WHEN YOU HURT

2013 04 28 I Phone 012During the last decade of the famous artist’s life, Renoir was confined to his home because of his crippling arthritis. His friend Matisse visited him daily. In spite of his torturous pain Renoir kept painting. In fact, he did so almost to his dying day.

On one occasion when Renoir was struggling with every brush stroke, Matisse said to him, “Auguste, why do you continue to paint when you are in such agony?” To which Renoir replied, “The beauty remains, the pain passes.”

“Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete (mature).” ~ James 1:2-4

A wise friend, who has gone through a tough time, recently told me how blessed he felt from God. His struggles opened up the way for him to grow spiritually in a way that he had never grown before. Another friend remarked that he never knew how loved and respected he was until a difficult challenge came and his friends rallied around him.

Few things in life will draw us closer to God than the realization of our utter dependence upon Him. We need God, perhaps now more than ever. What seems to be bad and hurtful is sometimes the most valuable thing, because of what it teaches. Suffering leads us to count our blessings.

God is good, even when we do not understand all the reasons for the things that happen. Let us place our trust in the One Who sees and knows all. He will do what is best for us. Let us lay our souls, our hearts, and our lives into His hands.

A CALL FOR TEACHERS

2013 04 19 IPhone 003This congregation is blessed to have a group of faithful Christian women who devote themselves to teaching God’s Word to the children. Each Sunday and Wednesday young minds are introduced to the mind of God by these good ladies. We may not have a large number of children at Highland Lakes, but we do have some! . . . And the few we have deserve to learn about Jesus!

The mixture of ages among our children is such that we are in need of another teacher on Sunday morning. Young people learn better when the instructor is on their level. So, we are sending out a call to the congregation for teachers to help in the children’s ministry. If you look at the world and our nation today . . . you will see why young people need to understand God and the standards of His Word!

If you would be willing to teach a class, or just assist one of our current teachers, please talk to Joe or one of the elders about it. God has placed an opportunity before us . . . it is our job to use that opportunity to God’s glory!

“Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord” (Psalm 34:11). — Joe

Two Important Appeals

♥ We are in great need of more Bible class teachers for children for Wednesday evening and especially for Sunday morning. If we have more teachers or helpers, who after a while may become the teachers, then we will be able to teach in rotation and nobody will be overburdened. If, with a willing heart, you want to graciously volunteer, please tell Joe or one of the elders.

♥ Cambodian children are being fed nutritious snacks from two “Snack Trucks”. Both of those are old and in great need of being replaced. Cost for both is $16,000. The elders are willing to send $1,000 out of our contribution fund. Would you be willing to add to that? On your check, please make a note: “For Cambodia”.

♥ Thanks to all who will help with one or even both of these two good works!

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” Hebrews 13:16)

Thank You!

Dear Christian Friends, Thank you for your prayers during my cancer surgery and recovery. The doctor said I am getting back to my old ornery self. I owe it all to Christ and prayers from Christians like you. Sincerely, Jack Mabe

VISITING FOR THE MASTER (VISITATION PROGRAM)

Team #2 (leaders: Cary & Brenda Miller) will meet on Wednesday, April 17th, at 6:30 pm in the Library for their assignments.

Notice this Change!

Bob Foster has a new e-mail address. Contact the church office for the information to update your directory.

An Excellent Project!

To help us as a church encourage one other with notes to each other, the Ladies Bible class suggests a method. On the table in the hallway to the fellowship room, there will be two glass containers with the numbers #1 and #2. Container #1 will contain the names of people who worship here. If you would like to encourage someone from this group by writing a note, draw one or more names from glass container #1; write an encouraging note to that person; place the note on the table; and place the name in container #2. When we have gone through all of the names in container #1, container #2 will become container #1, and we will go back through the names again. We will try this for the remainder of April and all of May. May God be honored in our work.

THE WORST SHIPWRECK

2013 04 19 IPhone 004If asked what is the worst shipwreck of all times, what would you reply? There are some monumental and legendary ones: the Lusitania (1915); the Andrea Doria (1956); the Edmund Fitzgerald (1975). Perhaps you would say, “The Titanic.” While certainly perhaps the most well-known, the sinking of the Titanic (1912) was not the world’s worst shipwreck.

On April 27, 1865 the steamship Sultana (with a capacity of only a few hundred people) was transporting some 2,500 former Union prisoners of war home at the end of the Civil War. The ship’s boiler exploded, killing 1,500 men, just as their ordeal was about to end.

In 255 B.C. off the coast of Camarina, Sicily, a Roman fleet of 264 ships was caught in a violent storm. Of those, 184 of the ships were driven onto rocks and sank. The death toll from this disaster is thought to have been 80,000 to 100,000.

However, even these (labeled the worst shipwrecks in American and world history, respectively) were not the worst shipwrecks. Sadly, the worst shipwreck has happened countless times and is sure to happen again. Paul spoke of it to Timothy, 1Timothy 1:18-19, “Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.”

There is no greater disaster than a shipwrecked faith. Many things can cause such. Jesus spoke of those who are choked by the cares and riches of this world (Matthew 13:22). Demas forsook Paul because of his love for the present world (2 Timothy 4:10).

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Conforming to the world (Romans 12:2) and the love for the same (1 John 2:15-17) have likewise caused the way to be littered with the carcasses of once strong ships. Many are its causes.

Contrary to the “once saved, always saved” position, one can so sin as to be eternally lost. In this same context to Timothy, Paul mentioned two by name — Hymenaeus and Alexander. These two have made shipwreck of their faith. What about you? Is your ship faithfully sailing? Or, is it headed for the dangerous shore line? Perhaps it already lies mangled on the rocks and reef. Determine to set your helm toward faithfulness and avoid the worst shipwreck of all. “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). — BULLETIN DIGEST

News from the Food Pantry

Our volunteers at the Food Pantry are staying busy. You may have noticed in the bulletin that last week 144 & this week 153 individuals were fed. Times are hard for many in our zip code region. Those who are served by us must be documented as living in this area, in Kingsland.

It takes quite a bit of money to purchase food items at the Food Bank in Austin and also at HEB locally. In the last 3 months, our congregation spent $486.23 in January, $625.20 in February, and $588.34 in March, for a total of $1,699.97 for the first quarter of 2013.

In March alone, 159 households with 414 individuals were served. Twenty-one of those households were new. 2,423 lbs. of food was purchased and an additional 1,485 lbs. were bought at additional sources. Brethren & sisters, we have a lot of people in our community who are in need of basic sustenance!

We are rejoicing that we are able to help those who are in need. We are only doing what God expects us to do in our time, what He has always expected His people to do in previous days.

“He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but whosoever is kind to the needy honors God” (Proverbs 14:31).

“All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I (Paul, also Barnabas) was eager to do” (Galatians 2:10).

You can help the Food Pantry with these items: tooth paste, tooth brushes, dish detergent and canned meats.

A Special Prayer Request

Dear praying brethren,

Eveling Garcia, wife of BICA/Nicaragua’s director, Erick Garcia, has a very aggressive bladder cancer. The doctors said that God needed to be with her for her to overcome. I beg you to beg God on behalf of Eveling Garcia, the mother of two little girls. If you have any medical contact, help us to find a chemotherapy medicine called—bcg, a liquid injection to fight cancer. Maybe you know a doctor, pharmacist, or hospital that can help. Call me if you can help at 281-252-4444. Please, please pray!

A son of the Great Physician,

George Hall

THE WORD OF LIFE

How much of your time is committed to reading Scripture?

How much is God’s Word included in your everyday life? Does it rest on the foundation of your knowledge and understanding of His Word?

For some, being led and counseled and nourished by Scripture is a normal, healthy discipline practiced each and every day. But, speculating on this, we can say that this is not always the case.

It is interesting that we will readily testify to a perceived reality of God’s Word as a foundation part of who we are as believers, and yet what we generally mean by “foundational” is our understanding of Scripture, rather than allowing the message to routinely speak into our lives.

In gratitude the Psalmist acknowledges, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). In reliance he confesses, “I have hidden your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

In order for Scripture to be “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path”, so that we might have the philosophy of God’s Word in such a way that it is wholly “hidden in our hearts” (with the goal of total faithfulness to our God), we must continually and intentionally use our time to allow our Father ministering to us through the Word. Certainly, He ministers and speaks to us through His Spirit and through our life experiences, but it all must rest on our knowledge of His Word. This is formative and central in our lives to what God intents our lives to be.

So as we read the Bible, what is our purpose? What is our aim? What is our goal? How we approach Scripture is crucial. Do we read God’s Word so that we may master it? Or so that we might be mastered by it? Do we study so as to gain support of our presuppositions? Or so that we might be filled with God?

At the beginning of each new year, many may have made renewed commitments to read and study God’s Word. But as time goes on . . . ! Then it is very important that all of us need to encourage each other in this. Therefore we need to pray that we will be committed to being a people of Scripture-knowledge (continually being fed by Almighty God through His Holy Word), but have the goal, in our reading and esp. study, to have as the utmost goal a closeness and faithfulness to God.

God honors genuineness and faithfulness. Let our love of Him lead us in this. — from an article by Jason Reeves, Tyler, TX (adapted)

MARCH 24, 2013 THIS WEEKS NEWS

2013 03 27 Cannon 039New Deacons To Be Installed Sunday, March 24th

Three faithful men have been suggested as new deacons. They are Cary Miller, Don Welch and David Zoller. This morning these men will be installed as new servants of this congregation. They are already very much involved in different areas of work which makes them an excellent addition to the other four deacons.

We pray God’s greatest blessings on all of our deacons, elders, and on all the endeavors of the Highland Lakes congregation of the Lord.

50th Anniversary March 31st!

Have you made your plans to be part of this celebration next Sunday? Can you think of former members who would enjoy spending this day with us? Give them a special and personal invitation. Also, we will be needing additional parking spaces. Those of us, who are able to walk a farther distance, are being asked to find a parking place behind the building, so that there will be extra parking spaces for our visitors. Thank you in advance!

With Sympathy

We are expressing our heartfelt condolences:

To Larry Moore and Evelyn. Larry’s brother, Doyle Moore, passed away on Friday, March 15th, in the early morning hours. A memorial service will take place on Sunday, March 31th, at the Christian Church in Balch Springs, TX.

To Billy Hazlewood. His sister, Catharine Byrd of Belton, Texas, passed away last week. Funeral services took place on Monday, March 18th.

Our love and prayers go out to all the families and friends.

Food Pantry Needs!

Empty egg cartons are very much needed. We receive eggs in bulk from the Food Bank in Austin. The eggs need to be divided and put in cartons that hold a dozen. Please bring the cartons from your own personal egg purchases. Thank you for your help!
