BE ALL YOU CAN BE

4cc3ddff4e0487dfd1727de1f9c93545“Be all that you can be!” “Aim high!” “You can be anything you set your mind to be!” These are but a few examples of nice-sounding slogans intended to build up our self-esteem, or self-concept. While it is true that we live in a nation of vast opportunities, it is not factual to say we can always be anything we want to be.

We all have limitations with which we must learn to deal. These limitations can be physical and/or mental. What each of us needs to do is come to grips with our own personal situation. This does not, in any way, mean that we cannot overcome obstacles by striving to improve our life, but in all our efforts we must remember Who is providing our abilities, and watching over our lives.

We do not have to ride the wave to the top in order to find happiness. Very often happiness is right under our noses, yet we fail to smell the roses. We may have the highest of ambitions, but if God has other plans (see Proverbs 16:9) we must find happiness where we are, and give it our all, and our all to the Lord.

If we place our trust in God, nothing else is of much consequence. We can make the most of what we have been given. In this way, we will learn many valuable lessons, including patience. So frequently, we look around and see what others have acquired or accomplished, and wonder why the same has not fallen into our lives. We must be willing to grow at our own pace, the pace God has set for us. At the same time, we must not fail to do our part. We are in this race together with God, and He will be there for us, if we are there for Him. Be all you can be for Him!

“For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:15 (ESV)

When Brother Doug Wheeler went to Nigeria in January, he took with him funds from our congregation to help the work there. Several preachers were given the money to buy a motorcycle that would aid their efforts to evangelize the people of their part of Nigeria. What follows is a thank-you letter to us from one of those preachers. Please keep God’s work in Nigeria in you r prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Dear Brethren, Greeting to you in the precious names of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. My name is Brother Simon C. Iwebo, the Minister at Church of Christ, Okpanam, Delta State, Nigeria. I am writing to appreciate and thank you for the gift of $750 you sent to me for the purchase of a motorbike in support of my preaching work at Okpan am.

I am overwhelmed by the support and I ask God to reward you all.

The Okpanam local Church came into being in 2012, after some preaching was done in that community lead by our dear brother, Elder Emeka Molokwu, of Church of Christ, Omomko, Asaba. We appreciate his efforts.

Today, the local Church is gradually growing steadily with some challenges here and there. One of the challenges is the fetish nature of the community, and with 70-80% of the inhabitants, idol worshippers. I do believe that with prayers and the help of God who converts souls, we will continue to preach the gospel that saves the soul without fear.

I must not fail to convey my sincere thanks and gratitude also to Brother Douglas, who stood for me before you, to justify the purchase of the bike. May God bless him. I purchased the bike on the 5th of January 2016. It has been numbered and necessary papers procured for it. My picture and that of the bike is herewith attached with this appreciation letter.

Please remember the Church in your prayers that God would help us to grow and bear fruits, and that members may have the desire and zeal in the things of Christ and the Church. John 15:15, 2 Tim 2:2.

Finally remember us in your prayers that the economic downturn in our country, Nigeria, will not hinder the members from being faithful.

Once again, on behalf of my family, I thank you, and may God remember the labor of your love.

In Christian Love, Brother Simon

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

mothers-day-2As we look at history, as far back as the 1600’s, there has been some organized attempt to show respect and honor to mothers on some particular day.  In the United States it was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 to have special Mother’s Day.

In 1907 Anna Jarvis organized a campaign to have Mother’s Day celebrated nationwide.  This idea became popular and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the second Sunday in May should be that day and declared it a national holiday.

The Bible tells us that being a mother is a position that is filled with responsibility, love and honor.

Mothers are responsible.  Solomon writes of mothers being industrious home managers, able to accomplish a wide array of tasks while causing the family to call her blessed (Proverbs 31:27-28).  As a parent she shares the responsibility to train her children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:7)  Timothy was blessed to have a mother and grandmother who taught him in the ways of God (2 Timothy 1:5).

Mothers are full of love.  In 1 Kings 3:16-28 we find the story of Solomon and the two mothers brought before him.  One mother had accidentally smothered her infant during the night, and then replaced him with the son of the other mother.  The next day each mother claimed the living baby.  With his great wisdom, Solomon found out who the real mother was.  Through her great love she was willing to give up the child, rather than see him die.

Mothers are honorable.  In the Old Testament, if a child showed disrespect to a parent by hitting or cursing the parent, that child was to be put to death (Exodus 21:15; 17).  Solomon wrote in several places how parents should be honored (Proverbs 1:8; 10:1; 15:20; 17:25; 19:26).  God intends for us to respect, love and honor our mothers.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (Ephesians 6:1-3)

A special day of honor for mothers is a worthy event.  Gifts, favors and hugs are certainly nice; but the best way to honor a Christian mother is to live righteously each and every day. – From an article by Mike Baker, west Erwin church of Christ, Tyler, TX

human-footprints_318-46627Beautiful Footnotes

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”  1 John 5:1-3 (ESV)

What a blessing to show love for others and to honor our God by doing what He has asked us to do.  Several years ago this congregation tried to help many of the children’s homes throughout the region, but eventually we focused on seeking ways to help those children closest to us, those at the Cherokee Home for Children. As we have been able to bless them over the years, we as a congregation have been blessed.

One of the goals of Cherokee has been to “provide children a safe and nurturing Christian home during times of family crisis.” Last year our congregation helped support them by contributing to a new boys’ cottage in Phase 1 of their Stability First campaign. That cottage was completed earlier this year. Recently the elders, on behalf of the congregation contributed to their Phase 2 which will build a new girls’ cottage.  The Home has informed us that they now have all the funds committed to begin construction.  Thanks be to God.

This weekend our congregation participated in the Cherokee Day Food Drive, that helps the Home offer healthy meals in a family setting every day to their growing children.  For many, it is the first time in their lives that they can expect to eat at a certain time and have as much as they need. Through contributions from individual members and an amount designated by the elders, our congregation contributed a helpful cash gift to the Home to help with their food expenses.  Several members attended their Open House and shared time with the staff and children as well as a delicious barbeque lunch. What a blessing to be able to bless this wonderful group of children and the Home that cares for them.

We thank God that this congregation has been so willing to bless others and show God’s love by keeping His commandments.  They are not burdensome, but bring joy and blessings to so many.  Keep this ministry in your prayers.  For the elders, Ken D

BLESSINGS WE ALWAYS HAVE

blessingsAs my youngest daughter (who is 4 years old) prays, she inevitably expresses thanks to God for the blessings that He provides. However, when she states it, there is a truth that she adds which many of us adults forget. She prays, “Thank you for the blessings that we always have.” It is true isn’t it? God “daily bears our burdens” (Psa. 68:19), and “A faithful man will be richly blessed” (Pro. 28:20).       Even the unrighteous are blessed through God’s faithfulness in creation (Mat. 5:45; Acts 14:17). The physical blessings that every man enjoys come from God: “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). God wants us to be happy and satisfied so that we can see and access the greater blessings (that have always been in His mind) in the spiritual realm. To “always have” those blessings we must choose to be in Christ’s church and keep ourselves in the love of God (Mat. 16:18; Jude 21). To be “in Christ” one must have the faith that leads them to repent and confess Christ and be baptized “into” Him (John 3:36; Luke 13:3; Acts 8:37; Gal. 3:27). God had a plan before the world began for mankind to receive the ultimate blessings of mercy, grace, redemption, and eternal life in His Kingdom through obedience to His only begotten Son (2 Tim. 1:9; Titus 1:2).       Think about it: Christ was “slain from the creation of the world” so we could always have blessings (Rev. 13:8). God chose that the faithful in Christ would always have blessings “before the creation of the world” (Eph. 1:4). At the end of time, the Lord and King will allow the righteous to always have blessings in the “kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world” (Mat. 25:34).       Let us be thankful for the “blessings we always have!”  Derrick Coble, Nesbit church of Christ, Nesbit, MS

“So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement.” Acts 15:30-31 (ESV)      It always has been exciting and encouraging to receive a letter of good news.  This week as we hear from Comfort Mafunda, whom we as a congregation have the honor of supporting as a student at the Southern Africa Bible College, it is exciting too.  As Comfort studies and prepares himself in spreading God’s word, we can also be encouraged by this fine young man and keep him in our thoughts and prayers.  For the elders, Ken D

Here is Comfort’s latest report. Look forward to representatives from Highland Lakes getting to meet him in person!  Peace, Kirk Eason, Director of Development SIBI.

Dear Brethren   I greet you in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus Christ.   I thank God for this opportunity for being able to write to you again. This year I’m working with the congregation at the Spengane Nursing College. So far everything is under control. We have started Bible studies every Sunday morning because we realized that sermons are not enough to bring someone to Christ.        During the “Easter” holidays I went to Durban, my home town, and I was given an opportunity to preach at KwaMashu Church of Christ twice. Then I had to come back before the College opened again for classes because I had an appointment with the dentist. During that period I stayed with one of the married students who have individual housing and the dorms close during breaks.       So far I’m looking forward for this term although now it’s starting to be cold here since the winter is near and I don’t like it but then I don’t have a choice — God is in control.        Once I again really appreciate the good work you are doing for the College. May God continue showering you with more blessings.         Comfort Mafunda

THIS IS OUR CONFIDENCE

confidence-wordsHow do nations die and why? “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9; 3:15). Solomon’s wisdom from God, declares this truth: occurrences and actions repeat themselves, over years and centuries, albeit in a “new dress”.

About the Disintegration of Nations: God’s Chosen One of Old, and all the Others, too, All Belong to God. All belong to His history!

Proverbs 14:34 — “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”

Proverbs 11:11— “Through the blessings of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.”

Proverbs 11:14 — “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers [the good and righteous ones] make victory sure.”

Isaiah 10:1 — “Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees.”  V.2 — “To deprive the poor of their rights and rob my oppressed people of justice.”

Isaiah 59:14 — “So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter.” Micah 7:2 — “The godly have been swept from the land; not one upright man remains. All men lie in wait to shed blood, each hunts his brother with a net.” (Also: Ezekiel 22:27.28)

Isaiah 1:23 — “Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless, the widow’s case does not come before them.”

Isaiah 5:20 — “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”  In this chapter, starting with verse 8 on, [read it to the end!] God pronounces woes on the individual Israelite and the whole nation, because they have become, individually and collectively, unfaithful to God, they had become independent of Him, become self-sufficient because of their prosperity. They had no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of His hand (verse 12b). Therefore they were condemned to go into exile. So, this “woe” is not only pronounced on a person, a group of people, but also, and with it, on a whole nation. David said earlier in Psalm 11:2 — “For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.” So his lament is: “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (v.3). They, we, can do many godly things! Pray for strength and courage, so we can befriend and teach our neighbors; a possibility, or should this be our main goal? Yet in the end, all goes according to God’s will and plan:

Psalm 33:10 — “The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples.”

Psalm 33:11 — “But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.”

Psalm 145:13 — “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and Your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.”

Jeremiah 27:5 — “With My great power and outstretched arm I made the earth and its people and the animals that are on it, and I give it to anyone I please.”  [Context: God hands over several countries to His servant, Nebuchadnezzar, His tool for the punishment of wicked nations.] (God the Creator: Psalm 24:1,2; Haggai 2:8).

Psalm 115:2,3 — “Why do the nations say, ‘Where is their God?’ Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him.”

Psalm 75:6,7 — “No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt a man. But it is God Who judges; He brings one down, He exalts another.”

Daniel 2:21 — “He changes times and seasons; He sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”

And some day, there will be an end to the history of mankind:

2 Peter 3:10 — “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare”.

1 Timothy 1:17 — “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”  —  Ephesians 6:12

“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (ESV)

India is the second most populous country in the world, with over 1.2 billion people, more than a sixth of the world’s population. Already containing 17.5% of the world’s population, India is projected to be the world’s most populous country by 2022, surpassing China, its population reaching 1.6 billion by 2050.      “India Evangelism” is aimed at saving and strengthening souls in India by working with our Indian brethren as fellow servants, and by “equipping the saints for the work of ministry” through Bible teaching and various gifts.  Overseen by the elders of the West Freeway Church of Christ in Fort Worth, TX, our congregation has long supported this work by specifically helping one Indian brother, PJ Krupalini in preaching the gospel for the Palivela, India church of Christ. PJ and his wife Ruth have worked for many years bringing the good news to their part of India.  Most of our contact about this work comes from our brother Royce Fredrick of Fort Worth who makes trips to India much in same way as Doug Wheeler does in Nigeria. What follows is part of Royce’s winter 2016 India Trip report.  Keep this work and the Indian people in your thoughts and prayers.  For the elders, Ken D

“I left for India Jan 19 and returned home Feb 9.  This trip, the Lord added 36 precious souls to His family!  This included our dear friend R. Kumar, a Hindu man, who has been driving for me for many years.  Another highlight this time was the opening of the new facility for Grace Tailoring School!  The Lord is blessing many lives through this school.       It gives help and hope to widows with young children and to many others who are facing very difficult situations.      We provided 1,483 Bibles, many sent to graduates of Bible Correspondence courses in India.  We also provided for 8 new sewing machines for Grace Tailoring School.  These are given to graduates of the school to help them provide for the needs of their family.  Funds were also provided for food and other costs for 4 Bible schools for preachers.  Funds were given to help and encourage 97 preachers as they labor for the Lord.  Other funds went to 11 different benevolence efforts.   We started 6 “Buildings Without Walls” this time.  These provide a covered shelter for churches to meet out of the hot sun and monsoon rains.   Thanks again for helping us and Indian brethren share the gospel and many other blessings by God’s grace!   Your brother, Royce Frederick.

HE WILL LET YOU CHOSE

the-choice-is-yoursThere are times when God sends thunder to stir us.  There are times when God sends His blessings to lure us.  But then there are times when God sends nothing but silence as He honors us with the freedom to choose where we spend eternity. And what an honor it is!  In so many areas of life we have no choice.  Think about it.  You didn’t choose your gender. You didn’t choose your siblings.  You didn’t choose your race or the place of your birth. Sometimes our lack of choices angers us.  “It’s not fair,” we say.  It’s not fair that I was born in poverty or that I sing so poorly or that I run so slowly.  But the scales of life were forever tipped on the side of fairness when God planted a tree in the Garden of Eden.  All complaints were silenced when Adam and his decedents were given free will, the freedom to make whatever eternal choice we desire.  Any injustice in this life is offset by the honor of choosing our destiny in the next. Wouldn’t you agree?  Would you have it otherwise?  Would you have preferred the opposite?  You chose everything in this life, and He chooses where you spend the next?  You choose the size of your nose, the color of your hair, and your DNA structure, and He chooses where you spend eternity?  Is that what you would prefer? It would have been nice if God had let us order life like we order a meal: I’ll take good health and a high IQ.  I’ll pass on the music skills, but give me a fast metabolism …. Would’ve been nice.  But it didn’t happen.  When it came to your life on earth, you weren’t given a voice or a vote. But when it comes to life after death, you were.  In my book that seems like a good deal.  Wouldn’t you agree? Have we been given any greater privilege than that of choice? Not only does this privilege offset any injustice, the gift of free will can offset any mistakes. You’ve made some bad choices in life, haven’t you?  You’ve chosen the wrong friends, maybe the wrong career, even the wrong actions and relationships.  You look back over your life and say, “If only …. if only I could make up those bad choices.”  You can.  One good choice for eternity offsets a thousand bad ones on earth. God allows you the choice. The choice is yours. He Will Let You Choose.  Thoughts from reading “I Will Let You Choose” by Max Lucado.

APRIL 17, 2016 WEEKLY NEWS

Adult Class to Hear Special Report

The Combined Adult Bible Classes are meeting this morning, April 17th in the auditorium to hear a report from Montie Tuttle about the work that is being done by the Eastern European Mission. We have supported that effort at various times and we are looking forward to what Montie Tuttle will tell us. This will be the first time that we will hear a “live report” about this good work of our brotherhood!

Thank You Note

Thank you for your prayers, support, and many words of encouragement while I have been recovering from breaking my leg. After an exam last week, the doctor said my bone is growing and should completely heal over time, so no additional surgery will be necessary. It is truly a blessing to be a member of Christ’s church in Kingsland which is filled with Christian love and compassion.        Sincerely, Bob Foster

Visiting For The Master

VISITATION PROGRAM Team #2 (leaders: Cary & Brenda Miller) will meet on Wednesday, April 20th, at 6:30 pm in the library for their assignments.

Our Fellowship Meal

Next Sunday, April 24th will be the time for our monthly Fellowship Meal. We are now getting into the good habit of having it at noon, with the afternoon off. Hosts and Hostess will be Bill & Mary K. Flanary, Cary & Brenda Miller and Don & Paula Welch

Upcoming Pounding

We have a new young couple who need a “pounding”.  In the old fashioned way of course!  For those of you who are not old enough to remember those old customs, the people living in the community would each give to a young couple who married an item of food usually weighing at least a pound.  During the frontier era, this was done to get them off to a good start and supply basic provisions for the new family until they could “get on their feet”.  Our newlyweds, Jonathan and Sharon Winnett, need a pounding; and, this event has been scheduled to be held during our next fellowship gathering, Sunday, April 24th.  For those of you who do not wish to contribute an item, a money tree will be available.  A table will be set up to receive your gift.

Ladies Bible Class

Ladies, our Wednesday morning Bible class will be dismissed on April 27th for the summer. We will meet for a luncheon on that day at Mr. Gattis. All ladies are invited.

Upcoming Bug Spraying

ACI Pest Control will be at the building at 11 am on Friday, April 29th. It is best to not come to the building on that day.

Cherokee Day

Cherokee Day has been scheduled for May 7th. As usual, there will be an Open House that day at the Home with the always delicious Bar-b-que at lunch time. We will be collecting money to help with their Food Drive, so if you would like to participate, please put a check in the contribution plate, earmarked: “Cherokee Home for Children”. If you wish to give cash, please hand it to one of the elders.  A “Thank you” to all in advance!

“and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for Christ’s service.” Philemon 6 (ESV)

Helping others grown up in the faith is something that helps us as Christians to grow to be more like our Lord ourselves. We are blessed to be able to help others in different ways. This week the elders want to share some ways that we feel the congregation will and can help support God’s kingdom.  For the elders, Ken D

The annual Cherokee Home for Children Food Drive strives to raise donations to help nourish and nurture the children that they and we serve. The congregation is invited to donate funds between April 17th – May 1st by earmarked check or designated cash in the weekly contribution or given to an elder.

The Cherokee Home for Children Stability First girl’s cottage will give the young ladies at the home a new stable environment to live in like the recently built boy’s cottage. The elders are contributing on behalf of the congregation a donation to this effort.

Benjamin Crommedy is an upbeat young man from the Metroplex who will begin attending Sunset International Bible Institute in Lubbock starting in August. As partial financial supporters of Ben, we are arranging a visit with him so we as a congregation can get to know him better.

Sylvester Imogoh in Nigeria is a fine fellow soldier for the Lord whom we have supported in many ways over the years. We have heard of a problem with the well which Sylvester and his family depend on for fresh water. Once we know more, we will seek ways to help our dear brother.

We are blessed this week to have Monte Tuttle from Eastern European Missions to report to us on the work of EEM in spreading God’s word. We will pray God can present us with a way we can be supportive of these efforts.

Many of us know and love Jordan Fontenot, grandson of our departed brother Claude Fletcher.
