ABUNDANT SECURITY IN CHRIST

The Youth Minister, Cleve Stafford, at the White Rock church of Christ in Dallas, Texas, wrote this article recently, about the “Doomsday Preppers” phenomenon. He continued by asking what it would take to prepare for a different scenario – the return of Jesus. In this article he is looking at that in more depth:

If “preppers” are to be fully prepared, they need to have a written plan of what to do and when. First, they would need water. They would also need food to sustain them and medicine in the case of injuries. Next, they would need weapons to protect them from marauding looters. They would also need reliable, trustworthy family and friends to assist them in the quest to survive. Another all-important survival need would be a “dug-out” location, which is a place of safety and security. The only thing that no doomsday “prepper” has is an absolute foolproof plan.

Let’s look at the “Spiritual Prepper”. We too need a plan in writing. Fortunately, we have been given that in the form of the Bible which tells us what to do and how. Next on the list is water, of which we have plenty in the form of “living water” (John 4:10). As for food, the Word can feed the young with milk and the more mature can ingest the spiritually solid food (I Cor. 3:2; Heb. 5:12-14). We will also need medicine. God’s Word can heal us from our iniquities but we have something the physical “preppers” do not have: we can die and then live again (Rom. 6:4-5) – now that is a second chance worth getting excited about!

Any self-respecting “preppers” arm themselves to the proverbial tooth to be protected from the “outside” world and we should naturally do the same. As Christians, we are armed with a weapon that is even sharper than a two-edged sword (Heb. 4:12). We have an abundance of armor to go with that weapon (Eph. 6:10-20). We would also need a dugout location where we can be safe and secure among trusted friends, which we have in the form of the church.

“Prepper teams” need leaders, and we have those as well. The elders are to shepherd us (I Peter 5:1-2) under the direct leadership of Jesus (Col. 1:18). The only question left is, “Do we have a foolproof plan?” Yes, we do! You see, unlike that of the “doomsday prepper”, our future is guaranteed through the redemptive sacrifice of Christ on the cross when He overcame death, thereby securing for us a definitive victory in the future.

Not only has He provided us with a future, but He has gone ahead to prepare a place for us…and will come and get us (John 14:3). How cool is that? Want more security? Our Lord and Savior will never leave us, nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5b).

Are we not protected and blessed “to the hilt”, can we not live confidently without fear of the future?

DO CHRISTIANS EVER RETIRE?

Retired or retreaded…growing older has its benefits as well as its own special temptations. We look forward to retirement to do those special things, such as travel and enjoyable activities, which a job has kept from us.

There is a temptation to bring the same mindset into our service for our Lord. We become like the man in Luke 12:16-21 who had done well and decided to retire, take it easy and passively walk through the rest of life. Jesus called the man a “fool”. Many older Christians, it seems, have retired when actually, perhaps, their need is really to be retreaded! They have said, “We’ve given our years in teaching and have served in different ways, now it’s time to let the younger ones serve.” This may be a noble gesture, but where does the Bible say we’ve reached our “quota” of service or our tenure of teaching?

Is there a retirement age in Christianity or does God just call us home? Did He not give us gifts to be used in His service and a life which we have consecrated to Him? Then we shall never retire! We shall never stop serving, neither stop teaching for God has placed us in His body where He wants us, and we will be used in the acts of His work ’until in death we do part’ from this earthly life.

If we become tired, let us be retreaded. Let’s put on new shoes, perhaps serving in a new ministry or with a new spirit and dedication in an old familiar service. Everyone is essential in the building up of the body in love.  — Mike Schroder, Tipton church of Christ, Tipton OK

SERVICE OR CIRCUS?

2013 10 26 IPhone 007A man once stated that one of the greatest disappointments of his childhood was when he saw a tent going up. He thought it was a circus, but upon investigation, he discovered it was a revival meeting. He further stated that one of the greatest disappointments of his adult life came when he saw several Christians putting up a tent.  He thought it was a revival service, but upon further investigation discovered it was little more than a circus.

Have you noticed lately how reverence has given way to merriment, fear has given way to familiarity, congregational singing has given way to performances, Bible teaching has given way to drama, and preaching the gospel has given way to after dinner speeches in the assemblies of the saints? Nearly anything and everything that brings applause, draws a crowd, increases the contribution, satisfies the young people, and has been “baptized” to being sanctioned by some churches today.

However, is there not a sanctity and sacredness to worship that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of entertainment and cultural relevancy? I for one believe there is.  No question about it, the circus has come to town! But this is one circus I don’t plan to attend.

“. . .if then I am the Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence? Says the LORD of hosts. . .” (Malachi 1:6)  Service or Circus?  Paul Nygard, Camden Ave. Church of Christ, Parkersburg, WV

WIDOWS’ END OF YEAR RELIEF APPEAL

Widows’ End-of Year Relief Appeal—2013

Dear Brethren,

This is another appeal on behalf of the widows in my area of work — which is comprised of the five counties of the Northern end of Edo state (there are a total of 18 counties in Edo state; my work covers five and some part of a sixth county). In the past two years, some of the widows on my list have died, but some have also been added — as a result of the death of some men and the conversion of some who are already widows. Right now, we still have about 89 widows on the list. From of these, we now have seven widows less (those who have received the mills and machines we recently purchased). But that still leaves some 82 who need attention.

The plan is, if we have help, we want to buy some food for these widows before the end of this year. This (Xmas) time is usually a very hard period for most Nigerians. First of all, that would be the dry season—when food supply is naturally short. And with the combined effect from the flooding that has affected Nigeria for the second year in a row, and then we KNOW that it would be harder for most people.

We did this last year, and the result was great. We hope you would avail us of some money this year again, so that we can give some more relief to these helpless ones among us in the brotherhood.

In the light of the above, I am sending this appeal to you at this time again — to ask your financial support for this work.

If you have anything to send for this purpose, then please, contact Douglas M. Wheeler at the Westside church of Christ in Norman, OK.

I am praying for your favorable consideration of this appeal. I am counting on you!!! Thank you very much!!!   In Christian love, Sylvester

(Sylvester works with our congregation in spreading the Gospel in his native country of Nigeria, in West Africa).

DISCONNECTED FRUSTRATION

Are we faithful to God because our innermost desire it to be faithful to Him? Are we faithful to God because we experience a closeness and tranquility with Him that we have come to conclude exists in no other? Are we faithful to God because unfaithfulness would create angst and turmoil in our divine connection to Him? Are we faithful to God because faithfulness pleases Him?

There is a disconnect that exists between religion and faith. There is a smugness and ego that Satan utilizes to lull Christ’s followers into thinking that somehow we have arrived. Somehow we’ve got it all together. Somehow we’ve got it figured out (and think this through . . . somehow we can have God figured out?!) That somehow if we’re “following the rules” (our understanding of the rules) we are living up to God’s desire for our lives. This immature perspective of faith is ultimately fueled by Satan. Because he can con us into thinking that relationship with God is a system of belief, or a structure of “do’s” and “don’ts”, we will never reach our potential as those who have been forever transformed by the message of Jesus. As those who are continually transformed by the Spirit of Christ.

Relationship is deeper. Love and adoration in a relationship comes not from that which is external, but rather from that which is deep within the heart. This is true of any relationship. But especially in and of our relationship with God. Genuine. Whole-hearted. Deep faith. Abiding faith. Maturity of faith, that is what we are after.

This disconnect does not only impact us in a negative way. How can we communicate the relevance of Christ in our lives to others, if this relevance is lost on us? And if the un-churched have one complaint it is that the church is not relevant. Is it possible that we have some responsibility in that? May we glorify God in our lives! — from an article by Jason Reeves, West Erwin church of Christ, Tyler, TX
