DURING THE VALLEYS OF OUR FAITH

dark-valleyThe Christian life is all about peaks and valleys. When we are feeling good about our relationship with God and Jesus and something happens to re-enforce those spiritual feelings, we call that time “peak times” or “mountain top experiences.” When things don’t go right and we wonder if God is really listening to us (or if He really cares), those are the “valley experiences.”

The prophet Jeremiah gave the Hebrew people a “Peaks and Valleys” lecture. Jeremiah witnessed the brutal takeover of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. by the Babylonians. The Hebrew people who survived the ransacking of their homes and property were taken into captivity and marched hundreds of miles from Jerusalem to Babylon. This was a real down time — a real valley time in their faith.

And that’s where Jeremiah comes in with words of hope. He tells them (and us) God’s promise: “For surely I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future with hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). In those words, Jeremiah delivers God’s answer to His people’s questions: “The valley you are in right now won’t last forever. God is with you and will see you through.”

Jeremiah’s words still ring true for us today. God has plans for us—as individuals, and as a community of faith. God offers us – each and all – a future with hope. Isn’t that good news? Especially on those days when the terrain feels more like a valley than a peak! God offers us a future where pain can be transformed into joy. God offers us a future where relationships can be restored. God offers us a future where brokenness can be made whole. — BULLETIN DIGEST

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”. Matthew 5:16 (ESV)

Our brother Sylvester Imogoh in Nigeria recently was able to remind us the power of being involved in how “good works” can bring glory to God. This article was in The Christian Chronicle. Please be thoughtful of our need to be involved in doing good and to pray for those good works to bring glory to our Lord. For the elders, Ken D

‘Church of Christ goats’ for Africa

By Staff Reports (The Christian Chronicle – March 1, 2018)

Igarra, Nigeria —“I am a rural-born Nigerian and have lived most of my life in the villages, struggling to survive,” said minister Sylvester Imogoh. “I am always looking out for any means to affect the lives of our rural brethren — in very small, local ways.”

But when Imogoh suggested a “goats for widows” program to his U.S. supporters, he was amazed at the response. He hoped for a few hundred dollars to purchase goats, which produce milk, manure and more goats — all of which can bring much-needed profit for rural widows who have no other sources of income. Imogoh received more than $3,400 for the project.

The funds, provided by churches including the 41st Street Church of Christ in Sioux Falls, S.D., were enough to buy 160 goats (and a few sheep) for 80 widows in the north of Nigeria’s Edo state. There was enough money left over, Imogoh added, to establish a fund for the animals’ medical care. As the goats produce offspring, Imogoh hopes to expand the project to other villages.

“More and more people are talking about the church, in good ways, relating the care for the needy among us,” Imogoh said. “So many homes now have ‘Church of Christ goats’ in our rural areas. That alone is evangelism!”

A STEP FORWARD

ELDER

Last Sunday, the Highland Lakes congregation completed its search for additional leaders with the appointment of two new elders. This event needs to be seen as a step forward for our spiritual family — an enhancement of the good leadership we already had! Our new eldership is ready to lead, and the members need to be committed to following their spiritual example.

On behalf of Ken, Troy, Cary and myself — let me urge you to pray for us as we try to be the shepherds the Holy Spirit has called us to be. Please remember that the elders function as servants to the body of Christ . . . we want to hear your thoughts, ideas and concerns! By the grace of God, in the love of Christ, I am confident we are headed toward many more victories to the glory of our heavenly Father!

“But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57), — Joe

DIRECTORY CHANGE

Please change in your directory our newest member’s name from Lawrence Stevens to Lawrence Stevenson. All other information is correct. Sorry for this mistake!

PLEASE CHECK . . .

. . . the “Continue to Remember” list and the “In The Military” list periodically, updates are very important! If you think that your name or the name of a loved one needs to be removed (or added), please let the secretary (Helga) know! And as always, a written note or an e-mail is best.

This is very important! Please cut out the “Continue to Remember…” list for your own prayer sessions. We need to reduce this list; of course, continued prayers are very important.

but the word of the Lord remains forever. And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” 1 Peter 1:25 (ESV)

An exciting event is taking place in Africa this week that we are blessed to be part of. A group of Nigerian preachers, with part of their support from us, have gone to the nation of Swaziland to share the gospel and encourage the church there. Please pray that this mission team will be successful in their efforts. For the elders, Ken D

UPDATE ON MISSION TRIP TO MATSAPHA, SWAZILAND from Mike Udam, whom we help support.

Dearly beloved supporters, we greet you in Jesus precious name. Our evangelism team comprising the four of us, Osita Onuora, Bassey Esang, Mike Udam and Abiodun Adegoroye to Matsapha, Swaziland is scheduled to take place next week from Thursday, 1st March through Tuesday, 13th March 2018.

We wish to recall that we raise a total of one million, three hundred sixty thousand Naira only (N1,360,000.00) from the generosity of eight of you our benefactors, and we are now able to actualize the vision of strengthening the church in that area of Africa, and adding value to their functioning.

We, once again, wish to use this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to you for making possible our taking the life-saving gospel to other parts of Africa in a very proficient manner and to hopefully, by the grace of our God, significantly impact the lives of our brethren in Swaziland. We appreciate you, your love for Christ and His work, and pray that God increase you and your commitment to Him by abundantly replenishing your means and give us all an abundant increase in souls to the glory of His name.

red-arrow-pointing-swaziland-on-the-map-of-africa-continent-HEDM9AWe have booked our flights, and planned our trip to Swaziland in March. We hope to leave our various stations next week Wednesday and gather at Lagos for take-off on Thursday 1st March 2018. We hope to continue to update you as event unfolds by the grace of our Lord.

The Elders of the Matsapha church have approved our program as sent to them and we shall extend our activities to the physically sick in Mathangeni Church of Christ Clinic. The total package as we gave in our last report include interactive sessions teaching evangelistic strategies, internet evangelism, understanding computer systems, setting up business (computer etc.), leadership training – principles, strategies for development of leaders in the church, mission in Africa etc.

We continue to appreciate your prayerful support as we travel and covet your prayers during the trip and campaign. Once again, we thank you very much and may our Father who blesses those who invest in His work abundantly bless you even to your tenth generation. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV)

We Remain Excited to Serve Him, and are Happy to be Found Useful.

FAITH CHECK

check-up

It is always good for a person to do regular checkups on themselves and their lives. We know the importance of this physically, mentally, and even financially. But too often we neglect to do this spiritually – and this is the most important area of all.

In Micah’s day, there were questions of how best to demonstrate one’s faith in God. Was it simply just going through the motions of required sacrifices and offerings? No. Their faith was to be more than an outward ritual – it was to be proper outward actions based upon the proper inward attitude. The prophet summed it up with these words: “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). In this verse are three areas that each of us must check up on regularly in regard to our faith.

Christian, Check Your Righteousness. The first check point was “to do justly.” Being just is being right with God and His will. It is living right, living morally, and living properly in our daily walk. It is always conducting oneself in an upright and upstanding manner. The internal attitude that creates this is a passion to please God. So, Christian, check your life – is it one that is admirable according to God’s standard?

Christian, Check Your Respect for Others. The second bit of advice from Micah 6:8 was “to love mercy.” Properly respecting others is treating them as God treats us – with kindness, love, and forgiveness. It is selflessly giving to others what is needed in their lives. The internal attitude that brings this forth is a joy of the mercy and salvation that God has given us. So, Christian, check your life – is it one filled with eagerly helping others?

Christian, Check Your Relationship With God. The final part of our faith checkup is mentioned as “to walk humbly with your God.” Walking with God implies harmony and fellowship. This is attained through reading and studying the Scriptures, regular and fervent prayer, and heartfelt, proper worship. The internal attitude that strengthens this is a desire to grow closer to God.

So, Christian, check your life. Is it one that honors and involves God in every way?

For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.”  2 Corinthians 9:12 (ESV)

We have, as a congregation, been blessed to be able to support the gospel in so many ways and places. In the following, Brother Doug Wheeler, who assists our efforts from Norman, OK, shares the effect of a recent contribution we made to the Lord’s work in Nigeria. Please keep this all in your heart and prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Dear Brethren,

Oh, thank you so much – ONCE AGAIN – for the financial support you have sent to me for Nigerian evangelism! Even though I do not go to Nigeria any more, you have decided to help me one last time to fund projects that I think are worth supporting. In the latter part of 2018, this ministry will be turned over to another preacher and congregation, and it will be left up to him/them to decide what projects they might like to help in Nigeria! I will be turning over my mailing list to them, so you my get a letter from them at some point next year.

Brethren, I can never thank you all enough for the great support you have been to me in this ministry for Christ to Nigeria that I have been involved in for several years! Your friendship over the years has been so valued! I think the world of you all! I pray that you, Brethren, keep pressing ahead in life – and I will do the same! – So that one fine day, we will all find ourselves in the presence of our God in heaven!!

With your $2,000 contribution, I have decided to allocate your contribution as follows:

$500 for Project #1 – These funds will be divided evenly with each of the two preacher-training schools as student scholarships.

$500 for Project #2 – Support for the Great Workshop 2018 (Feb 7-11) expenses of four day workshop for 500+ Nigerian preachers.

$500 for Project #3 – Will be used in the printing of Sylvester Imogho’s tracts. We can never have enough money to help Sylvester print his tracts, for they are used throughout the Nigerian Brotherhood.

$500 for Project #4 –This will be used for World Bible School Administration expenses to run this program. Most of these funds are always spent on POSTAGE!

I sure do hope you all are doing FINE! God bless you for your love of mission work in Nigeria, especially through the WBS work you are involved with … for decades!!

I KNOW WHAT LOVE IS……

rel-11-anybody-know-whatYou may have seen the recent commercial by the Ad Council that tells us love has no limits. It shows people behind an x-ray screen embracing only showing their skeletal outlines. The people emerge from the behind to reveal they are a same sex couple, to a cheering crowd. The scene is redone with people of different races, religions and ages. Each one is accompanied by the text; love has no gender, love has no race, love has no disability, love has no religion, love has no labels. The ad campaign claims to combat what is seen as bias in our world today.

It got me to thinking about how the world is trying to redefine love. We hear the argument in our world to today, “How a person can be against two people who love one another? To try to put limits on love is wrong.”

But how does the Bible label love?

“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

Some things stick out to me in this passage, they are in conflict with the world’s definition of love. The world says you should cheer when someone is in sin, but Biblical love does not rejoice in unrighteousness. The world says love can act anyway it wants, but Biblical love never acts unbecomingly. The world says we should be proud of your lifestyle, but Biblical love does not brag (esp. about unrighteousness and sin). The world says you are offensive and should be shunned if you don’t accept what it accepts, but Biblical love does not take into account a wrong suffered. The world says you should accept any belief no matter if it is valid or not, but Biblical love rejoices with truth.

There is a saying, “He who controls the language, controls the masses.” When it comes to love, who makes the definition, God, Who is love, or the world who does not know Him? – Barry Haynes Hope AR

human-footprints_318-46627Christ-Defined” or “Situation-Defined”

Those of us who have raised children know very well the up and down emotions of a child. Crying one moment and laughing the next. Hungry, or dissatisfied with something, they may “throw a fit”. The emotions of a child run the whole gamut of emotions readily, in a very short time.

Only children? Do we not, as adults, do that, too? Don’t we often allow the situations we find ourselves in to take control of our emotions? Don’t we, at times, allow external situations to overwhelm us, so that we feel and act in a “fitful” way?

Sometimes what upsets us is a very real and present stress. The loss of a job. The loss of a loved one. An uncontrollable plummet of emotions. But at other times (and more often than not), it is something minor that sends us into orbit. Traffic lights when we are running behind. Trying to navigate through traffic, when the GPS is telling us to go down, a road that is blocked off by construction. Some unexpected computer glitch, people, and other common frustrations of life.

Currant situations will continue to define our happiness or way of thinking, until we are Christ-defined rather than situation-defined. There are Christians, who right in the very middle of a crisis in their lives reveal such a trusting faith in Jesus. Maybe you have experienced this yourself. They display the peace that transcends all understanding, as the Father brings comfort amidst turmoil; tranquility in the middle of anxiety and uncertainty.

Also, beyond that, there is the everyday. The many things we struggle with as men or women is the ability to calmly, rationally, objectively engage life and deal with the various situations. And as believers, we ought to do better and better at this.

Paul writes in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, ‘Rejoice’”. Where is the apostle when he writes the letter? Prison! Rejoice? Have joy? You better believe it. But only in Christ. Circumstance Christ-defined rather than situation-defined

May God help us to mature.
