update 2018
Hi Everyone,
Hope this finds you doing well. This is our West African update and we have some wonderful news regarding West Africa and that is: we are now in the process of designing, fundraising and negotiating the upgrading of the Liberian mini chariot to a Big Chariot that will travel into not just Liberia, but Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea Bassau, making it 6 countries! And the good news is, we have a $75,000.00 matching fund once again, meaning we only need another $75,000.00 to proceed with this impossible venture, but with God all things are possible and He continues to blow my mind as we reach countries we never thought were possible. THANK YOU, LORD, AND THANK YOU, TO OUR MATCHING BROTHER AND SISTER AND ALL OF YOU WHO MAKE THIS WORK WHAT IT IS.
41946236_2017133678305191_404723800618303488_nThis is so exciting, but as I sit here I could tell you of some amazing developments taking place in other parts of Africa where we are making amazing breakthroughs in spreading the Wonderful Name of Jesus and one area is the DRC, that is Congo, where we have struggled to get into for years and are now busy sending a Congolese brother back to Congo, fully trained and ready to work out of Goma, a town ideally situated. Also have another brother leaving for Namibia to help us in our Bible School there and also trying to get him a work visa to help oversee the school. Also some amazing developments in South Africa as we are making plans of moving our ministry out of the inner city and more out of town to the west, where communities are popping up all over the place. That said, we will be leaving behind a thriving Downtown Pretoria Church of Christ.
41911890_2017133751638517_879768752881664000_nPS, Brethren it is soooooo hard to fundraise and find funds and we really, really need to say how amazing this is and how God has been so good through you all…….Below shows some updates reported by the team in West Africa.

YOUR THANKSGIVING LIST

The apostle Paul was a thankful man. He was thankful to Jesus for putting him into the ministry (1 Timothy 1:12), for the faith of his fellow Christians (Col. 1:3-4), for those who risked themselves for his ministry (Rom. 16:4), for salvation (1 Cor. 15:57), and indeed for all things (Eph. 5:20).

download (3)

What sort of “thanksgiving list” would you put together? Perhaps it would include your family, your home, your local congregation of the Lord’s church, and your job, in addition to the spiritual blessings Paul mentions.

download (2)

Whatever the case maybe, the important thing is to remember to be thankful. Because ultimately, God is the source of all blessings (James 1:17).
