LOSING OUR SENSES

senses-lost-wallpaperWhen unusual behavior is observed in another, someone may say, “They have lost their senses.” It seems proper, based on certain observations, to say that many people today seem to have lost their senses! Some have lost their:

Sense of God. More and more a practical atheism is getting around (Titus 1:16). People admit they believe in God, but act as if He did not exist. Like God’s people of old, they have “pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears” (Zech. 7:11).

Sense of Sin. Sin isn’t sin anymore! It has changed to “a mistake,” “maladjustment,” “sickness,” etc. One writer pointed out that since Eisenhower (1953), no president has used the word “sin” in addressing our national problems!

Sense of Shame. In Jeremiah’s day the ability to blush had been lost. “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush…” (Jeremiah 6:15).

Tragically, these losses lead to a greater loss yet: the loss of the soul. Reader, have you lost your senses? Obeying the truth is the sensible thing to do (1 Peter 1:22-23; 3:21). – Bill Dillon via Gospel Gems

Southern Africa Bible College Newsletter, September 2015

Twenty sixteen marks 50 years for the Southern Africa Bible College. And what a 50 years it has been. Fourteen hundred attendees from over 30 countries. Now leading in over 40 countries. Accredited Bachelor of Theology degree. A 22-acre campus with dorms for men and women, along with married student housing. It is quite a story. Currently we have 39 students.

SABC Class of 2015 takes a break during their winter mission trip! Their report, reported by Mpendulo Kevin Mothoa in his own words: Three weeks later and more than 5,000km travelled from Joburg to East London, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town then back to Joburg, we thank the Lord for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we had as the Southern Africa Bible College third -year class of 2015. We are also truly grateful to Him for a safe, hassle free trip. We met and made friends with amazing people, both young and old, people who love the Lord and His people and His word. There isn’t a place we went to where we were not made to feel at home.

We thank the Lord for all the brethren who hosted us, and praise Him still for everyone we met. We were privileged to be involved in the programmes of various congregations: Area-Wide Sing Alongs, Vacation Bible School, a Youth Workshop, a Gospel Campaign, Tract Drives, and among others, Philani and Tshepo were even invited to a local radio station in East London to discuss the topic: “How to Change our World”. There were at least eight baptisms on our trip, both from our work and the work of other brethren (glory be to God), and countless other souls were edified by the word of God. We are humbled that the Lord chose us to have such an impact in the lives of people through the preaching of His word. Thank you to everyone who kept us in their thoughts and prayers. A special word of appreciation also goes out to all those individuals and congregations who supported us financially. May the Lord bless you all abundantly. We are already back in class now for the final stretch of our studies. Please continue to keep us all in your prayer s, as we keep you in ours.

Please continue to pray for these students and this school. For the elders, Ken D.

IS THE CHURCH DYING?

shutterstock_456264161“He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end” (Luke 1:33).

The most recent Pew Forum survey revealed that Christianity in America is in decline, and some have suggested that Christianity is dying. The number of “nones”, those who have no religious affiliation, has grown from 16.1 to 22.8 percent since 2007. The number of those who call themselves Christians in America has declined from 78.4 to 70.6 percent.

Most of this decline occurred among mainline Protestants (18.4 to 14.7 percent) and Catholics (23.9 to 20.8 percent). Evangelicals (which include the churches of Christ in this survey) declined less than one percent. The number of Christians with strong convictions has pretty much stayed the same, but many cultural Christians (people who call themselves Christians because of culture) and nominal Christians (people who do not take their faith very seriously) are becoming “nones”.

The churches of Christ have declined in recent years. We are losing more than 8,000 members and about fifty churches every year (147 congregations from 2012 to 2015). In spite of this, we still have the fourth most congregations of any religious group in America. In actual attendance of the Lord’s Day, we rank 8th. We surpass almost everyone in the percentage of members who attend church and who give.

As you can see, we have much to do to take the gospel to the lost. The world has always been worldly and deceived by false religion. We must do all we can to preach the truth in love, so that by all means we might save some.

We all want to share the Good News of Jesus better. World Bible School has simple, effective tools that let everyday Christians share Jesus with real people who want to learn. You can be an online friend for people who have enrolled on their own to study the Bible. Anyone can do it — youth, singles, families and seniors. Right now, WBS students are waiting for someone to help them. You can become WBS study helper today at <worldbibleschool.net/teach>. Phil Sanders (via Joe Winnett)

footprints-hiBEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES . . .

In August we received a report from Dennis Welch in Cambodia. We all have been excited by how we have been ab le to be involved in this wonderful work. When we involve ourselves as God’s people in the labor of love in the spreading of the Gospel, we often concentrate on how the efforts will affect the lost. A portion of Dennis’ report, below, can tur n our thoughts towards how the spreading of the Gospel can affect God’s people themselves.

Greetings from Cambodia! August 2015 “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.” Psalm 145:3. We are so grateful for the ways God continues to work fervently in the Kingdom of Cambodia and in our lives. Furthermore, we are thankful for the many blessings each of you pour out on our behalf in prayers, encouragements, support and love. Please pray without ceasing for the work you are doing with us and through us. There’ve been lots of great things happening for us and our ministries, especially the SNACK Program. SNACK was blessed to host interns Chandler Gum and Brandi Robert who participated in the Worldwide Witness program of Abilene Christian University. Through the six weeks they spent with the SNACK Program they shared that their experience was life changing. Chandler shared,

“God enlightened me on what joy looks like in the midst of the unknown. In the faces of the children and in the time with the members of SNACK I was being taught discipleship. I was in awe of the way they all gave so much. The children poured out so much love on us. The staff gave so much of their time and attention day in and day out without complaint. I saw within the SNACK team disciples joyfully chasing after the Lord’s command to love one another. I will never forget my time in Cambodia, but more importantly I will never forget my time with these people because they are the story, the core of this program that makes it so impactful, so efficacious, and so memorable. I can tell you that SNACK is a pearl in Phnom Penh, a treasure of God’s love spreading and flourishing to those who need it most.”

Join us in a prayer of thanksgiving for servants like these. Also be conscious that those who work in the spread of the Gospel of Jesus are affected by that Gospel themselves. May we all grow as disciples. For the elders, Ken D

TOO MUCH PRESSURE?

pressureThe USS Thresher was a nuclear submarine that was designed to go to great depths due to its great strength. The steel bulkheads were built to withstand great pressure from tons of sea water. But, on April 9, 1963, it went too deep during routine deep-diving tests, and was subsequently crushed into little pieces like a plastic model, whose wreckage was spread over an area of 7000 miles. The pressure was just too great for the ship to handle. Yet, astonishingly, there are fish that live even deeper in the sea than the mighty submarine was able to go. How do those fish survive? From a scientific standpoint, they have ‘pressure’ on the inside that’s equal to the water pressure on the outside.

How will a Christian survive the outside pressures of life with all of its trials and temptations? By having equal ‘pressure,’ or equal force, on the inside. God is the only one who can provide that as we allow His Spirit and His will to transform our lives…from the inside out!

In this regard, I am reminded of Paul’s comforting assertion in 1 Cor. 10:13, “God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” In this passage, we see God exerting His influence in a way that cancels out worldly pressure. Are you relying on Him to see you through? Jesse Wagner S. Green St. church of Christ Glasgow, KY BULLETIN DIGEST

THE BENEFITS OF SERIOUS MEDITATION

505534816_640Unfortunately, when one speaks of “meditation,” what often comes to mind is the transcendental meditation taught by the new age movement. However, when we discuss the topic from a biblical sense, it neither involves chanting cross-legged with one’s eyes closed, or the “getting in touch with your inner self.” No, we are discussing the practice of taking time to devote one’s self to DRAW CLOSER TO GOD, not to ourselves.

Jesus instructed that a wonderful place to pray is alone in your room. Why? Because there is no temptation to pray for “man’s approval,” and because there are no distractions. We are to be a people who give ourselves to prayer, and “pray without ceasing,” which will certainly involve the intense pouring out of our hearts to God which can only be done when we are alone with Him. In addition, we all DESPERATELY need alone time to study the things which are most needed in our lives, and allow God to speak to us through His blessed Word.

Imagine a pond. If you toss a stone into the water on a windy day, where the water is being blown about, the stone will make little effect. But if you throw that same stone on a calm day, where the water is like glass? The water ripples from impact of the stone, and the effect will even reach the farthest shore! Isn’t it the same in our lives? If we ever give God any “calmness” in which to impact us, will all the “ripples” of our lives drown out His voice? – Kerry Williams, Valley View church of Christ, Jonesboro, AR

WITH SYMPATHY

Bill Flanary’s sister, Bonnie Gipson, passed away on Friday, August 14th in Springdale, Arkansas. A memorial service took place on Wednesday, August 19th, at the Elmdale Baptist church in Springdale. Our heartfelt sympathy, love and prayers go out to Bill, Mary K. and all in the family and friends of Bonnie.

WITH SYMPATHY

“My family so appreciate all the prayers, the love and the concern expressed and demonstrated for my mom during her health struggles of the last year. She so enjoyed her visit here and knowing this congregation’s love first hand. She always spoke well of all of you to all her friends in California. This last Monday, she left her struggles behind in this world for an eternity of peace with God. Mom was cremated and my family will plan an interment for a later date. We cannot fully express how thankful we are, to be part of God’s family here. God bless, Ken & Gail Darnell.” Our sympathy, love and prayers go out to all those who were loved by Mittie and to those who loved her.

BEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES . . .

The living and spreading of the Gospel takes many forms. There are many different ways that the Highland Lakes congregation has been involved recently.

Last week about two dozen good folks gathered at the building to work on processing World Bible School lessons so that they could be mailed to hundreds of hungry souls in Nigeria where hopefully follow-ups can be made by Sylvester Imogoh and other local evangelists. At the end of the morning, 1,167 mailings were ready for the post office. We can and should pray that each one sent will be received by people with a heart seeking our God.

Our congregation’s involvement in spreading of the Gospel in Southeast Asia has been going on for many years. A week ago at the 54th Asian Mission Forum in the Philippines, our missionary to the Philippines, Richard Emperado and his family and our missionaries to Cambodia, Dennis and Sharon Welch and their daughter Theary were all in attendance. We pray that God will bless them all in the work of spreading the word and are thankful we can help support their efforts to God’s glory.

This week one of the families of our congregation suffered the loss of home and possessions following a devastating fire. Quickly as word spread, God’s people here began seeking ways to help and comfort this family. Currently an effort is being made to help them by collecting funds to buy meals and necessities. Donations can be given to any of the elders or to Paula W. Your help can aid this family greatly as we strive to show the love of our God.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 (ESV) For the elders, Ken D

WHY AREN’T YOU CRYING?

thChristian men and women cry. They shed tears of guilt, of contrition; tears of sorrow for sins. Ever sat down and simply wept over your spiritual failures? James wrote, “Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom” (James 4:9). Over what are they, are we, to mourn and weep, wail? Their sins or our sins? (vs. 8).

Paul says, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret… (2 Corinthians 7:10). When my heart is anguished over my own sins, it helps me to turn in the right direction. It helps me to turn to God. It helps me to be a better person, and to do the things necessary to be forgiven of God. In forgiveness comes comfort. That is why Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

When Peter was confronted with guilt, the guilt of denying the Lord three times, “he wept bitterly” (Matthew 26:75). It was a terrible sin. Peter had done something so very shameful. To deny the seriousness of that transgression would be to insult the Lord. It was good for him to experience the pain of his guilt, and in weeping for his sin he demonstrated a heart that was still sensitive to good and evil, a heart capable of repentance.

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17).

CONGRATULATIONS

Larry & Evelyn Moore have a new granddaughter! On Friday, August 7th, their son David completed the adoption of Susan Elisabeth (Lizzie) Moore. She is a precious seven year old and is now officially their 7th grandchild. God’s richest blessing on all!

VISITING FOR THE MASTER

VISITATION PROGRAM Team #2 (leaders: Cary & Brenda Miller) will meet on Wednesday, August 19th, at 6:30 pm in the library for their assignments.

footprints-hiBEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES . . .

“But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:24-28

The apostle Paul reminded the church at Corinth that it was one body with different members and they often had different types of gifts by which to meet the needs of the body. As the church in Kingsland, we also have been blessed with a variety of gifts. It is a blessing that the gift of helping is found abundantly among those given to our congregation. There have been many times and ways that God has allowed us to bless others.

The rains in May caused several incidents of flooding which damaged property and claiming several lives. The Hill country town of Wimberley, Texas, about 85 south of Kingsland, was hard hit. The elders looked for what was needed to assist those in Wimberley. Our preacher, Joe Winnett, spoke with the minister of the Wimberley church of Christ to discuss their needs. The church there and most of its members escaped any flood damage. However, one sister-in-Christ (age 73) lost essentially everything she owned. The Wimberley church has been focusing on getting her back on her feet and helping her rebuild. They welcomed any help we could give.

When our congregation was made known of the need, there was a great outpouring of financial contributions. God’s gift of helping was greatly demonstrated. The Highland Lakes church of Christ was able to send the Wimberley church $2500 to help them to the honor of our God. God be praised and we continue to support those in Wimberley in our thoughts and prayers. For the elders, Ken D
