APATHY: The Greatest Enemy of Our Freedom

This timely article appeared in a recent edition of the “Christian Woman” magazine, written by Debbie Dupuy, member at the church of Christ at Macedonia in Florence, Alabama. Some appropriate changes were made in this article in order to address men and women alike.

APATHY: The Greatest Enemy of Our Freedom

As a Christian, do you ever feel overwhelmed by a culture that has a “live and let live” philosophy, where open-mindedness and tolerance seem to be valued above else? Do you believe that as a nation we are headed down a slippery slope when it comes to our morals? Are you under the assumption that as Christians we should just keep our opinions to ourselves, especially when it comes to voting?

Maybe you believe you cannot make a difference in the political process, so why vote? Or maybe you have said to yourself: “I am only one. What can I do?” Well, hold on, dear fellow Christian! We should not grow weary; instead, we should strengthen our loins, roll up our sleeves, and get busy to bring about righteousness in our nation.

Apathy among Christian voters is at an all-time high, and maybe that is because we have believed the lies expressed in the media and by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that churches, Christians and politics should remain separate. Separation of church and state has been interpreted by some to mean that church members must separate themselves from the election process. “Christians do not need to get involved in politics,“ some will say (this was even preached from the pulpit in days gone by!) But we Christians who believe the Bible to be true and the final authority concerning morality must think carefully about this issue before deciding to be uninvolved.

First, we should ask ourselves these questions: Do we believe the Bible to be the source of all truth? Is God unconcerned about what people do and believe? As Christians, should we turn a blind eye to moral issues clearly defined within Scripture and the impact they are having on our society and in our homes? Is God pleased when His children are indifferent toward the values being promoted within a nation?

What Are the Facts? The Scriptures are clear when it comes to all these things. Yet too many Christians have hesitated to become involved in any aspect of government. I believe we have allowed our thinking to be guided by the news media, by the voice of atheistic teachers in schools and universities, and by those who do not base any moral decisions upon God’s Word. The cry of “separation of church and state” has long been misapplied and promoted with misleading information by those who would like for God-fearing people to remain uninvolved.

At the same time, we, as Christians, have become uneducated about our nation’s history and what the Bible calls us to do as believers. Instead of accepting our responsibilities as citizens, we are too often influenced by the loud voices of secularism and have allowed it to shape our world-view, rather than God’s Word.

America’s founding father’s wanted to ensure the right of every citizen to follow his or her own religious beliefs. Going back to the 1700s and the founding of this nation, the reason for advocating the separation of church and state was to protect our religious freedom from the government. The goal was to keep the government from encroaching upon our freedom to worship God as we believe we should. But somehow the founders’ original purpose has become twisted by the media and our courts so that now most Christians believe we are to keep silent when it comes to politics and the election process. This idea is neither biblical nor true to the original ideas found in our nation’s historical documents. Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution do we find the words “separation of church and state.”

As Christians, we should awake from the deep sleep of apathy and realize our moral obligation – first to the Lord, to stand for righteousness, and then to our families and their future and to our nation. Statistics prove that if Christians voted, we could determine the outcome of every political race in this country!

(This concludes the first part of the article. The second installment will be in next week’s bulletin.)

Jesus

What is astonishing is the variety of people that Jesus met and ministered to: men and women, old and young, Jew, Samaritan, Syrophoenician, Greek and Roman, Sadducee and Pharisee, Zealot and Herodian, rich men and poor men. Lepers, demented, blind, deaf, lame, tax collectors, harlots, fishermen, lawyers. The gospels were not deliberately setting out to list all this variety of people – but here was a man who drew the crowds and attracted individuals . . .

One is immediately struck by the contrasts – Jesus will dine with the despised and the honored, with friends and with adversaries and critics. He speaks out for the poor, but He does not ostracize the rich (Michael Griffith, The Example of Jesus, pp. 127 & 129).

For some reason, many people throughout history and from a wide variety of religious beliefs have defined religion solely in terms of a relationship with God. Yet faith is not only a vertical business conducted between heaven and earth but it has great relation to the horizontal connection we have with our fellow man. Part of the genius of Jesus of Nazareth was showing that intimacy with God necessitates the right treatment of people. You cannot claim a love of God, whom you have not seen, without loving the people you see every day. To Jesus, religion is not just vertical and God-centered; it is horizontal and people -centered as well.  — Mike Gravois

When Are You “Too Old”?

Sometimes in the church we hear people decline an opportunity to serve with words like these: “I’ve served my time. Let the younger ones do it. I’m just going to rest”. This always makes me think of a statement about Daniel in Daniel 6:3. Darius, the king of the Medes, was going to select Daniel as his administrator for the entire kingdom. Sounds good, doesn’t it? But do you realize that Daniel was about 88 years old when he was selected for this job? Daniel was chosen because of his attitude, he had an “extraordinary spirit”, and his age was not a factor.

You might think a man Daniel’s age would be living in the past, talking about all the things he used to do. He’d be patting his great-grandchildren on the head and telling them tales about the “good ole days”. But not Daniel. He is still a servant. He has not lost hope. His days are filled with activity. The body may be older, but the spirit remains young.

Years ago, a gospel preacher was asked on his 84th birthday, “Are you going to keep on preaching after 84?” His answer was immediate:

“When there are so many unsaved people around, when there are sorrowing hearts to be comforted, when so many young people are throwing away in Folly’s Court and Carnal Pleasure’s Mart the wealth God gave them at the start, when there are so many evils against which protests must be made, when so many people are lonely on the Sunset Trail, when in 1910 I was married to preaching until death do us part—why should I not, in the 85th year of life, keep on preaching?”

The church needs more like Daniel . . . those with an extraordinary spirit that can inspire, encourage and lead. You are NEVER “too old” if your spirit is right!

There is Danger in Neglect

In a certain mountain village in Europe, a long time ago, a nobleman wondered what legacy he should leave to the local townspeople. At last, he decided to build them a place of worship

No one saw the complete plans for the church building until it was finished. When the people gathered, they marveled at its beauty and completeness. Then someone asked. “But where are the lanterns? How will the building be lit?” The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls. Then he gave each family a lantern that they were bring with them each time they came to the assembly. “Each time you are here the area where you are seated will be lit,” the nobleman said. “Each time you are not here, that area of the building will be dark.”

Thought: whenever we neglect the worship assembly, others who are in attendance miss not only our presence, but the encouragement we could have offered them.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another . . . ” (Hebrews 10:24-25a).

Drifting

The writer of the book of Hebrews has several warnings for us. The first is about drifting. He says, “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away” (Hebrews 2:1).

Drifting through life has become the easiest course to follow. It’s easier to accept a little immorality in our friends than to rebuke them. It’s easier to keep our mouths shut than to stand up and defend the truth. It’s easier to make excuses than to do what GOD says do. The cares of this world, the lack of knowledge, and the failure to comply push us to this easier course.

The most interesting thing about drifting is this: we drift away from righteousness, but no one ever drifts into righteousness. Righteousness is intentional. If you seek religion that makes you comfortable, Christianity is not it. There is no such thing as a passive Christian. A Christian’s life is not on “golden pond.” We are not called to tranquility. We are called to peace, but it is peace in the midst of struggle.

Drifting leads to unbelief and then a complete falling away. This is why the writer says; pay more attention to the Word so that you do not start drifting. — borrowed
