HONOR AND SHAME

Honor and Shame for Christians by Wes McAdams

This is from a post by Wes McAdams, the first one on the topic of honor and shame. This subject is so important right now because many Christians are feeling attacked. Specifically, we feel attacked by secular progressives in academia, government, and entertainment. We are not being physically attacked, but our honor is definitely being attacked. We are even being shamed for our beliefs and ethical standards. Thankfully, Scripture has so much to say on this subject of honor and shame.

What is Honor?

Honor is what society gives to those who exemplify and embody cultural values. Pay attention to why certain people become celebrities. Why do people love, appreciate, or admire them? When people receive recognition, a standing ovation, an award, or have a monument built in their memory, ask yourself, “What cultural values do/did these people exemplify or embody?”

The ancient Spartans honored their greatest warriors. Athens honored their philosophers. In Rome, perhaps politicians and the aristocracy received the highest honors. In Jerusalem, priests, scribes, and rabbis were honored. Identifying honored people will tell you a lot about a culture’s values. Whether it is the beautiful, wealthy, courageous, strong, intelligent, or pious, every culture honors those who exemplify and embody their values.

Unfortunately, honor can be intoxicating and addicting. Consider the Pharisees. Jesus said about them, “They love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others” (Matthew 23:6-7). In modern terms, we might measure honor in retweets, likes, shares, compliments, promotions, awards, and recognition. This honor can be intoxicating and addicting.

In the first century, following Jesus almost always meant, to some degree, choosing to relinquish your honor. It meant you would no longer be seen as someone who exemplified and embodied cultural values. Today, many Christians must decide which they love more, obedience to Jesus or the place of honor.

What is Shame?

Shame is the flip side of the honor coin. And it is another way to understand a culture’s values. When someone does not conform to cultural expectations, the community explicitly or implicitly shames them. In other words, shame makes people feel that unless they change, they won’t really belong.

Since we are social creatures, we are often willing to make dramatic changes to our apparel, appearance, speech, behavior, and beliefs in an effort to find acceptance and avoid shame. Most of the time, we do this subconsciously. We don’t even realize we are making decisions about clothes, hairstyles, cars, houses, politics, etc. in order to avoid someone thinking or speaking negatively about us.

The Pharisees knew how to use shame as a tool to try to pressure others to conform. When they referred to, “tax collectors and sinners” (Matthew 9:11), they were referring to people who had engaged in shameful behavior.

The Pharisees wanted “tax collectors and sinners” to feel shame. They also wanted others to see the shame of “tax collectors and sinners,” so no one would follow in their shameful footsteps. Jesus surprised the Pharisees when he ate with such people. He was undermining the Pharisee’s use of shame.

If you want to see modern shame in action, look no further than social media. Harsh and cruel comments can be a form of public shaming. This applies to everything from online bullying to partisan political rancor. When you see someone get bombarded with abusive comments or get “canceled,” you are seeing what communities do to those who don’t meet their expectations or conform to their values.

The Message Shame Sends

Shame sends a message to:

1. the person being shamed, “People who act/think/ speak/look like you don’t belong.”

2. like-minded community members, “I’m on your side and I’m protecting the community from those people.”

3. anyone on the cultural fence, “If you follow in those footsteps, you’ll be treated this way as well.”

Jesus and his early followers experienced shame. Jesus was crucified and his call to discipleship was, “Take up your cross and follow me.” The cross was Rome’s way of not only executing someone but humiliating and shaming them in the process. As the cultural values of our society shift, Christians are going to have to ask if they are still willing to take up their cross and follow Jesus.

Changing Cultural Values

Honor and shame are not inherently wrong. But they are wrong when aligned with a sinful value system. Cultural values determine what is shameful and what is honorable in a particular society. Behavior that is shamed in one place, may be honored in another. In fact, a nation can experience such major shifts in values that what was deemed honorable in one generation is shameful in the next.

From a Christian perspective, this can sometimes be a positive change. It can be a form of repentance. When a generation realizes the previous generation(s) acted in ungodly ways, there should be an appropriate amount of shame attached to historical discussions (racism, slavery, segregation, etc.). We do not have to completely condemn our forefathers, but we should be appropriately ashamed of their sins, just as we are of our own (see Psalm 106:6; Jeremiah 3:25; Jeremiah 14:20).

That said, we should also be able to discern when values shift in sinful ways. For instance, our modern culture’s values have particularly shifted in the area of gender and sexuality. Now, the historic Christian perspective on sexuality is often seen as shameful, harmful, archaic, misogynistic, homophobic, and oppressive. How we respond to this moment will say a lot about whether or not we have really been listening to Jesus.

How to Respond to Shame

You have several choices when you experience dishonor or shame:

1. Fight to demonstrate your strength and preserve your honor.

2. Change your values.

3. Be content with the shame.

Preserving your honor can feel necessary. It can feel like preserving your life. Since the beginning of human history, people have fought, killed, and died to preserve their own honor and the honor of their people. In this cultural moment, there are plenty of people encouraging Christians to pound their chests, show their strength, fight fire with fire, and defend their honor. Brothers and sisters, this is not the way of Jesus.

Nor is it the way of Jesus to let the world shame you into conformity (Romans 12:1-2). Of course, there are times when society’s values actually align with God’s and we need to change our values as an act of repentance. However, many Christians are being shamed into adopting a sinful value system. Some are even joining the unbelieving world in heaping shame on those of us who hold to “traditional views” on marriage, sexuality, and gender.

The way of Jesus is typically the hardest of the three options. Those who choose the way of Jesus will be despised by those on both sides of the culture war. Following Jesus means being “content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities” (2 Corinthians 12:10). After all, when we follow a crucified King, we must be content with the perceived weakness and foolishness of the cross (1 Corinthians 1:18-31).

The Way of Jesus

Jesus calls his followers to be meek. Meekness is related to how we handle shame. You are meek when you are dishonored, disrespected, and humiliated, but persevere in faithfulness. Remember: “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:11-12)

Look at the great things the Lord has done through Gospel Chariot Missions during the pandemic. When George Funk was stuck living in one of the most tightly controlled countries in the world (Australia), he used that time of isolation to develop and promote Gospel Share Missions. “God was not in lock-down during the pandemic.” Gospel Share teaches members how to spread the Good News by telling their stories and God’s story to others in a simple, biblical and reproducible way. Below is a little of how God helped them accomplish all this during a couple of years in lockdown. Pray for this effort. For the elders, Ken D

HOW IT ALL STARTED

IT ALL STARTED SOME 10 YEARS BACK DUE TO US BAPTIZING TOO MANY SOULS EVERY YEAR ON THE GOSPEL CHARIOTS AND NOT EQUIPPING THE NEW CONVERTS AND THE LEADERS OF THE CHURCHES, AND IT BOTHERED ME. WHEN LOCKDOWN ARRIVED I WAS READY TO WRITE A DISCIPLESHIP MANUAL WITH 12 DISCIPLESHIP TOOLS ON HOW TO ENTER AN EMPTY FIELD, HOW TO SOW THE SEED, HOW TO GROW THE SEED AND HOW TO GATHER THE HARVEST WITH 3 LEADERSHIP TOOLS ALL FROM THE WORD OF GOD AS WE FOLLOW JESUS AND THE APOSTLE PAUL.

I THEN STARTED TRAINING ONLINE THROUGH ZOOM DURING THE LOCKDOWN AND FAST BECAME A NETWORKER OF NOTE, MAJORING IN NETWORKING AND TRYING TO EQUIP OTHERS WHO ARE CONNECTED AND RESPECTED IN THE LORD’S CHURCH. TODAY WE HAVE SOME MULTIPLICATION TRAINERS THAT ARE WAY BETTER TRAINERS THAN MYSELF AND THAT IS OUR GOAL. HOW CAN WE HELP OTHERS BE BETTER DISCIPLES THAN OURSELVES.

AT THE WRITING OF THIS REPORT, WE ARE NOW WORKING IN MOST COUNTRIES IN AFRICA, IN MULTIPLE ASIAN COUNTRIES, NORTH, SOUTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA ,WHERE NOW WE ARE ALSO BUILDING A NEW BIG GOSPEL CHARIOT FOR LATIN AMERICA AND NOT FORGETTING AUSTRALIA. SEE THE REGIONS WE ARE NOW WORKING IN AND WE NEED TO THANK YOU.

WE HAVE RECENTLY STARTED AN ONLINE COLLECTIVE 3/3s CHURCH OF CHRIST WHERE WE GATHER, GROW AND GO AS WE WORSHIP GOD. IT IS MORE LIKE YOUR BIBLE STUDY TIME WHERE THE FLOOR IS OPEN FOR COMMENT WHEN DISCOVERING SCRIPTURE AND ALSO DESIGNED FOR KEEPING GOD’S BIG VISION IN FRONT OF THE GROUP. AND BEFORE HEADING HOME, SETTING SOME GOALS. IT IS VERY GOOD FOR CHURCH PLANTS AND FOR MISSIONARY PREACHERS AND ELDERS TO WORK WITH MANY GROUPS AT ONE TIME THAT WILL MULTIPLY.

BELOW IS THE FORMATE THAT WE USE. ALL CHURCHES GATHER, ALL CHURCHES GROW, NOT MANY CHURCHES GO AND THAT IS WHERE WE EQUIP OUR MEMBERS TO HAVE TOOLS IN THEIR TOOLBOX SO THEY CAN ENTER NEW FIELDS AND SHARE THE GOSPEL IN THEIR SPACE AND PLACE OF ACCESS AND IN THE PROCESS HELPING BRING NEW SOULS TO CHURCH WHERE FUTHER TEACHING CAN TAKE PLACE.

WE ARE CONNECTING EVERY SUNDAY EVENING ONLINE WITH MORE THAN 250 CHRISTIANS AROUND THE WORLD HELPING THEM GATHER, GROW AND GO. SO ANYONE WANTING TO START A NEW GROUP OR CHURCH OR UNDERGROUND CHURCH , CAN JOIN WITH US AND LEARN AND EVENTUALLY LEAVE US, BUT KNOW THEY HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO RETURN TO OR INVITE ONE OF THEIR DISCIPLES TO JOIN AND LEARN ON HOW TO START SMALL GROUPS. WE ARE A HUB HELPING CHURCHES START BABY CHUCHES THAT START BABY CHURCHES. THEN WE HAVE OUR OWN SMALL GROUP AND PLACE WHERE WE CONDUCT TRAINING AND CONNECT AND INVITE PEOPLE WHO ARE FAR FROM GOD BUT CLOSE TO US.

COURAGEOUS WOMEN

Photo by Lukas Hartmann on Pexels.com

Dennis Prager, in his commentary on Exodus, wrote about the few in this world’s history that can be truly called evil. In writing this, he wrote from the perspective of a moral society. But he made an interesting point that, I think, needs some additional attention. He said for evil to take root, you need three things to occur:

1) Ordinary people allow themselves to be taught, indoctrinated;

2) Those same ordinary people to benefit from the evil work promoted on the people (what he had in mind here was the central government legalizing stealing, for instance, and the recipients of those stolen goods going to others of the state), and,

3) A lack of courage existing within. These are some powerful thoughts and, perhaps, some additional points can be added to it. I want to give attention to the word courage. Courage defined means the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous (Merriam Webster online).

I suggest there is something else that needs to be added to this definition, that is, one must have a moral compass that is firmly anchored. Two women in Exodus 1 have their names written down for all to see their courage. Their names are Shiphrah and Puah. They resisted the king of Egypt’s decree to kill the male children that came from the womb. They did this because “the midwives feared God” (1:17). Without God as the moral foundation, a courageous stand is not as firm. People can have moral courage without the Lord, but the moral courage they have anchored in something other than the Lord is a false hope, and a false hope that ends in personal disaster.

The Holy Spirit, in 2 Corinthians 13:5, said regarding each Christian, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (ESV) Take inventory; what is the moral force within you that generates your thinking, speaking, and taking a stand. Is it of God? How do you know, and can you defend it when another asks you about it (cf. 1 Pet. 3:15)? It’s easy to say, “I will not deny you, even if I have to die with you!” (remember Peter?), but it’s another thing when you are put to the test and your knees wobble. Wobbly knees are not an indication of a lack of courage, but an illustration of the difficulty of taking a stand when you must stand firm against the “god of this world” and the influences wielded. Courage is not, simply, the ability to stand up to exterior forces of evil, it is also the strength to stand up to and against our own moral and spiritual failings. How courageous are you? THINKING ABOUT ANGELS

Photo by Vin Aug on Pexels.com

I confess! I don’t know the first thing about angels, but I am persuaded that many of our cherished pictures are wrong. Are you really sure that you can tell me what an angel looks like? Are you absolutely positive that they always wear white? Do they play harps? Do they have halos? Are they the embodiment of feminine loveliness?

There is little doubt in my mind that art has weakened the Biblical conception of angels. As you stand looking at those stained-glass figures, try to remember that you are gazing at a purely imaginative human conception, and a tradition which seems to have begun after the sixth century. Putting wings and feathers on God’s messengers appears to be more our doing than God’s. (As Charles Hodge observes, “It is true that the Cherubim symbols have wings but otherwise there is nothing to indicate that angels have wings.) And have not there been times when these messengers have simply appeared as men? And where in the Bible do we read about them having harps or halos? The concept of feminine loveliness seems to have been borrowed from Buddhism.

God’s Word pictures angels as excelling in strength and power. Think of a flaming sword wielded by strong arms. Or consider the destruction of Sodom and remember that two angels were commissioned for this task. Or think of the mighty army of Assyria and recall that it was by an angel that it was destroyed. And who rolled away the stone from the tomb of Jesus? An angel!

Perhaps we need to alter some of our cherished views by letting the Bible speak for itself. The word “angel‟ is used therein to translate Hebrew and Greek words meaning “messenger‟. These messengers seem to embody the characteristics of discipline, strength, swiftness and obedience. And nothing that I am aware of in all the whole Bible lends countenance to the idea that anything short of the highest combination of courage and power is meant by an angel. ~~ John Gibson, Little Rock, AR.

A few more scriptures and insights:

¨ “In speaking of the angels He says, “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire” — Hebrews 1:7

¨ “Are not all angels ministering spirits to serve those who will inherit salvation?” — Hebrews 1:14

¨ “….Even angels long to look into these things” — 1 Peter 1:12b

¨ King Nebuchadnezzar had Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego put into the fiery furnace because they chose to obey God and not this heathen king. They were not harmed, an angel rescued them. The heathen king, at first said “he looks like a son of the gods” (Daniel 3:25), but in verse 28 he reverses his thought (we don’t know why?) and praises God, saying that this fourth personality in the fiery furnace is the Lord’s “angel‟.

¨ Sometimes it seems the “Lord’s angel‟ is Christ Himself! Quite mysterious!

BEAUTIIFUL FOOTNOTES

Like the Apostle Paul and his love for the Thessalonian Christians (1 Thessalonians 1:2) We give thanks to God always for all Christians, constantly mentioning them in our prayers. We are aware that many Christians in Nigeria need prayers and aid with their health. Our brother Sylvester shares how they are dealing with health concerns there. Pray for them and know we are helping them too. For the elders, Ken D

 Dear Brethren,

In the past few months I have been swallowed up in efforts to help with the management of the health of others around here. The season has really been bad for health with so many sick and dying. The inflation, economic hardships further made worse by insecurities all have combined to make matters worse for rural folks.

In Ugbogbo church, we have a First Aid Box we are now trying to stock up with basic medicaments and over the counter drugs for helping especially in emergencies with women and children. But in the bad weather we have seen recently, we have had so many who have been hospitalized. Two have had major surgeries. We are still praying fervently for John Dania till this day! I have been blessed with the trust and generosity of wonderful Christian Donors who have made funds available for me to use in these various forms of benevolence works. And that helps to lift up the name of Christ in the community.

A very distressing aspect of our society is the fact that we don’t have any form of insurance for health. That’s why if you are sick, you are on your own. If you don’t have the funds and the native herbs fail to provide relief, then you lose hope But the privilege I have to receive and use benevolence funds from Christians and congregations have been making a huge difference in this direction. In this quarter, I have used more than triple of the funds for benevolence. I have used my work funds and I have used my personal support for health cases because there have been so many.

I received an unexpected surprise of funds from the church in Kingsland, Texas, which they sent for my personal health reasons and for me to use some for my vacation if any is left over. I have used up all of that, plus some of my vacation funds.

In all, I am so thankful to see many get relief and glorify God for His grace and provisions through you all- using me as a channel

TO SHOW YOUR WORK OR NOT?

Photo by Katerina Holmes on Pexels.com

When you were a kid, were you told that you had to show your work on the math problems you were given to do in class? I will admit I always hated doing that. Showing others our work is one of the things I think Christians struggle with.

There are verses in the Bible that can confuse some because they seem to teach things that, on the surface, appear to be opposites. Should we hide the work we do for God from others, or do all our work out in the public eye so they can see it? “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven” (Mathew 6:1). This chapter goes on to warn us not to do our giving, praying, and fasting so that others can see us doing these things. Doesn’t this verse teach us that we should hide our work from others? If we receive praise from men, are we giving up our reward in heaven? On the other hand, we see other verses like 1 Peter 2:12, “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” Doesn’t this verse teach us that the work we do has a purpose? That our work is to be seen by those around us to point them toward God? I can see why some people struggle with knowing what to do.

The chapter in Matthew 6 warns us against doing things to be seen by others. Each of the activities that Jesus warns us about are ones that only involve God and us. These activities are not works that help others or shows God’s love to other members of the church and the community. They are acts of worship directed toward God, and do not need to be seen by the people around us. Jesus Himself taught that we have a responsibility to show the love of God to others through our works. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Mathew 5:14-16). Our works of love will gain attention from others. Our job is to make sure they know that God is the reason we work. – Brad Tolbert Monticello church of Christ Monticello, AR

WHY DOES THIS ARTICLE SEEM SO RIDICULOUS ?

Photo by Alex Andrews on Pexels.com

“Hello . . . Yes . . . Oh, you‘re Johnny‘s teacher. I‘ve been meaning to call you . . . No, he isn‘t planning to be in school this year. You see, he had so much work to do at the church – school lessons, church services, youth activities and such take up his time; then there are daily devotionals at home and other interests, so there isn‘t much time left for school . . .

―Well, yes, I know that school is important, and I know that you are doing a fine job with the kids in this community — and I‘ve been intending to write a letter of appreciation to the school, I surely would hate to live in a place where there were no schools . . .

―To tell the truth, Johnny didn‘t like school too well last year. Besides all those examinations, having to bring home a report card showing his progress was embarrassing to him. He suffered some psychological effects because so many girls are attending school, he thought he was a ‘sissy‘, so he decided he would not attend this year . . .

―Am I making him go? Of course, I‘m not! I knew a family once that made their child go, and he wound up hating school. I don‘t think his educational growth will be harmed. I will use my influence to get him to attend football games, plays etc. . . .When hunting season is over, his father will be able to take him. I really think the old methods of education are outdated anyway . .

―Yea, if he were to decide that he wanted to return to school, it would be alright with me, I just want this decision to be his.”

  1. OPM has been taking great strides of progress in the work of evangelism by the church in Nigeria. We are providing good gospel literature to thousands of native preachers in hundreds of local congregations throughout Nigeria.
  2. Many preachers, leaders and teachers in local congregations depend on our materials for their sermons, lessons and outlines for seminars and Bible lectures. In this way, we are making a huge impact [not only in the work of evangelism] but also in the edification of the body of Christ in Nigeria. In these ways, we are humbled to know that we are playing a vital role in the continuity of the work of the church in Nigeria.
  3. The collaboration or partnership with other methods of evangelism continues to expand the work of OPM in Nigeria. Such as with: The prisons, schools, The Vigilantes, WBS , etc.
  4. In this quarter, I have written and we produced a new title: ”Reasons to Believe In Water Baptism”. This is a part of the Foundation of Faith Series that are being funded by the Sun Valley Church of Christ in Gilbert, AZ.
  5.  In this quarter, we noticed that more and more pastors of denominations are requesting our materials. And we continue to oblige them the opportunity to learn the truth of the Gospel through the OPM materials.
