5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:5-7 (ESV)

We are blessed to share our love for the brethren of Nigeria and a love for God with many of our fellow laborers in the Lord who labor there. What follows is part of a letter that Doug Wheeler mentioned in the bulletin two weeks ago, that he received from one of our Nigerian brethren, Godwin I. who preaches in Nigeria. Notice his positive, thankful attitude in spite of the problems that surround the people of Nigeria. Please keep all the brethren in Nigeria and their trials in your thoughts and prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Dear Brothers,

I greet you with the love of the Lord. I hope that all is well with you, and this letter finds you and your families in sound health.

From what I heard, it was very sad and unfortunate what happen to the people of Haiti during the storms. May God bless the congregations for their help to them.

I am doing my best to teach and preach the word of God here. Recently after staying a long time without a convert, the Lord added a soul to his kingdom. I baptized a young woman of 27 years into the Lord. This convert came as a result of series of lesson I taught, with the title “Why we believe what we believe. She was a member of Assemblies of God church. To God be the praise! I also enrolled 11 people to WBS as students.

Thank God for the November Presidential election in America which was peaceful, I pray God to continue to bless America Amen.

The economic recession in Nigeria is now terrible, immorality and theft is on the increase. When people go to worship on Sunday, thieves break into their houses, eat any food that they see, and steal their properties. A sister in the congregation where I am preaching was affected and she is a widow, one of those you have helped. I have visited her with my wife to encourage and pray for her.

These thieves, for some time now, because of hunger, people now go to farms that are not their own to harvest cassava to eat. What is happening is sad. May God have mercy!

Extend my sincere regards to your families and the saints there. I am preaching the Word.

I remain, Yours in the Love of God, Godwin I.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Gods-Unconditional-Love

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”  1 John 3:1 (ESV)

God’s love for His children stands unmatched by anything this world can offer.  Only the love of God can:

  • Calm the restlessness of your soul
  • Heal any hatred you have experienced
  • Change worry and doubt to hope and security
  • Resolve the anger and bitterness of disappointment
  • Give you a sense of purpose, self-worth, and hope

God never grows tired of you!  He sees the span of your life.  His eye is on the potential that your life holds.  He spends each moment completely absorbed in thoughts of you – developing you, molding you, and blessing you.  So often we miss the blessings of God because we worry about what we should or should not do.  Questions fill our minds:  Did I do it right?  Is God pleased with me?

God loves you, and His love will never change.  God loves you, and there’s not a thing in the world you can do about it.  All we can do is stand in awe of His tremendous love for us and His amazing grace toward us!

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 (ESV)

MORE THOUGHTS ON LOVE

God loves us just the way we are, but he refuses to leave us there, He wants us to have a heart like His.  He wants us to be just like Jesus.  What would our daily life really be like if we really committed ourselves to be like Jesus and do what He tells us to do?

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”  Luke 6:46 (ESV)

“Things are not to be loved, they’re to be used.  The corollary to that is this:  people are not to be used, they’re to be loved.”  – Sheldon Vanauken, good friend of C.S. Lewis

“It is amazing how much time we spend living and caring for things and using people.  What would happen if we took seriously the fact that things are to be used and not loved and people are to be loved and not used? – Randy Harris, LIVING JESUS.

In Matthew 5:27-32, Jesus calls his followers to a different view of the world where people are to be loved, where faithfulness is a deep and powerful characteristic of our lives.  What do you think?  – Via Ken Darnell

CHRIST-DEFINED OR SITUATION DEFINED?

Those of us who have raised children know very well the up and down emotions of a child. Crying one moment and laughing the next. Hungry, or dissatisfied with something, they may “throw a fit”. The emotions of a child run the whole gamut of emotions readily in a very short time.

Only children? Do we not, as adults, do that too? Don’t we often allow the situations we find ourselves in to take control of our emotions? Don’t we, at times, allow external situations to overwhelm us, so that we feel and act in a “fitful” way?

Sometimes what upsets us is a very real and present stress. The loss of a job. The loss of a loved one. An uncontrollable plummet of emotions. But at other times (and more often than not), it is something minor that sends us into orbit. Traffic lights when we are running behind. Trying to navigate through traffic, when the GPS is telling us to go down a road that is blocked off by construction. Some unexpected computer glitch, people, and other common frustrations of life.

Current situations will continue to define our happiness or way of thinking, until we are Christ-defined rather than situation-defined. There are Christians, who right in the very middle of a crisis in their lives reveal such a trusting faith in Jesus. Maybe you have experienced this yourself. They display the peace that transcends all understanding, as the Father brings comfort amidst turmoil; tranquility in the middle of anxiety and uncertainty.

Also, beyond that, there is the everyday. The many things we struggle with as men or women is the ability to calmly, rationally, objectively engage life and deal with the various situations. And as believers, we ought to do better and better at this.

Paul writes in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, ‘Rejoice’”. Where is the apostle when he writes the letter? Prison! Rejoice? Have joy? You better believe it! But only in Christ. Circumstance Christ-defined rather than situation-defined.

Life-with-ChristMay God help us to mature.

We are blessed to share our love for the brethren of Nigeria with our fellow laborer in the Lord, Doug Wheeler, who coordinates much of the support for evangelism in Nigeria from Westside church of Christ in Norman, OK. Update on the Nigerian Evangelism work (February 2017)

Dear beloved Brethren,

I sure do hope you all are doing FINE! We are A-OK up here in the northern part of Texas (Oklahoma! Ha!), and appreciating life as God sees fit to give us!

I want you all to know that I wired monies to Nigeria on January 31st, and part of that wire was the money you gave me for funding the Nigeria 2017 projects. Money was sent to Sylvester I., for him to spend on WBS Seminars that he will conduct in his area. After he has held each of these seminars, then he will send me and you all a report (with pictures) of each of the seminars that those monies funded. He is now at The Great Workshop this week (Feb 7th -11th) in Warri, Delta State.

Brethren, I enclose a letter that I received from a Nigerian preacher named Godwin I. whom both Sylvester and I know well. I am sending it to you all, only to show you all how tough things are in Nigeria, which I think you know. You have helped with benevolent needs in recent times. And I want you to know that someone sent me some extra money to send to brethren in Nigeria to buy food to help out some. I gave some to Godwin. He was to take that money, buy food with it, and give the food out to those who need it, including himself for his family if they need any. He told me by phone the other day that he and his family were OK, but others were really going to appreciate this help of food this time!

Brethren, I am enjoying working only 2 days a week, but can’t seem to keep up things! Ha! I will continue to adjust! I see all my grandkids so often and that is a BIG pleasure to us! I hope these kids keep me YOUNG! Ha! God bless you brethren! Thank you for your support! In Christian love, Doug Wheeler

GOOD NEWS: HOPE!

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through His resurrection from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3).

HOPE

Our hope is living. The Living Bible says: “Now we live in the hope of eternal life.” Christianity is more than a hope for the future, it is a life to be lived now, today! Jesus said: “I came that you might have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Hope is not just for the future, but for today. Today is the day of Salvation, now is the time to live life at its best.

Our hope is in the new birth. “In his great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope.” (1 Pet. 1:3). We are born again to a new life. “Old things have passed away… All things are made new.” (2 Cor. 5:17). There is no guilt of the past, no sins to bind us. We have been raised to walk in a new life; our sanctification is an ongoing process. We are forgiven daily as we walk in the light, as we acknowledge our sins. “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin… If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:7).

Our hope is in heaven. Jesus promised, have faith in Me: “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). Paul tells us that if our hope is in this (earthly) life only, then we are of all men the most miserable. Our hope includes eternal life with God, Jesus, the angels, the saved of ages past and those we love. Our hope is in a life without pain, tears, death or decay.

Our hope is guaranteed by His resurrection. “Through Him you believe in God, Who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Pet. 1:21). Paul makes the point that if Jesus is raised, so will we; He, as the first fruits, then us. His sitting at the right hand of God in Glory solidifies our hope and guarantees our inheritance. If God kept His promises to His only begotten Son, He will reward us as joint heirs with Jesus, because He has promised.

Is the Christian hope ours? Have we responded to the good news of the Gospel? Have we been born again of water and spirit? Have we crucified the man of sin and been washed by his blood? Are we being cleansed moment-by-moment by walking in the light of his truth? Avail yourself of Christian peace, hope, and joy, today.

GOSPEL CHARIOT MISSIONS UPDATE January and February 2017

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all doing well. Things are really busy during January and February because it’s the time chariots start heading out after repairs and believe me, there are always some surprises and they all cost money! We as leaders can never overlook repairs because they will come back to bite you in all the wrong places and will cost you more to repair in the bush than back home. So we take our repairs very seriously.

We have had some sad and unexpected passing s. Firstly, Dimpo Motimele’s father passed away and just last week our own GCM granny, Lydia, who collected all our WBS mail and did grading and was responsible for sending packages to the US and Vicki in Australia.

CHAROITOn a brighter note, we are all doing well. Mike Knappier and Dimpo Motimele are up in Namibia where we have our mission point now with a short term school in process. We have just ordered another container of Bibles from China for East Africa and the Nigerian Chariot will be ready for export in a month’s time. Meaning we will have 13 chariots going into 19 countries and we have brethren pleading with us from all over Africa to help with chariots in their areas as well as they see what is happening on the continent. As they say “success breeds success” and it’s starting to snowball and it’s not us, it’s the Lord and the African brethren taking responsibility of evangelizing their own continent. I personally have always seen that and it’s now taking fire and we need to thank all you American supporters for backing this vision. Thank you, thank you to all.

To God be the Glory.

Do Non-Christians and Christians Stand on Equal Footing with God?

my sinsThe Bible seems pretty clear about this question. We can read for ourselves the answer. The real question is: Do we accept the answer? The world doesn’t see the difference at times. Sadly, there are some within the church who can’t tell the difference either.

Let me start with a scripture. Galatians 6:10 reads, “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Can we not see a subtle difference? We are to prefer one another. Why? Because our Savior sees a difference!

In Matthew 12:47-50, we read, “Then one said to Him, ‘Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.’ But He answered and said to the one who told Him, ‘Who is My mother and who are My brothers?’ And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, ‘Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.’” Jesus is plain, isn’t He? (By the way, Jesus shows here that there is no special veneration, adoration and/or preference given to His mother! She simply was the vehicle of God to bring Jesus, as the Savior, to mankind. She is not a ‘heavenly queen’! Not to be prayed to, she is not a “special” saint!) How about this one? “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21).

Back to the question that makes our title, Do none Christians and Christians stand on equal footing with God? Yes and no. Yes, if you are asking about the love of God. He loves all people (John 3:16). No, if you are speaking of salvation and being an eternal heir. The bottom line is this: If you can know you are saved (and you can know [1John 5:13]), then you can also know what saves or doesn’t save others. If not, how do you know whom to evangelize? The very act of sharing the gospel with someone is to admit you believe they need to hear it. When we can’t tell the difference between the world and Christians, we must be closer to the world than we would care to admit!

Am I putting myself in the position of God when I know that someone needs the gospel? How about the need to repent? To be baptized? No, because God has already told us about these things so that we may discern between those who are Christians and those who need to become Christians. If a person refuses to comply with God’s commands, are we to accept them as blood washed brothers and sisters in Christ? Are we to see them as something different than God sees them? Brethren, I hope we study and understand this subject as so much depends on it.   Chris Moore Clarendon church of Christ Clarendon, TX

CONSISTENTLY COMPLIANT

consistencyWe must be hearers of the Word, but we must also be doers of it. As nice as it is to know it we will do better in dealing with, for instance, anxiety, when we understand that there is a far richer benefit: “He who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:17). Yes, that’s a promise. If you live as God wants you to, then you will enjoy eternal life in His presence.

Who would you say is the most submissive and compliant person you’ve ever heard about? Jesus may not be the first name that came to your mind, but He is the correct answer. There was nothing passive or hesitant about him, but every moment of His life was lived in full obedience to God. Even when He faced the unimaginable prospect of arrest, torture, and crucifixion, He affirmed God’s will and submitted to it. Here is how obedient He was “He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death on the cross” (Philippians 2:8).

Jesus said: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (John 4:34). Again: “I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (5:30). Jesus is the ultimate model of obedience and submission to God’s will.

What that will is, of course, is the great question for many people. They seem to believe God has hidden it from them, and it’s up to them to go look under every leaf. The will of God for your life is spelled out in scripture. There is no magic formula; you won’t discover His will by placing your Bible under your pillow at night. But as you develop a consistent pattern of reading God’s Word and meditating on it, you will begin to sense the reality of God’s will at work in your life!

The answers to all of life’s questions will not just be contained in any verse. But you will find many specific directives to get you serving the Lord, and the specific answers will be revealed as you are consumed by the work of God rather than your own self-interests. The Bible will show you what to do; the question is, are you willing to do it? What do you think?
