WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?

Mark 10:51

Imagine for a moment that Jesus is literally standing in front of you. With bated breath you wait for Him to say something and then, to your surprise, His words are in the form of a question, “What do you want Me to do for you?” You might have expected Him to say, “Get your life right…” Follow me…” or even “Go therefore and make disciples… ” but no, these are different words, “What do you want Me to do for you?” We shouldn’t think such a question to be all that strange seeing that Jesus asked it more than once.

On one occasion, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him saying, “Teacher we want You to do whatever we ask.” and He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you” (Mark 10:35-38)? If you remember the story, you know that they requested to each sit, one on His right hand and the other on His left, in glory (Mark 10:37). They did not understand what real greatness in the Kingdom meant, but Jesus would explain that it would be the practice of service and not a position of prestige that would determine such (Mark 10:38-45).

In the same chapter, blind Bartimaeus, after crying out to Jesus, was called to the Lord where Jesus would ask him, “What do you want Me to do for you” (Mark 10:51)? Bartimaeus requested to receive his sight and his request was granted (Mark 10:52). Therefore, for Jesus to pose this question is not strange at all.

So, as we began, what would you do if Jesus asked what He could do for you? Would you ask for greater health? In John 5, Jesus asked a man who had been lame 38 years if he wanted to be made well (John 5:6). In essence, the Lord was asking what He could do for the man. If you know the story the man desired such and was cured albeit on the Sabbath day (Mark 5-9). Better health is an appropriate request.

Would you ask for greater faith? In Mark 9:14-29, a boy was brought to Jesus who was possessed by a mute spirit that would throw him down, cause him to foam at the mouth, gnash his teeth and become rigid. Jesus’ disciples could not cast the spirit out. When the father approached Jesus and spoke to Him regarding his boy the Lord said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes” (23), to which the father replied. “Lord I believe, help my unbelief” (24)! As important as faith is (Heb. 11:26), a better request could not have been made.

Would you ask for a greater relationship with the Lord? This is what Paul desired when he said, “…that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings being conformed to His death (Philippians 3:10). He of course, was given his desire (2 Timothy 1:12).

There’s nothing more important than a right relationship with the Lord Jesus growing in His grace and knowledge (2 Peter 3:18). And it’s for the asking. The gracious Lord of Heaven still says, “What do you want Me to do for you?” What’s your request?

We are blessed to frequently hear of various activities of our fellow workers in the kingdom. Our brother Mike Udam just sent us this report from recent Nigeria evangelism activities. Please keep the work there and around the world in your prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Dearly Beloved,

2022 CHRISTIAN FAMILY RETREAT

My family participated in the 2022 Christian Family Retreat in Port Harcourt between the 14th and 19th of this month.

I got back to Ogoja today after driving 450km and taught Bible study before getting to my house. The retreat affords participants to have quality time with the family, pray with other families, learn parenting skills and work on our bonding skills with our wives. It started 7 years ago and its main aim is to build stronger ties within the family and amongst families.

On Sunday, all the 12 families (58 persons) worshipped at the church meeting at Rumokwuta where I was privileged to serve as the Bible class teacher. My lesson was on THE COST OF BEING A CHRISTIAN. We were refreshed physically and spiritually.

Now I am set for serious work. I shall be speaking to youths this Friday in Calabar, my state capital on Internet Evangelism. On the 30th of April, I shall be speaking to Adults in a lectureship on 1Cor 15:58 at the church meeting in my village Adagom. For 4 days between 3rd and 7th May, I shall be leading my evangelism team to a town called Bebi near the famous Obudu Cattle ranch for a church planting exercise.

Then by 12th of the same May, Lord willing, I shall be speaking at another town called Mbok in their annual lectureship on a topic CHRISTIAN AND CULTURE, KNOWING THE BOUNDARIES.

Between 27th and 30th May, we are planning a mega evangelism hoping to lead us in planting a congregation where I go to preach every Monday. We make the plans and await the approval from the almighty.

Thank you for the huge support that you blessed me. It has helped me meet up with all my numerous engagements. Keep me in your prayers for good health, and safety at all times. Just this evening, one very strong and vibrant brother died in a ghastly bike and tricycle accident in Taraba state. He will be greatly missed for his zeal and love of the work of the Lord all over the northern states of Nigeria.

God bless you.

IT’S HARD TO GIVE IT TO GOD

Photo by Tara Winstead on Pexels.com

Sometimes when we go through tough stretches (often made by our own hands!), we procrastinate about turning to God. We think that because we make dumb decisions that we must always figure out a way on our own. God would help us if we would tum to Him. At least if we turned to Him, we would be more likely to hold ourselves more accountable and stop making unwise decisions.

Matthew 7:7 tells us to seek and ask God and He will answer. He doesn’t always answer in the way we expect, but we can be confident that His answer is always right! Having complete faith in God and trusting Him goes a long way in bringing comfort and stability to our lives.

We’ve programmed ourselves into believing we can and must be able to overcome all adversities without any help. That is so far from the truth and gives no place for our Lord. If we could solve all problems, then Jesus died for nothing. Man could never solve his sin problem because he (we) is (are) so weak. If we couldn’t solve our sin problems, why would we think we have the solution to all of our other problems?

Please don’t misunderstand. I’m not saying that we just pray to God and stand back and be a spectator! We must be part of any solution. We do what we can and ask God to please make up the difference. Philippians 4:13 tells us that we can do all things, but it reminds us that we have divine power on our side to make things work. I’m not speaking of miracles, but God’s help. I can’t know when and how exactly God helps, if I did that would constitute a miracle. But I can know that God is with me and is doing things that I can’t see or feel that are in my favor.

It all comes down to allowing God in our lives and lending His almighty hands to our problems . We must have faith and trust in Him. Have you ever had a friend or loved one tell you, “Let me handle it?” Give it to God sometimes, let Him handle it!

We have been blessed for many years to help evangelism in the West African nation of Nigeria. One of the individuals we support is our brother Sylvanus Obi. He is a village preacher, who is not an English as a 1st language speaker and has limited access to technology. Sylvanus has a love for spreading the gospel. He also has a thankful heart. Below is a recent thank you note in response to our continued support this year. It is presented just as he wrote it, with some corrected words added in brackets for better clarity. A little challenging to read but from the heart of a beloved brother. Keep Sylvanus in your prayers. For the elders, Ken D

GOD’S DESIGN IN THE WORLD AROUND US

In the late 1700’s, a fellow named William Paley gave an illustration about how we look

at the world around us. He said that if you were walking through a field and came across

a watch on the ground, you would not think that watch came about naturally. Instead,

you would recognize that because of the complexity of the watch with all its gears and

organization, someone must have made that watch. Why is it that we do not recognize

the same thing when we look at the complex world around us?

The Bible says that the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows

His handiwork (Psa. 19:1). When we truly examine the solar system in which the earth

resides, and the galaxy, and all the other galaxies around us, it is clear that there is an

amazing level of organization.

Likewise, when we look at the world on the cellular level, we see this same

complex organization. Cells are organized like factories, with specialized parts working

together for a common purpose. The very DNA that produces new cells in our body

carries information on how to do this. Information must come from intelligence, not

from random chance.

This sort of design that is evident in the universe points us to a Creator. Because this

design exists, the Bible declares that “the fool has said in his heart that there is no

God” (Psa. 14:1). Since God has made Himself evident through His creation, man is

without excuse (Rom. 1:18-22). Mark and remember these passages as God’s word on

the evidence of creation.  –  Matt Clifton, Judsonia church of Christ Judsonia, AR

For many years we have partnered with Gospel Chariot Missions in spreading the Gospel mainly on the continent of Africa. We are excited to see that their work is spreading to share God in Latin America among seekers there. Please keep this great work in your prayers. From the elders, Ken D

Hi Everyone,

This is our Latin American report and there is so much happening with this amazing work. The Spanish speaking world is on fire and our director of Latin America is Fernando Toledo, and here is a classic example of one man being trained up in the 4 fields evangelism tools and who is now reaching not only a town, but a continent for Jesus as churches call on him to come and equip them and teach them how to reach their communities with simple, biblical and reproducible evangelism tools.

BIG NEWS.

1. We will be building a big gospel chariot for Latin America based out of the USA. Let’s pray, if it’s God’s Will, that we get a fleet of them in years to come. God is up to something big.

2. We are touring the USA in October, sharing some wonderful stories about what God is doing through you all. Fernando will be with me and some others as we travel. So please join us in a city near you.

That said, our USA Tour in October will not be just about promoting our work and raising funds, but even more important is contacting every Hispanic Church of Christ in every city we plan to visit; inviting them to come hear what God is doing in the Spanish world. Why are we doing that? Because we have lostness in mind and we are following God’s leads in the Spanish world. God is Great and we need to thank you all for what is happening throughout the world. Let us pray for Latin America and the Hispanic population in the USA and not forgetting our English brethren, but this is about Latin America and you partnering with us.

In Him,

Brother George Funk and the amazing GCM and GSM team

CHRISTIANS AND LETHAL FORCE

Much had been said some time ago about the “church shooting” in Texas on Sunday, December 29, 2019 ― the right and wrong of it. The initial shooter was clearly wrong. He was evil incarnate, whose history of bad choices ended in a final bad choice to take innocent human life. God’s judicial standard played out in textbook fashion: “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in His own image” (Gen. 9:6).

Which raises the question, “Is lethal force ever justified?” We are not addressing the war question or whether a Christian can be a cop. Most Christians, I assume, would not object to such, based on Romans 13 and the role of civil government. But what about individual Christians? Is it ever right for a Christian to take the life of another human being?

If killing is motivated by personal hatred, anger, jealousy, or revenge, the answer is clearly “no‟, for those passions are themselves sinful, and any behavior flowing from them would be sinful as well (Matt. 15:18-19; Gal. 5:19-21, etc.).

But note carefully God’s reason for justifying the use of deadly force in Genesis 9: “for God made man in His own image.” The reason a murderer deserved to die was not because his life had no value, but because the life of his innocent victim did.

That principle carried forward to the Mosaic age. Though the sixth command said, “You shall not kill” (Ex 20:13), other laws justified the use of lethal force, both judicially (21:14) and individually (22:2). The unspoken reason for such provisions was clear: the life of the innocent victim, created in the image of God, had value.

The same principle is true today. We, too, are created in the image of God with great worth. No wonder that God, in the New Testament age, retained capital punishment as a just response to evil (Rom. 13:4; Acts 25:11).

But what about Christians? Although Jesus condemned the use of armed force to further the kingdom (Matt. 26:51-54; John 18:36), He actually commanded the apostles to arm themselves (Luke 22:35-39). Those swords were not used to defend against persecution (Acts 12:1-3). So, what purpose did they serve? They would have certainly deterred evil threats against their lives in their numerous evangelistic journeys.

Some push back, “Turn the other cheek” (Matt. 5:39). But this was spoken concerning vengeance (vs. 38); and protecting innocent life is not taking vengeance. Others say, “Love your neighbor” (Matt. 22:39). To which we reply, “Exactly!” Is it “loving” for a man to allow an intruder to kill his neighbor, rape his wife, and sell his daughter into slavery? Pity the poor family whose head interprets love this way! First Timothy 5:8 is not just about food!

Lethal force does not negate trust in God. David trusted God even as he picked up the stones for his sling. The Psalmist wrote, “Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Psa. 82:4). So, let’s do that!

HIS PROMISES ARE SURE

We left Ogoja for Onitsha for a very important marriage enrichment seminar – Oba Couples retreat. We were informed that our host Chidi Chibunna, was involved in outdoor evangelism in a town near Onitsha called Nando. He asked us to stop at a popular junction in Anambra state called Awkuzu Junction. The idea was for us to join him at the point of the evangelism and after the exercise, he will drive us home. After the evangelism, those who followed him and my team of three couples could not fit into his picnic car. A young man, Okechukwu Israel, stepped forward and offered to use his car to pick the left-over brethren. Our wives and brother Patrick Woshor joined the picnic car while Cornelius Monjok and I followed the brother in his car.

After an hour trip through Nnewi to Oba in Idemili LGA instead of through Onitsha because of hold ups, the brother dropped us and we were very grateful to God for using him to bless us. Five minutes after dropping us off, armed robbers attacked his car at a bad spot on the road leading to his house around Obosi. That spot is usually manned by the police. Unsuspectingly, he ran into the hands of the bad people and they snatched his car at gunpoint and all that he had on him. 8 minutes later we got a call that the brother has lost his car to armed men close to his house. We were devastated and emotionally disturbed. How can God allow the very car that was used to convey his spokesmen to be snatched at gunpoint?

A decision was reached to speak to God about it. We did and waited on the Lord. 56 hours later, the car was recovered by the police. The robbers ran into the police the next day and could not speak concretely about the car. As the strength of the scrutiny from the police intensified, they simply ran away leaving the car with all the phones and Bibles in the car just as they took it.

We thank God. He has promised to always care for us and demand our total faith in him. At the end, he has shown himself once again to be the promise keeper.

The faith of the young man has been tested and our trust in the lord has been strengthened.

To God be the glory. The Mission to Oba was successfully discharged to the glory of God. It was a couples retreat and 15 couples attended. I spoke about the Man, his wife and his wealth. We had break-out sessions and it was beautiful. The ugly incident almost robbed us of our joy. But the Lord intervened. I am back to Ogoja and met the family well.

Sincerely yours

Mike Udam

TIME CHANGE

Photo by Todd Trapani on Pexels.com

Most of the time, change is good. We all want to grow, get stronger, learn more, see more places, etc. Certainly we are aware of the fact that our methods and tactics must change and adapt when we become ineffective. We must take advantage of opportunities as they are presented. On and on we could go.

But not all change is good. “Change” continues to barrel over our country at a rapidly destructive pace. The powers-that-be seem to be dead-set at making it more and more difficult to be an openly practicing and faithful Christian. Laws are being established that, if followed, would effectively silence the preaching of the Gospel and remove the church from its God-appointed role as the defender of divine truth.

Consider how times have changed in the last 240 years when it comes to the way that worship and general ethical-moral behavior is concerned. On July 5, 1775, General George Washington issued this order to the Continental Army:

“The General most earnestly requires and expects a due observance of those articles of war established for the government of the army, which forbid profane cursing, swearing, and drunkenness. And in like manner, he requires and expects of all officers and soldiers not engaged in actual duty, a punctual attendance of Divine services, to implore the blessing of Heaven upon the means used for our safety and defense.”

Washington said his army could not curse or swear?

Same is true for soldiers of Christ (Eph. 4:29-5:4).

Washington said his army could not be drunkards?

Same is true for soldiers of Christ (1 Cor. 6:10; Gal. 5:21).

Washington said his army was required to attend worship services?

Same is true for soldiers of Christ (Acts 20:7; Heb. 10:25).

Washington said his army was expected to implore the blessing of Heaven in supplication and prayer?

Same is true for soldiers of Christ (1 Tim. 2:1; 1 Thess. 5:17).

Today, public officials could not get away with issuing an order similar to the one given by General Washington. How times have changed! – Bart Warren, South Green Street church of Christ, Glasgow, KY

BEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES

Recently in response to the need for relief efforts for Ukrainian Christians during the current conflict there, we contributed towards this effort. We then received this note and wanted to share it with you. Please pray for the Ukraine and its people. For the elders, Ken D

Photo from Sunset International Bible Institute

Dear Brethren,

Thank you for your generous financial gift of $5000 to help meet the needs of suffering people in new Ukraine. The apostle Paul said, “So then, while we have opportunity, let’s do good to all people, and especially those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:10) That is what your generosity is making possible.

Through our contacts with congregations, preachers, and church members still in Ukraine, we are sending relief funding to those who cannot leave their cities which are under siege. As refugees leave eastern Ukraine and head west, we are helping to fund relief efforts of congregations in western Ukraine, which are ministering to hundreds of Christian refugees. In partnership with contacts in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Latvia, and Estonia, we are helping those who are crossing national borders with little more than the “shirt on their backs.”

Things are changing daily in Ukraine and needs will continue to evolve. We will try to keep you informed through updates on our website and email reports. Please remember to pray for our dear brothers and sisters and for all the lost people of Ukraine.

Again, thank you and God bless you. As the Lord Jesus Himself said, “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35.)

Gratefully, Truitt Adair
