UPCOMING EVENTS
The time for our holiday projects is quickly approaching!
As is our custom, we collect cookies to be sent to Cherokee Home for Children for their holiday party. The Ladies Class members plan on packing up the cookies on Wednesday, November 28th, which is the last class of 2018. The cookie contribution from our members needs to be in the Fellowship Room by Sunday, November 25th. They can either be home-made cookies or store-bought ones.
Another project is our collection of stuffed animals for the Care Van. We need to have those before our Holiday Party, on Sunday, December 2nd. Remember, those stuffed dolls and/or animals should not have loose parts that can easily come off!
HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE
All are invited to come to Cary and Brenda Miller’s home, 1922 Bluebonnet Lane, for an Open House. This will be on Monday, December 10th, from 5-8 pm. Thanks to the Millers’ for opening their home and to all the “helping elves” that make this yearly event a great success.

It is a real blessing to hear examples of the Gospel at work. It’s also exciting when we can see it at work in a place that we have had a long association with, Nigeria. It’s such a great thing when we know some of the people involved in it, like Monday John Akpakpan. Continue to keep this great work in your prayers. For the elders, Ken D
Monday John Akpakpan Reports 345 Baptisms in Nigeria
In his report for the months of July, August, and September, Monday John Akpakpan from the Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, reported that 345 baptisms have taken place in his area during those three months. He lists twenty different locations in which these baptisms have taken place. Akpakpan is a follow-up coordinator for World Bible School in that area.
4-zGN11-18-4BThe largest number was reported from the Nigerian Christian Bible College Lectureship where 122 men and women were baptized. At the Annual Lectureship at the C. A. O. Essien Memorial Bible School a total of sixty-five men and women were baptized. The World Bible School Seminar at Odukpani Township Church of Christ saw twenty-one baptisms on the day of the seminar but additional baptisms just before and just after the seminar brought the total to sixty-five. At three prisons, a total of forty souls were added to the church during the three month period.
The other baptisms on the list were generally four or five at a particular church or through a particular minister working in the area.
Monday John

Akpakpan also mentioned that there were youth seminars on different Sundays of the month at various locations and a women’s lectureship is held on the third Saturday of the month at different places.

Certainly good news that Monday John Akpakpan and others in the area are having such good success in bringing people to Christ.

THE CHRISTIAN (As Seen in Philemon)

The letter to Philemon is much more than a personal letter from Paul to his friend about the runaway named Onesimus. It is a message from God to each one of us. It is a message about what God expects to see in the lives of those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ.

maxresdefault

The Lord expects to see His children:

Refreshing Others (v.7, 20). We can be a refreshing joy or an exhausting drain on others. Being helpful and considerate of the needs and feelings of others will go a long way.
Embracing Divine Commands in the Spirit of Love (v.8-9, 14). Paul did not want Philemon to engage in the right action with the wrong heart.
Remaining Open to the Providence of God (v.15). Perhaps this was God’s plan all along!
Treating Others with Respect as Equals (v.12, 17). The disciple of Jesus will see all people as precious souls created in the image of God.
Willing to Forgive When They Have Been Wronged (v.18). To be willing to pay the debt that someone else owes requires a great deal of love and compassion.
Finding Joy in Reconciliation (v.20). Paul would find blessed peace upon hearing that Philemon and Onesimus had reconciled.
Going Above and Beyond What is Required or Expected (v.21). A disciple of Jesus does not ask about the minimum requirements.
Praying (v.22). Pray for a visit and keep the guest room prepared!

Paul expected to find these qualities in Philemon because he was a follower of Christ. God expects to find these characteristics in us. Will He find such faith in us?

THERE’S A FAMINE IN OUR LAND

“Behold days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “When I will send a famine on the land, not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the LORD.” — Amos 8:11

The-Prophet-Amos1The prophet Amos predicted a famine in the land of Israel. They had known famine before, but this would be a different kind of famine. They would have food and water, but the word of God would become very rare. The problem was that spokesmen for God were in short supply, and the few that remained were preaching error. God’s people were starving for a true message from God and had grown accustomed to hearing error. Israel would not wake up to their dire circumstances until it was too late. They were literally dying from a lack of preacher.

You may wonder what that Old Testament reference has to do with the church of Christ here in America. Maybe nothing, or perhaps it could serve as a wake up call before we reach a crisis point. After all, the famine in Israel didn’t happen instantly. The problem Amos announced had been developing for years. Alarms had been sounded in the past, but sadly, they had been ignored. I am announcing here that if we do not already have a crisis-level shortage of gospel preachers in our brotherhood, we may well be on the way to one.

We have said for years that 25 % of our congregations are without a trained gospel preacher. I suspect that percentage is much larger today, because for a number of years, our brotherhood preacher training schools and colleges have been enrolling smaller numbers of men who plan to preach.

preacherOur schools can train gospel preachers, and many of them are doing a commendable job of equipping those who enroll. The problem is that future preachers are produced, not in the schools, but rather in homes and churches. Not enough fathers and mothers are encouraging their sons to become preachers. Often they are discouraging it, knowing the sacrifices that might be involved. Churches have become consumers of preachers rather than producers of preachers. Where are the ministers who will shoulder-tap the best and brightest in their congregations and encourage them to seek training? Where are the elders who will monitor a young man, send him to a preaching school with their financial support, and then bring him back to be a minister or intern in their congregation? Are there still some godly sisters, who teach our children’s classes, who will whisper in the ear of promising young men, “You need to be a preacher?”

The future famine can be avoided, but it will require Kingdom-minded leaders working together to prevent a crisis and produce “whole preachers who will preach the whole Gospel to the whole world, wholly to please God.”

I would like to thank all for the prayers you have lifted up on behalf of my brother, Billy.
God planted me here for a reason and at the time I was not sure what He had in store. These past eight and a half years at Highland Lakes church of Christ, God has revealed to me part of His plan. To be a part of His family and have them rally around in times when I need strength. Each of you show me daily what a family in Christ should be and I thank God for all of you and allowing me to be part of this sincere loving and caring family. God bless each of you and I love you all. Sherry Wills

What follows is part one of a recent letter from our brother, Sylvester Imogoh in Nigeria. He will explain some of the difficult issues faced in Nigeria and the need for benevolent aid from the church. Part two next week will cover some ways the church can help. Please pray for our Nigerian brethren and those they come into contact with daily. For the elders, Ken D

RE: END-OF- YEAR 2018 APPEAL FOR WIDOWS, ORPHANS AND BENEVOLENCES
Dear Brethren, We have done it now for nearly ten years, and this ministry of benevolences to widows and orphans have been a huge source of campaign for Christ in the entire Northern part of Edo state with 6 counties.
In conjunction with our other Outreach Ministries- Tracts, Books and Rural campaigns, we have recorded progress in so many rural congregations. For example, here at Ugbogbo, we had a total of 4 widows in our congregation for very many years. But in the past year and half, we have converted so many women, and some of them are widows. Such that we now have 14 widows in our congregation alone! This and similar results have been reported in other churches that have benefited from our benevolence programs. Some prospects have come to church simply because they were so impressed with our care for the widows- in the light of the many other churches who extort and defraud widows in our society.
mnigeria

Some factors have contributed to the sufferings and hardship for brethren in our rural areas this year:
I. Climate Problems: In our area and several parts of Nigeria this year, there have been excess rains that have flooded homes and farmlands. This have caused untold loses resulting in hardships and food shortages for native folks. Rice farms, cassava plots and yams have been washed away in so many villages. Same as livestock and poultry farms.
II. The State Of insecurity: right at the beginning of this year- on January 2nd, when the activities of Boko Haram and later the notorious Fulani Herdsmen and now Kidnapping have continued to make lives unsafe in and around our county. Especially the fact that we are at the ‘gateway’ between the North and the South, we have felt the impact more in the past year. Years back, we heard of insecurity as ‘news’ from afar. Now it is in our doorstep. As even rural folks cannot go to their farms and gardens freely. The cumulative result is less food for people.
III. The civil war in Cameroon has led to the spread of refugees into Nigeria. So many Nigerians have been in Cameroon for ages [A part of Cameroon was part of Nigeria in the past] As a matter of fact, Nigerians have been the major missionaries working in the English part of that country. Nigerians are business men, farmers and tradesmen in Cameroon. Now war is ravaging the country- especially the English speaking part closer to Nigeria. So refugees have fled to live in many villages and towns. There is a Cameroon family in our congregation.

The Great I AM is the Answer!

Great-I-Am

The Great I AM Is the Answer!

Who is going to stand with me when my life falls apart? I AM.
Who is going to make sure that one day good will prevail over evil? I AM.
Who is going to help me when I need it? I AM.
Who is smart enough to figure everything out in my life? I AM.
Who is going to give me the assurance that everything always works out in the end? I AM.
Who is going to be with me now that I am all alone? I AM.
Who is going to help me out of my pits of despair? I AM.
Who is going to make sense of this world and give my life real meaning? I AM.
When no one is on my side. I AM.
When no one is listening. I AM.
This world is falling apart at the seams – what is going to last? I AM.
Who is able to get rid of all my past sin and give me a fresh start? I AM.
I AM. I always have been, I always will be, and this is My name forever.
“Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you,
before Abraham was, I AM’” (John 8:58).

FAREWELL FOR NOW

As many of you know, Larry and Evelyn Moore have officially moved to Lubbock to be a little closer to their children. Our congregation is so grateful to the Moores for the many years of faithful service they gave to us. Evelyn was a wonderful blessing to our children’s Bible class program and a helper we could count on in so many other areas. Larry faithfully served us as an elder for many years and his counsel was always a big help. We will miss this godly couple, but we know God has some exciting opportunities for them in their new home! God bless y’all!

EEM Offering

We thank the brethren at Highland Lakes for their generosity in the annual contribution for Eastern European Missions. The initial count from Sunday was $3,355, which will undoubtedly grow from additional gifts still coming in. When you consider that $5 can equip a student and $1,000 can equip an entire school with Bibles and related materials, this offering is sure to have an impact for Christ!

Well done, church!

LEARNING THE HARD WAY

What Arnold Palmer Learned the Hard Way
It was the final hole of the 1961 Masters Tournament, and golf legend Arnold Palmer had a one-stroke lead and had just hit a very satisfying tee shot. He felt he was in pretty good shape. As he approached his ball, he saw an old friend standing at the edge of the gallery. The friend motioned him over, stuck out his hand and said, “Congratulations.” Arnold later said, “I took his hand and shook it, but as soon as I did, I knew I had lost my focus.” On his next two shots, he hit the ball into a sand trap, then put it over the edge of the green. He missed the putt and lost the Master’s because he had first lost his focus (Carol Mann, The 19th Hole, quoted in Reader’s Digest).

Many people forget what their purpose in life is. Many more never knew. What is our over-riding, number one goal? The Bible tells us: “We make it our goal to please [God]” (2 Corinthians 5:9). Said another way: “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Our number one goal in life is to honor and please the Lord. This takes an obedient serving heart. It takes a heart that wants to worship God in his church. But the entire focus is to please Him.

THE ANSWER IS BLOWING IN THE WIND

frank_20131231_4_vectorizedAny runner, cyclist, or truck driver will have experienced this phenomenon. When you are going into a headwind, you notice it. The wind buffets your efforts, you feel every moment of discomfort and pushback. However, when you go back in the other direction, when the wind is at your back, you don’t much think about how it is pushing you along, if you are even mindful of it.
The headwind is constantly fought and on your mind; the tailwind isn’t as noticed and quickly forgotten.
It’s not just a wind issue. The problems and difficulties of life tend to be right in our face, a constant reminder, yet the blessings we receive, the good parts, we tend to let slip away.
Is it any wonder we are miserable?
Right now if I asked you to tell me things that are wrong in your world, you could answer in a moment and probably have a hard time limiting them to five. However, if we really sat down and thought about all we have and how we have been blessed, the list of good to bad would out weight it astronomically.
Next time you curse the headwinds of life, you are wondering why things are so hard, why everything seems so wrong, stop and check the wind. I bet the headwinds of life are not much more than the tailwinds. Count your blessings. Think about the advantages you have. That thankfulness will help to offset the obtrusiveness of life’s problems.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Psalm 103:2)

Our congregation has long supported efforts to share God’s word with people seeking their creator. For many years we have supported the efforts of EASTERN EUROPEAN MISSIONS with a yearly contribution of support. Each year as EEM seeks to fundraise to support their efforts, we have taken an opportunity to increase awareness of this work and to give the congregation opportunity to individually support prayerfully and if desired by additional financial contributions. On Sunday, September 16th, a special collection will be taken for EEM. Contributions should be earmarked “EEM”. Prayerfully consider your support.
For the elders, Ken D
EEMFOR FREEDOM (Galatians 5:1) Jesus came to set the captives of this world free (Luke 4:18), and those He has redeemed have been charged to join Him in that mission (Matt. 28:19). God continues to open doors and provide opportunities to join him on His mission as we print and distribute Bibles in 30 countries in over 20 languages. We invite you and your church to join our MDS campaign to share God’s Word and His liberating power!
After the fall of the Soviet Union and the lifting of the Iron Curtain, Eastern Europeans jubilantly celebrated the political freedom they had long been denied. But few have realized the true freedom that comes from knowing God’s Word. Since 1961 EEM has been delivering the Bible and this year we continue to have an opportunity to share true freedom only experienced through knowing Jesus.
Thank you for your support as we begin our 2018 Million Dollar Sunday (MDS) annual fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $2.4 Million. Our Million Dollar Sunday campaign provides funding for Bibles and Bible-based materials, free to all. Your financial partnership in this campaign will transform lives as freedom in Christ and His love is proclaimed! Donation of $5 provides individual biblical book or bible and $1000 provides an entire school with biblical materials. Tens of thousands of biblical books and Bibles are planned to be delivered to Poland, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Serbia. For Freedom, Give God’s Word!
