Our New Shepherds

We have an extra reason to be joyful this Lord’s Day. God has rewarded our search for additional elders with three good men who will be appointed today. Our new shepherds will be:

Ken Darnell

Charles Greenawalt

Larry Moore

2013 02 16 I Phone 002

These men will begin serving with our current elders:

Don Bryan

Claude Fletcher

Troy Futrell

Kenneth Thuleen

We need to be praying for all our elders as they labor together for the spiritual well-being of the Highland Lakes congregation!

“Obey your leaders, and submit to them; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you “ (Hebrews 13:17).

Will you follow through?

A basketball coach will instruct his team members: “Follow through on your free throws! Follow your shot!” These two commands and others with similar instruction, spring from a principle of athletics that says what you do after an action or decision to begin with. Following through in arm motion can affect the direction of a shot or pitch. Following a shot may help a player get an important rebound, etc.

Spiritually, the principle of following through is just as vital. God wants us to do something just as surely as we hear and commit to it. James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” And, God wants works that cooperate with our faith (James 2:19-26). So let us think of some practical ways this principle can be applied in all aspects of our lives, and let’s do that by asking some important questions:

 Will you follow through by confessing Jesus as your Lord everyday, by the life that you live? “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven (Matthew 10:32-33).

 Will you follow through by teaching someone the gospel that was taught to you and resulted in your salvation? “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes . . . “ (Romans 1:16).

 Will you follow through by paying the financial debts that you have accumulated and pledged to pay? Ecclesiastes 5:4-5: “When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it.”

 So will you follow through by giving back to God a rightful portion of that which He has so richly blessed you? “But just as you excel in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in your love for us — see that you also excel in the grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7).

 Will you follow through by preparing yourself to be able to answer anyone who asks you a reason of your hope? “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).

 Will you follow through by being a friend at all times and encourage your brothers and sisters? “A friend loves at all times” (Proverbs 17:17a). “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15).

 Will you follow through by praying to God regularly? “Pray continually” (1 Thess. 5:17).

 Will you follow through by being willing to die for God’s cause? “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Romans 2:10b).

Our 50th Anniversary Sunday

On March 30th, 1963 the Highland Lakes Church of Christ in Kingsland, Texas, received its legal charter from Llano County. On March 31st, 2013, we will be commemorating this fact with a 50th Anniversary Sunday celebration. The day will be devoted to worship and fellowship as we remember the victories of the past and look forward to the opportunities ahead! We are asking all current members to help us “spread the word” about this special Sunday. We especially want to make sure that former members and old friends of this congregation get an opportunity to come back and assemble with us that day. We would also love to see any old photographs of the congregation or church building from past years. Please start praying for the success of this effort and if you have any ideas you would like to share, please speak to Joe Winnett. More details will be shared as we approach the date, so keep watching and praying! — Joe

Change of Phone Numbers

Bob & Donna Feuerbacher are going to discontinue their house phone use. Beginning in February they will only use their cell phones; the numbers are in our directory.

On the Bulletin Board:

The American Cancer Society is looking for people who would be willing to use their personal vehicles to transport patients undergoing treatment to and from the Burnet/Llano County area. If you are able and willing to help with this, there is a flyer on the bulletin board about whom you need to contact. They appreciate help given.

Do What You Can

2013 02 060I Phone 011One of my favorite accounts in the gospels is in Mark 14 when Jesus is at Simon the leper’s house (v. 3-9). While there, Mary the sister of Lazarus and Martha, took a flask of very costly oil and anointed Jesus’ head with it (John 12:1-7). Some there, apparently led by Judas, were vey upset at the waste of the oil. But Jesus defended her noble actions, saying that she had done a good work for Him in that she was anointing His body for burial. He also said that wherever the gospel is preached, what she had done will be told as a memorial to her, obviously it has been time and time again over the ages.

But the words that stick most in my mind concerning the actions of Mary are when our Savior said, “She has done what she could” (Mark 13:8). In those six short words, volumes are said about the attitude of Mary in serving and honoring the Christ. In fact, it is interesting to note that what she didn’t do says just as much as what she did do. Notice for example:

She did not wait to be asked to do something.

What a great example to us! She found a way to do what she could. Too many brethren (sisters) don’t do anything for the Lord because they are never asked. Follow Mary’s example; find something to do and do it.

She didn’t make excuses about her limitations.

I’m sure there were a lot of things she did not have (ability, time, resources, etc.) to properly do for Jesus. But she didn’t dwell on that; she sought out something that she could do. You can do a lot with even a little. Sadly, there are Christians today who make excuses for not doing for the Lord.

She didn’t worry about criticism.

And she was criticized, but she did it anyway! Which is more important, the praise of the Lord or the approval of men? We spend too much time worrying about what others will think or say. To gain the approval of the Lord, do what you can and don’t worry about men.

She didn’t fret over the cost.

It was very costly, but that was unimportant as far as she was concerned Jesus was worth it. There are a lot of things that some people consider too valuable to give up for the Lord. But for a true follower, nothing is too big of a sacrifice for the One who was sacrificed for them.

Look at it this way:  Can you do it?  Then do what you can. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men”  (Colossians 3:23).

Making Room for Others

Cannon 02-11-12 022“The church would be great if it weren’t for all the people.”

“Leave the church and get closer to God.”

“Jesus, Yes, the church, No.”

I can understand where those who make such declarations are coming from. Or at least, I grasp what would evoke such statements.

Most often they originate from a moment of frustration. At times, after years of effort. These words are spoken out of angst and anguish. Out of the burden and desire to unreservedly worship and praise and serve a perfect God in our complete and total imperfection. These feelings and emotions are generated out of a belief that we make faith much more complicated than it was ever intended to be.

However, when we look intently to the paradigm of the Kingdom, we become actually aware that we need one another. We cannot be all that God intends for us to be without Kingdom relationships. Without Christian community. We are greatly impeded in our ability to live up to our potential as believers without journeying through life together. Without loving one another. Encouraging one another. Challenging one another. We cripple the communal design of the Gospel and Kingdom when we do not develop intentional Christ-following, Kingdom-centered relationships. Much of our journey of faith is based upon our own individual relationship with God. Our own willful choosing to be His people every moment. However, without Christian community we hobble our spiritual development and Kingdom impact.

What is needed is grace. Not only God’s grace to us, but His grace from us. God’s grace in us, freely given to others. Openly extended to others. We have to make room. To allow room. Each of us do. To make room in our hearts for others. The problem is that we are seldom aware of our own Pharisaical tendencies. Relationships are not always easy. But they are always healthy when they are focused upon Christ. And when focused upon the greater purpose of the Kingdom.

May we glorify God in our attitudes!

Visitation for the Master — 2013

Our visitation program has served us and the Lord well since its inception in 2007, and we desire to continue this ministry in 2013. A reorganization meeting is planned for this evening, following our worship service. Pizza will be served in the Fellowship Hall prior to an evaluative discussion of the program and suggestions for the new year. If you would like to be involved in this ministry, you could still add your name to the sign-up on the bulletin board in the back of the auditorium.

Key statistics for 2012 were: 47 different families or individuals were visited or contacted; a total of 90 personal, on-site visits were made; 16 telephone contacts and 45 mailings occurred; and, 13 of our family units were involved in this very special ministry. How did we do in 2012? How about you in 2013?

VISITING FOR THE MASTER VISITATION PROGRAM

Team #1 (leaders: Teri & Joe Winnett) will meet on Sunday, January 20th, (today) after the evening worship service in connection with the reorganization meeting.

With Sympathy

Our sister in the Lord, Carmen Taylor, passed away early Monday morning, January 14th, after a long battle with various health problems. Funeral services took place on Friday at the church building, Joe Winnett and Tim Denton officiated.

Our heartfelt love and prayers go out to Herman, Sheri Wills, her sister Joyce Taylor, and to all in the family and to their friends. May every one find strength and comfort in our Heavenly Father and His care.

Thank You

I want to thank all the ladies who have always been willing to bake cakes for the birthday party this past year. Also, to Phil Parmer, Brenda Miller and Hilda Whitson for their help in setting up and serving. And thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped with the hair day, when we were short-handed. We could not carry on this ministry without your help! It makes it so much easier, when everyone is willing to do their part. I appreciate all of you! Thanks so much. In Christian love, Pat

Food Pantry Needs!

The Food Pantry can always use peanut butter, that good source of protein. If you can help, your contribution is at all times welcome and appreciated.

Ladies Corner

This coming Wednesday, January 23rd, after Bible class, the ladies will have a “Soup Luncheon”. The purpose of that is to have a special time to decide on class projects. Everyone bring your favorite soup! It will be a good time to make a decision about how we can serve others, in a special way and in the name of the Lord.

Preventive Maintenance

imagesCARUN5KZA young man had gotten a car. It was a 1972 four door Fiat. It did not go faster than 45 mph and it was not much to look at, but it was a car. One day, the young man’s uncle came and said, “We are taking your car to a garage.” The young man protested, “There is nothing wrong with my car, why take it to a garage?” The uncle explained that the car needed an oil change, tune up, checking the wear on the tire threads, checking belts and hoses etc., etc., and that these check-ups can save one from severe motor vehicle breakdowns. Yes, the uncle said that this was called “preventive maintenance”. In other words, by servicing the car before it had problems one can prevent certain problems from developing.

This “preventive maintenance” ideology actually works in all areas of life. If we plan ahead and prepare, we can save ourselves a lot of trouble later. It organizes one’s life and helps it to run more smoothly, and even when unexpected things arise, one can much more easily adjust and re-adjust. Have you ever seen those shows on TV, where experts show the viewers how to organize and streamline their lives? How to schedule and plan ahead and be prepared for those little breakdowns that always occur in life? A very good incentive for us to follow those instructions and to make life a bit smoother! Calendars and order help to manage our lives a lot better.

But the best place to apply this “preventive maintenance” ideal is in our relationship with God. There is one important aspect in our spiritual life: the Bible tells us that Jesus will return one day to claim those who have been faithful to Him. The Bible tells us to watch and pray for the coming of the Lord. If we wait till He comes to begin to prepare, then we will have waited too late. We should be in preparation now! The Lord may return at any time. Therefore we should get our lives in order! As we live each day we should prepare to meet God by putting aside the habits and thoughts that are displeasing to God.

Our preventative maintenance is to change ourselves to be more like God, in doing so we will begin to look forward to the return of Christ. What a glorious day this will be for those who are prepared! “Be diligent in these matters, give yourself wholly to them so that everyone may see your progress” (1 Timothy 4:15).
