THE CHURCH OF “ME”

lets_talk_about_me_myself_tshirt-r8ee06c571012416c8c29a718d760351f_vj7b7_324“Let’s talk about me!” insists a country song of a few years back. For millions, that is more than a song — it is a whole philosophy of life! It’s the credo of their religion; the nursery of their personality; the driving force of their existence. And many modern churches have shamelessly opted to go along. They recruit members under the banner: “Have it your way!”

This arrogant egoism permeates almost every area of modern life. It is the appeal of most advertising. One commercial simpers, “This I do for me.” Another opines, “I’m worth it.” Best-selling books advise us on how to feel good about ourselves, get what we want, and do what we please. Even what goes under the name of religion today panders to personal preference: What I like…..What I want…..My own felt needs…..The impact of this mentality can readily be seen:

  1. In Society. A pervading atmosphere of selfishness poisons many social relationships. Marriages disintegrate because husbands and wives are unwilling to alter their ego-centered demands. Friendships are sacrificed to the ruthless drive of enlarging one’s self. The nation faces political chaos because every special interest is determined to bend policy its own way! How completely unlike the Christian concept of love which “does not insist on its own way!” (1 Corinthians 13:5). The focus of Christ-like living is: “Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor” (1 Corinthians 10:24).
  2. In Morality. The “Church of Me” approach of life exalts the individual as the final authority in everything. There are no absolutes and the individual is left to determine “what is right for himself.” Ernest Hemingway summed up this approach to morality when he wrote: “What is moral is what you feel good after.” The Bible insists, however, that morality has an absolute basis in the absolute holiness of God (1 Peter 1:15). The folly of “me-based morality” is well summed up in the Bible warning, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12).
  3. In Religion. Ours is an age when personal preference is allowed to trump Divine commandment! This is well illustrated by an ad which appeared for a new church in Santa Rosa, California, which proclaimed: “We are basically Protestant, but with a few minor differences” ….. meaning, gay people, smoking of marijuana and other godless habits are readily accepted there. Jesus rejected the “Church of Me” approach to religion when He said, “In vain do they worship me, teaching the doctrines of men” (Matthew 15:9).

The Bible warns that self makes a very inadequate God! Christ alone is deserving of our worship as “the living eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God” (1 Timothy 1:17). The litmus test of authentic Christianity is: “Father, not My will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

NOVEMBER 22, 2015 WEEKLY NEWS

NEW MEMBER

Linda Ortega let us know last Sunday that she wanted to place membership with us. She formerly attended the Cuba church of Christ in Alamogordo, NM. Linda, we welcome you to our fellowship here at the Highland Lakes church of Christ, hoping to be of mutual encouragement in our service to our Lord Jesus Christ! Linda’s address information is available from the church office.

THIS IS THE TIME OF THE YEAR . . .

. . . when we take up a cookie collection for Cherokee Home for Children. The Ladies class will pack them up on Wednesday, December 2nd, the last class before the end of the year. If you are able to bake, those home-made treats are very welcome by all. But good store-bought cookies are also well accepted. Make sure that your contribution is in the fellowship room before Wednesday, December 2nd, 10 a.m.

THANK YOU NOTE

A BIG thank you to those who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the ladies coffee a success: Dorothy Peterson, Doris Foster, Gail Darnell, Norma Bryan. Also, thanks to all those ladies who gave up a few hours of their Saturday to “visit” with their sisters in Christ and welcome newcomers as well as to those who also contributed to the refreshments. The food, as always was very good, but the visiting was OUTSTANDING! There has been a request from some ladies that this unstructured gathering be a more frequent affair. We will see what we can do! — Paula

OUR HOLIDAY FELLOWSHIP MEAL & PARTY . . .

. . . on Sunday evening, December 13th in the Fellowship Room. This is always a special time of good food, fellowship and other fun activities. Again, we will collect stuffed animals/dolls with no loose parts (e.g. attached eyes) that young children could pull off and injure themselves! Those toys are for the Seton Care-A-Van. They give them to children who need to be comforted in difficult situations. Please, bring those toys to the fellowship room before December 13th Thank you for your help!

SPECIAL WORSHIP, SPECIAL CONTRIBUTION

Sunday morning, November 22nd, we will not only worship our heavenly Father, we will also translate our love and respect for Him into a special effort. There is a special program page by the bulletin on table in the back. You will notice that we will take up a special contribution for the Solar Players along with the regular one. This special one will buy more of the Solar Players that are used to spread the “Good News” to many who need a Savior (see Beautiful Footnotes below). Please mark your check “for Solar Players”. Thank you for your generosity!

“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you” John 6:27.

Sunset International Bible Institute’s Solar Event Phase II approaches completion.

A trip to Kenya, East Africa, this fall, delivered over 350 solar players and brought the total number of players sent in 2015 to Nigeria, Kenya, and South Sudan to 1,500. Individuals from Sunset delivered the players in Nairobi and in Eastern Kenya. They were able to witness what God is doing in that country and celebrated 32 baptisms in the brief time they were there. Two final trips will take the remainder of the solar players including those to Ethiopia in the Amharic language.

The solar players in Kenya are making a big impact. Stanley Jumabarasa is an evangelist in the western interior of Kenya. He has already been making plans of how to use his solar player to strengthen the church and teach people to be “New Testament Christians.” Issac Kibor sold some of his livestock to travel over 12 hours on a bus to receive his solar player. Since Issac is unable to use his legs, he walks everywhere on his hands protected by flip-flops dragging his feet behind him. He too will use the solar player to help spread the gospel in Kenya.

By the end of this year over 2000 solar players will have been distributed in four African nations targeted in Phase II of this project. The funds to pay for these devices are still being raised. Our congregation continues to have the opportunity to support this work in the special contribution this Sunday, November 22nd. Please give financially, if you can, but more importantly remember to pray for the advancement of the Gospel through this additional tool that God has made available. For the Elders, Ken D

UNIQUE EXPRESSIONS

human-interaction“And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude (countenance, KJV) was not what it had been” (Gen. 31:2). Jacob could tell by the look on Laban’s face that he was not happy with him. The expression on our face may say more than we realize. God made us social creatures who communicate not only through words but also through subtle and unintentional outward displays. Our facial expressions, gestures, postures, and other forms of body language say something.

Our tone of voice conveys a message along with our words. “A poor man pleads for mercy, but a rich man answers harshly” (Prov. 18:23). A poor man asks because he is in no position to demand; a rich man is harsh with people because they are a bother to him. The older men advised Rehoboam to speak kindly to the people (1 Kings 12). The king ignored their counsel and followed the advice of the young men. He spoke harshly to the people and the nation divided. How you say a thing does matter.

Our modern devices are wonderful in some ways, but they fall short in overall human communication. You can’t hear a friend’s tone in a text message. You don’t see a loved one’s face in an e-mail. It can be easy to misunderstand or misjudge especially when the messages are short. These avenues of communication can become an excuse for not sitting down with a person to look each other in the eye and work out a problem. It’s easier to fire off a text than it is to face someone in person.

Yes, there are times when it’s wise to write before you meet with someone to work out a problem. Paul did this with the Corinthians. He had planned to return to Corinth but he decided to postpone that trip. Why? “This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh” (2 Cor. 13:10). He didn’t hide behind this letter, however. He was more than ready to face them in person.

What has happened to just plain talking with each other? There is nothing wrong with using computers to communicate, but overusing them is not good. Young people today know how to read the face of a smart phone, but they can’t read the face of people. They know how to send texts, pictures, and videos, but they don’t know how to share their feelings personally. This trend will bring more negative results. These young people are not being taught how to detect the body language of a liar. They are not learning to regard the rights and feelings of others because they are so busy looking down at their device that they rarely notice the people around them. They will have trouble communicating in a close, meaningful way in marriage. God made us as we are and we must not forget our need for that special human element in our relations to each other.  Kerry Duke, West End church of Christ, Livingston, TN

FROM SITTING STILL TO BEING STILL

be_stillPsalm 46 has a lot of oft quoted verses, certainly including verse 10a which says, “Be still and know that I am God.” I would invite you to get out this chapter and have a deeper look at what all surrounds this verse. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (verse 1). “The nations rage, the kingdoms totter” (verse 6). “He brakes the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots with fire” (verse 9).

“Be still” isn’t just a quick invitation to prayer, though it’s never inappropriate to pause and pray. This Psalm is addressing a people at war, always battling, always strategizing, always fearing what they can’t control, whether it be nature or nations. God invites us not only to sit still, but to be still and trust Him.

Being still is not a pause, but a way of living. Trust God. Remember Him when you lay down and when you wake up. Do your best, but rely on God to open doors and fight your battles. Being still means giving up control and trusting that God is good and that He will keep His promises. ~~ Mark Adams, Kings Crossing church of Christ, Corpus Christi, TX

VISITING FOR THE MASTER

VISITATION PROGRAM Combined Teams 1 & 2 (leaders: Joe & Teri Winnett and Cary & Brenda Miller) will meet on Wednesday, November 11th at 6:30 pm in the library for their assignments. Next Visitation time for the combined teams: Wednesday, December 9th.

A LADIES COFFEE

On Saturday, November 14th, our ladies will meet for a “Coffee” in the fellowship room starting at 10:00 a.m. Some of our ladies attend quite regularly the weekly Bible class; some are not able to do that for various reasons.

So, this upcoming coffee is meant to help all ladies to get better acquainted with each other. It will be a time of visiting, just a social gathering, an unstructured “come-and-go” affair. There will be coffee and other drinks as well as a few coffee cakes.

Ladies, make your plans to come and enjoy this good and beneficial time together!

WITH SYMPATHY

Former member, Ruby Berens, passed away in Austin on October 29th. Memorial services took place at the Westover church of Christ in Austin. A private burial took place at Park Road 4, Lake Hills.  Our love, prayers and sympathy go out to all in the family and to those who knew and loved her.

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS

The Food Pantry is in need of plastic bags. It is very important that those plastic bags are functional for their use. Please, do not bring plastic bags that have been used for produce! There is usually moisture left that is unhealthy. Also, check those plastic bags for holes! They are not usable. Also, the Pantry cannot use paper bags. Try to recycle them in a different way.  As always, thank you for your attention and co-operation!

footprints-hiJesus said – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” Matthew 28:19-20 ESV

GOSPEL CHARIOT SOUTH AFRICA REPORT

The Big South African Gospel Chariot is finishing the year off with a bang. Bongani wrote the following:  He reports that a congregation has been started in Mthwalume, South West of Johannesburg, where 5 people where baptized, one being a school teacher and who has opened her house for the Church to worship and have Bible studies.   On Sunday we had more than 6 people attend the service. We also went and visited and prayed with others.

This is the area where we struggled to get a place to put up the tent, the Chiefs of the area refused us to put the tent up. So we used one of the brothers’ house to put the tent up. God always opens a way for His message!!!

Amen Bongani. God surely does open door after door. Let’s all pray for that church planting. It’s easy baptizing and starting a house church, but it’s really hard following up and visiting that church to mature it and that’s where we need brethren to help. Thank you to those who do help us. We appreciate you. Thank you Lord.

Keep our fellow laborers in your prayers as the gospel is spread and disciples are made. For the elders, Ken D

TEACH? ME?

Boy (8-9) holding apple behind back, looking at teacher in classroom, focus on boy

Yes, you! Why?

Let me tell you:

You profess to love your country, yet you see national decay. Why? Have you considered that we are not teaching our children as we should? The forefathers in America regarded education and religion as the two cornerstones of sound preparation for living. They taught the Bible in public schools because they conceived the principles of righteousness needed to be inculcated in boys and girls.

Who is teaching righteousness today? The home? The church? Besides these two, can you think of any institution other than ‘church schools’ doing it?

Do you remember Topsy from Uncle Tom’s Cabin? Topsy seems completely perverse and corrupted. She steals, she lies, disobeys, and lazes about. No punishment has any effect on her. Why? She had been raised without any moral or intellectual instruction.

Any child will grow and develop whether that one is taught or not taught, but growth and development will be without goal, direction, purpose except as some sort of outer control is exercised. Otherwise, one will be like Topsy who “jest grow’d”.

Phillips Brook rightly said, “The race moves upward or downward on the feet of children.” And again, “Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work” — John Trainer, M.D.

The key to better families, churches, and nations lies in teaching God’s word. The early church turned the world upside down by following the instruction of Jesus to go and teach. The prophets said, “They will be taught by God”. Then Jesus added, “Every one who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me” (John 6:45). And look how the world was blessed!

Through the years I have noticed how little children love their teachers. I have heard them whisper, and sometimes almost boldly shout to their mothers, “That’s my teacher!” And I have seen these little ones search, and run, to their teachers to give and receive a hug. It’s a precious site to behold. What an impact these teachers make on young minds and hearts. When you consider that “the influence of a good teacher can never be erased,” don’t you want to be one? I thought so! – John Gipson, Windsong church of Christ, Little Rock, AR

Report from SIBI on the Solar Player Project

One of the biggest stories of 2015 is the success of Sunset International Bible Institute’s Solar Player Phase II. As this is written, we have almost reached our $1million funding goal and are 75% completed in distributing 2,000 more solar players. Perhaps most significant is our first “foreign language” version of the solar player as 500 are being prepared for Ethiopia in the Amharic language.

As Phase II finishes, Sunset is already laying the groundwork for Phase III. Phase III of the Solar Event will be in Spanish. The process has already begun by collecting all of the material that Sunset has done over the past few decades in Spanish. Many years ago, Miguel Arroyo voiced the translation of the courses from English to Spanish. Other classes have been recorded by our partner school, Texas International Bible Institute, led by Steve Austin and Kevin Montgomery. All of that material is being compiled and edited to be in the right format for the audio menus on the solar players. In the coming months Arthur Puente, the International Dean of Latin America, will be determining the most effective places to distribute the solar players in Central and South America. We will be asking for brotherhood involvement and partnership in that exciting venture.

The funds from Phase I and Phase II continue to be a resource to help get the arduous task of translation accomplished. Languages for continuing phases are being investigated and follow-up progress with the seven countries that have already received solar players continues. The vision of the Solar Events is to help the “Sonlight” spread to the most remote places on earth. It uses the power of the sun to teach about the Son. It has begun in the dark continent of Africa, but as the sunlight drives away the darkness across the globe, the vision is for the Light of God’s Word to spread around the world.

Keep this exciting work in your prayers.  For the elders, Ken D

UN-DENOMINATIONAL CHRISTIANS

chURchDr. Hans Kűng, a well-known European theologian published a wave-making book a few years ago which was entitled simply “The Church”, in which he lamented the fact that the established church has lost its way, has become bogged down in tradition, and has ceased to be what Christ intended it to be. The only remedy, according to Dr. Kűng, is to go back to the Scriptures to see what the church was like in the beginning and then to recover in the 21st Century the essence of the original church! In other words, we need to return to the practice of un-denominational Christianity!

I am personally convinced that un-denominational Christianity is possible — that it is possible to be members of the church of our Lord without being a part of any denomination! To recapture un-denominational Christianity in the 21st Century, then a few indispensable things are necessary:

 The unity of all believers on the basis of the Bible alone.

 The replacement of all human creeds and confessions of faith with the Bible as the only binding rule of faith and practice for the church.

 The recognition of Christ as the only Head of the church.

 The autonomy and independence of every local congregation.

 The use of only scriptural names to refer to God’s people.

 The restoration of the government, worship, and terms of membership practiced by the New Testament church.

Is Un-denominational Christianity really possible in our faction-torn, sect-ridden religious world? Many would say, “No!” They would dismiss the very idea of “Un-denominational Christianity” as an anachronistic, unrealistic dream. But the Bible teaches otherwise! Consider:

  1. The Church established by Jesus in New Testament times was un-denominational. He conceived of His church in terms of a unified, single entity (Matthew 16:18). He prayed for the perpetual unity of His followers (John 17:20,21). Clearly, the division of His church was not something that He intended or approved.
  2. We have the same seed today which produces un-denominational Christianity in the 21st Century. The seed is the word of God (Luke 18:11). We were born again by the seed (1 Peter 1:23). Seed — if it is viable — will always produce the same harvest no matter where or when it is planted.
  3. We can be un-denominational today if we will turn from men and their doctrines, creeds and opinions and turn to Christ and His word. The Bible only will make Christians only! We can be in the 21st Century what Christians were in the 1st Century, if we are willing to believe what they believed: obey what they obeyed and practice what they practiced!

Why NOT be just Christians????? ~~ Bobby Dockery, Fayetteville, Arkansas

Painting of the Building Exterior

This is to advise that painting of the exterior of our building is now complete. Per my observation, Mr. Perez and his crew did an excellent job. The congregation is to be commended for adjusting schedules and parking routines to meet the needs of the painting contractor. I think the building looks great, and it was a good decision to preserve and protect what we have for the worship of the Lord and for serving the community. ~~ Cary

footprints-hiBeautiful Footnotes . . .

Our congregation has been blessed to support Richard and Becky Emperado and their efforts to bring the gospel to the people of Philippines for many years. Those efforts became even more challenging this last week when Typhoon Koppu struck the Philippines. What follows is a current update:

“Army, police and civilian volunteers rushed Monday, October 19th to rescue hundreds of villagers trapped in their flooded homes and on rooftops in a northern Philippine province battered by slow-moving Typhoon Koppu.

The typhoon blew ashore into northeastern Aurora province early Sunday, leaving at least 11 dead, forcing more than 65,000 villagers from their homes, and leaving nine provinces without electricity. By Monday afternoon, Koppu had weakened into a tropical storm over Ilocos Norte province with winds of 65 mph and gusts of up to 84 mph.

Several of the affected provinces were inundated by floods that swelled rivers and cascaded down mountains, trapping villagers in their homes. There were people who got trapped by the flood on their roofs, some were rescued already.

When a flooded river swamped the villages, residents scrambled to safety but many failed to save their poultry and farm animals. Rice farms looked like it was ran over by a giant flat iron. All the rice stalks were flattened in one direction.”

The typhoon’s unusually slow speed allowed it to batter the north for about three days instead of just a few hours. Rain dumped by the typhoon in the north may rampage through rivers late Monday to Tuesday and put at risk about 800 downstream villages, where residents have been urged not to return home.

Brethren, let us keep in our thoughts and prayers the people of the Philippines as they struggle after the events of this weekend and also remember our brothers and sisters in Christ who are seeking to share God with those people. For the elders, Ken D
