CHRISTIAN COURTESY

Christian_Courtesy_ml

“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing” (1 Peter 3:8, 9).

Courtesy is normally extended only to those who are courteous to you. Business has long practiced being courteous to customers because it is profitable. The old line “the customer is always right” is still used by some businesses.

But Christian courtesy goes further than this! The Christian is to be courteous to brethren/sisters as well as to others. Peter encourages the Christian, in verse 9, to repay evil or an insult with blessing not because we want to, but because we are called to act in this fashion. In so doing we will inherit a blessing.

It is not always easy to be courteous. Sometimes we would like to do the unchristian thing and bust them in the mouth! However, the Lord did not respond in this way and the Christian should not, either. We are extremely patient with those who can do us a service, yet the same patience and courtesy should be extended to those who can do us no service at all. –  John McCourt, from a 1976 bulletin, Amarillo, Texas

William Lyon Phelps* said:  “This is the final test of a gentleman [and of course, also of a lady]:  his/her respect for those who can be of no possible service to him [or her]”.

* William Lyon Phelps (1865-1943):  critic, scholar and professor of literature

Welches’ Grapevine for the glory of God – Mission Cambodia News & Update Part 1 – June 2017

Greetings, dearest loved ones. We are extremely encouraged to be sharing with you the joy of ministry. Your prayers and partnership continues to have a major impact on us, the work and lives in Cambodia. Proclaiming Christ through the gospel story is our mission. We are grateful you are a part of the story and thankful for the relationships with which God has gifted us, for your faith and for your trust, demonstrated in the ways you assist us to impact those we are blessed to serve.

Praise & Thanksgiving…

Annual Physicals: We are thrilled to share that we received good reports from our doctor during our recent physicals. It’s a blessing to have a facility here in Phnom Penh where we can get our annual check -ups, vaccinations and general care. Every chance we get, let us praise the Lord for all He has done for us.

Singapore Bible Camp: Our visit to Singapore in April resulted in meeting some new folks and also being invited to their church camp. This year’s theme was “Moving Hearts —Molding Lives” and was held in Sepang, Malaysia. We were richly blessed to reunite with old friends and make new ones. It was a great time of fellowship and an opportunity to be challenged by God’s Word through our keynote speaker, Randy Harris. Furthermore, the event took place over Father’s Day so some special events were planned to honor the many fathers attending the camp. We were all encouraged and spiritually strengthened during our time together.

A MIRROR FOR THE SOUL

man-reflection

A mirror is probably one of the most honest things there is. It doesn’t lie. Every time one looks into a mirror there is an accurate reflection of exactly what one is. About the only way to make a mirror lie is to distort it. Even then, the reflection is not flattering.

James says looking into the Bible one can see self in his natural face. This means bare bones, nothing doctored up. An actor can be made up to appear very different than natural, but that becomes hypocrisy. The word hypocrite is an old word for an actor, one who pretends to be someone else. The Bible rips away the veneer of pretense and lays bare what we are in God’s view.

The Mirror of the Soul reveals the origin of the soul (Genesis 2:7). It equally tells us the great value of the soul (Matthew 16:26). The mirror God gives us also shows us our personal defects and shortcomings (Galatians 5:19-21; 2 Timothy 3:1-5). Most important of all it shows us the eternal destiny of the soul (Matthew 25:46).

The mirrors we use sometimes get smudged and dirty. Good housekeepers will clean them with diligence. A dirty mirror tends to blur our vision of what we actually look like. When clean, a better and accurate image is reflected. The word of God is ever clean and pure (Psalm 12:6). It never fails to show us what the Lord thinks of us.

James pictures one who, after seeing self in God’s mirror, instantly walks away and forgets what was seen. The tenses show that one takes a look (once) then instantly ignores it, and continues to avoid the mirror. The only one blessed is the honest person who sees self as God sees him, makes whatever corrections are needed, and does what God would have him do. Take a good look at yourself in the Bible. What do you see? What does God see?

“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer; he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:23-25).

The following reports are from some of the Faculty members of SABC:

It has been a great first semester at the Southern Africa Bible College and students are about to write the final exams. We are still continuing with God’s given responsibility to equip our students with the word of God so that they can go out and make a difference. We thank God for all our supporters of the College and especially the Memorial Church of Christ. May God continue to bless you as you serve Him. Please continue to pray for us so that we do not get weary of working in His vineyard and combating all the troubles we have to deal with.

God bless you all!

Chris Burke

There is a considerable positive impact by recent graduates and 3rd year students on the teaching in congregations in central and southern Johannesburg. They are well received and do credit to SABC.

Theo Rappard

During December last year, the College had its first formal external moderation of exit level assessments. The assessors were from the University of Johannesburg. Their feed-back was very valuable and resulted in the amendment of certain aspects of the College’s existing Quality Assurance procedures. The following are some of the comments made in the moderation report:

General Comments:

Thank you for inviting us to examine your exit level exams for your Higher Certificate, Diploma in Biblical Studies and BTh in Biblical Studies. We would like to commend the College on the solid foundations in Biblical Studies that their various modules offer students. For the Higher Certificate and Bachelors programs we have made comments on the existing modules and made some suggestions for how these modules might be improved going forward.

Teaching and Learning:

Overall courses lacked an engagement with the South African context and we would suggest that in future exam questions ask students to comment on how a particular concept or idea within the various modules could be related to an aspect of life in South Africa today. The module answers for the exam questions were all very thorough and well-articulated making it possible for marks to be fairly and consistently given. Markers could perhaps show more leniency in their marking particularly when students are making a valid point but which does not appear in the marking guide.

These comments have been most helpful. What was of particular encouragement was the overall reaction from the moderators that in a few areas our standard may be too high.

CHANGE YOUR THINKING – CHANGE YOUR LIFE

change-my-life“….to be made new in the attitude of your minds;” (Ephesians 4:23)

Psychologist William James said this many years ago: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” With these changes our thinking and emotions are influenced and the spiritual “heart” is effected and with this our reactions to our life experiences change.

Scripture talks about that in this way: “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). “As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects a man” (Proverbs 27:19). “For as he thinks within himself, so he is” (Proverbs 23:7 — NASB).

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever may be your circumstances, these previous statements are true in your life. It matters not, if you are Chairman of the Board, or low man on the totem pole, it makes no difference if you are a brilliant success or a colossal failure, it matters not if you dwell in the midst of abundance or in the depth of abject poverty. These three facts are equally true to every single one of us:

  1. As you think, so you are.
  2. Change your thinking and change your life.
  3. With God’s help, you can do both!

Your thinking can change! Your life can change! One of the most damaging, most devastating traps we can ever fall into, is to conclude, “Well, it’s been this way for so long, I guess this is the way it has to be.” “It’s too late to change now.”

These are lies of the devil! It does not have to be the way it is and it’s never too late to change! But if anything is going to change your life, the very first change will have to be in your thinking. The fact is, that your thinking can change. The Word of God says, “…put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds” (Ephesians 4:22b, 23).

That’s what happens in the new birth. By the power and persuasion of God’s Holy Spirit through His Word, our thinking is changed. Where there was doubt, there is faith. Where there was rejection, there is acceptance. Where there was unbelief, there is belief. Where there was enmity toward God, there is peace, commitment and love. The result is — “But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). This is our choice!

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” Change your thinking and change your life. Try it. You’ll see and be blessed

A significant breakthrough was achieved recently when the students went to a place called Verena in Mpumalanga. The town had been devastated by a bus accident which claimed the lives of twenty children from fourteen families.

Eddie Nkosi worked with his congregation in Daveyton and managed to contact the grieving families through the Mayor of Verena and Churches of Christ in that area.

The students supported the grieving families and Eddie Nkosi delivered the counselling message to the families. He and Churches of Christ raised R40,700 to give to those who had lost loved ones. As a consequence of this the Councillor of Verena, Mr. Msibi, made a piece of land available on which to erect a building.

Student Representative Body Southern Africa Bible College Evangelism Report

On the 11th of April 2017 the students went to Elandsfontein Church of Christ to help the saints with a door to door campaign. It was a great day to reach out to the people without any obstacles. We started working at Elandsfontein around 09:00am and we finished at 16:00pm. We worked with Brother Sipho Mabaso who is in charge of the evangelism ministry, with the help of Elandsfontein leadership. On behalf of the students, we would like to thank the faculty for giving us an opportunity to reach out to the lost souls and so fulfil the great commission.

On 27th April, a public holiday, the students, attended the Gospel meeting at the Meadowlands Church of Christ. It was a well-organized Gospel meeting for the students, for they did not encounter any great difficulties, because of the good preparation work. We left for Soweto at 07:00am and we started working around 09:00am, and finished at 13:00pm. They gave out shopping bags which have the name of the church, and numbers to call if one needs to contact the church. It was great to reach out again. Praises be to God. The leadership of Meadowlands Church of Christ gave R800 for petrol, R400 for each taxi.

FATHERS, WHAT IS YOUR LEGACY?

Logo_Legacy1Inheritance is important. Good fathers desire to leave something behind for their children (Prov. 13:22). Old Testament law even regulated the passing down of a father’s possessions (Deut. 21:15-17; Num. 27:8-11). As fathers, what sort of inheritance would we like to see our children get?

Material Possessions. There is nothing wrong with money, if possessed and used in godly ways. The Lord certainly wants us to provide for our families (1 Tim. 5:8). However, Paul also warned Timothy that the “love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Tim. 6:10), and Jesus tells us that we cannot serve two masters (Matt. 6:24). So while we certainly can be interested in providing a material inheritance for our children, we must also be aware that riches will grow wings (Prov. 23:5). Worldly possessions will rust, and are subject to the thievery of men (Matt. 6:20). A material inheritance can be good for our families, but isn’t there something better?

Eternal Possessions. While fathers cannot literally pass down eternal life to their children, they can certainly influence their children towards it! We can store up treasures in heaven (Matt. 6:20), and in so doing set the right example for our children. Fathers are tasked with the responsibility of bringing up their children in the training and admonition of the Lord (Eph. 6:4). In so doing, we can pass down to our children a legacy of faith that could last them for eternity!

Fathers, it is good to provide for our family’s physical wellbeing. But the greatest legacy you can leave your children is faith in God and a Christian example that will span the ages!

What follows is some news from South African Gospel Chariot Missions that we are so proud to help support. Please keep this effort in your thoughts and prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Hi Everyone,

Hope this finds you all doing well. A new report will be sent at the end of June. This is just a short email to let you know that great things are happening and things are getting better and better every year as we get more and more chariots with great leaders impacting the continent of Africa.

I have just got back from Kenya and now in South Africa cleaning up and doing some administration before heading off to Venda tomorrow.

1ZBrethren, it is amazing what I see and witness when I travel. You will never understand unless you travel the roads I travel and hear the stories I hear. It is amazing and soooooo encouraging. Kenya just blew me away as I went from village to village. Last year we built that chariot for them and now visiting and seeing and hearing what is happening is amazing and hard to explain.

We have used World Bible School as a tool for 25 years now and when I travel it looks and sounds like everyone is a World Bible School convert. Even my 5 key GCM leaders are WBS converts. It might look like I am trying to give World Bible School a punt here, ha ha, but what I am trying to say, is we are sowing the seed and being part of a continental revival and bringing souls to Jesus and helping Africans take Africa. This is huge and bigger than I ever could have imagined.

Z2

That said, we are still busy building the Nigerian Big Gospel Chariot in Nigeria and it should be completed later this year. We have had some delays, but that is Africa.

We cannot thank you all enough for helping us reach so many.

In Him

Love, Brother George Funk and the GCM team

THE VALUE OF BEING CHRISTIAN

christian_tommyMost of us realize the value of being an American and most of us enjoy the opportunities we have as Americans, wanting to spend our lives in some valuable undertaking, spend our time, our talents, energies, and abilities on some of those worthwhile endeavors. This is good, but actually, living for Jesus and being a Christian is where one can find the uttermost, meaningful existence. This is so, yet there are some who doubt the worthwhileness of this endeavor, especially if they witness inconsistencies in a Christian’s life.

Their doubts, however, do not negate certain realities that make being a Christian the greatest way to live. Mankind would give New Testament Christianity more serious consideration if they were constantly reminded of the meaningfulness and value of spending one’s life in this way. Jesus reminds us that men will know that we are his disciples, “If you love one another” (John 13:35). By the same token, He affirms that men would come to believe through seeing the unity and harmony within the Christian fellowship (John 17:21).

Just why should a person want to become a Christian? Certainly one need only look at the consequences of sin in the world to realize that we need deliverance from this presence. The Apostle Paul affirms that this happened through one person and one only: “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). In 2 Corinthians 5:21 we are reminded that God “made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Jesus offers eternal salvation to those who are willing to obey Him (Hebrews 5:8-9). Friends, there is no other antidote in the world that can provide this kind of deliverance from a most dreaded disease: sin that results in death (Romans 6:23). Just think, all the burden of guilt is removed from a person’s past life. He can be saved eternally one day.

In addition to the joy of release from sin and its consequences is the wonderful joy of spending one’s life as a child of God. “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children, now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory” (Romans 8:16-17). What better way for one to spend their life than living as a child of God and bearing glory to God through all that we do and say.

Dear reader, living for Jesus is the only way to live that brings with it any hope in the world to come. We buy insurance policies to protect loved ones in the event of our deaths. What sort of insurance do you have that will protect your soul for eternity? God has promised, and He’s faithful in His word, “I will remember their sins no more” (Hebrews 8:12).

In Philippians 2:25-30, the apostle Paul expressed the concerns and love that both he and the church in Philippi have for Epaphroditus, whom Paul calls “my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier” and how they were all concerned over a serious illness that Epaphroditus had dealt with in his work for Christ.

Many of you have heard that our sister in Christ Sharon Welch, whom we also help support as a fellow worker with her husband, Dennis, in Cambodia, has been diagnosed with Typhoid Fever. We too are concerned over her illness and want us all to pray for her recovery so that we can thankfully rejoice to God as the Philippians did when Epaphroditus recovered. Please keep Sharon and her family in your prayers. For the elders, Ken D

She feels really miserable, experiencing most of the typical symptoms. Prayers are welcome

What are the signs and symptoms of typhoid fever?

Persons with typhoid fever usually have a sustained fever as high as 103° to 104° F. They may also feel weak, or have stomach pains, headache, or loss of appetite. In some cases, patients have a rash of flat, rose-colored spots. The only way to know for sure if an illness is typhoid fever is to have samples tested for the presence of Salmonella Typhi.

WELCH 1On June 1st Sharon wrote us:

I love you guys and appreciate your prayers, love and encouragements. Furthermore, I am grateful Go d has blessed me with people like you. I continue with the treatment plan my doctor gave me last Friday. Sunday and Wednesday were pretty bad days. Monday and Tuesday were good, just weak. Thursday has been my best day since getting sick 3 weeks ago. My doctor wants to see me again Friday (today) if I still am not doing really well. This morning I experienced some of the same on-going symptoms but they seemed to be reduced. Therefore, I will wait and see my doctor for a scheduled appointment for Tuesday, June 6th. Generally, it has seemed as though every third day or so this disease flares back up and I have a rough, miserable day. However, I am grateful for the better days and prayerful I am over the hump. I continue to stay in bed, even on good days, and sleep, read and watch a bit of TV –I have barely been out of my bedroom since Friday. Thank you again.
