A NATION UNDER GOD?

2013 03 07 IPhone 030We have heard it over and over, but have we heard it? “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). If we have heard it, do we believe it?

Historians tend to confirm the assessment of General Douglas MacArthur, “History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. There has either been a spiritual awakening to overcome the moral laps, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster.”

Sin is a nation’s shame, and that applies to us. Pick up today’s paper and read all about it: lying, business dishonesty, pleasure-seeking, murder, rape, fraud, drunkenness, abortion, drug addiction, robbery, lust, selfishness, greed, homosexuality, pornography, gambling, and such like. These things cannot be ignored. As Peter Marshall once said, “By our tolerance of some wrongs, we have come close to being intolerant of the right.” Marshall also declared that we desperately need to be bold enough to confront the face of evil and wrong, “even when it bears our own image.” It’s a law. “Sow to the wind and reap the whirlwind!”

Mark it down. Our respect, or disrespect, for the laws of God will determine the future of the United States of America.

George Washington, in his Farewell Address spoke rightly when he said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are an indispensable support. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness — these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.” He went on to say, “both reason and experience forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

I can strengthen this nation, and so can you. How? By keeping God’s commandments and doing His will. – John Gipson, Windsong church of Christ

JESUS DOES NOT ANSWER

“Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘Yes, it is as you say,’ Jesus replied. When He was accused by the chief priests and the elders, He gave no answer. Then Pilate asked Him, ‘Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?’ But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge — to the great amazement of the governor” (Matthew 27:11-14).

Pilate is amazed. He is dumbfounded. His gears are seriously jamming. Jesus won’t defend Himself against His accusers. He answers Pilate when he asks, “Are you the king of the Jews?” But He won’t answer those who oppose Him. And Pilate doesn’t get it! He can’t fathom why in the world Jesus doesn’t answer them. But that’s precisely why: Because His kingdom is not of this world. And so He refuses to answer.

Jesus doesn’t answer because He is in complete control. Of Himself. Of the situation. It may seem as if things are spiraling out of control, but they are far from it. God is sovereign. Jesus doesn’t answer because “as a sheep before his shearers is silent He did not open His mouth” (Isaiah 53:7). Jesus is fulfilling the plan of God, the purposes of God, in every way. And He knows it. Through His actions He is fulfilling prophecy. Intentionally. Jesus doesn’t answer because His critics wouldn’t listen even if He did. Would it change their minds? Their hearts? No. And so He doesn’t answer.

Another crucial reason that we may see in this is, Jesus doesn’t answer because He knows who He is as He stands before the Father. He is complete, He is whole. He is without blemish. Without defect. Without fault. And ultimately, it matters not what the critics think of Him; of whom they believe Him to be. What matters is that He fulfills the will of the Father in His life. Beyond that, does anything else really matter?

What we are in the Father’s eyes matters more than everything else. When it is all said and done, that is what really matters. — borrowed

TRUE FORGIVENESS

Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Luke 17:3-4, “Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent’ you shall forgive him.”

Often people will quote the first set of passages and thus conclude that forgiveness must be extended in a “blank check” fashion. The Lord is stating that you must forgive sin or trespass from others if you expect God to do the same for you. Question: Does God forgive you without you repenting and asking for forgiveness? No, He doesn’t! {Another question: Were the ones who were instrumental in killing Jesus automatically forgiven, when He said: “Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34)? Or did not Peter have to tell them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven” (Acts 2:38).}

The second passage from Luke, tells us how forgiveness is obtained. There must be a cessation of the sin and a request for forgiveness; it’s the same with God. Now, we do have the responsibility of trying to facilitate an opportunity for this to happen. Matthew 18:15 tells us we must go to our brother if he has sinned against us. Galatians 6:1-2 tells us, if we are spiritual, to restore a brother gently if he has sinned. We should, as God is, always be willing and ready to forgive. The problem is that some folks aren’t worried about forgiveness and/or don’t seek it. They don’t want to stop the sins they are involved in and aren’t too concerned about forgiveness. Forgiveness is a precious commodity in that Jesus Christ died so that we all might have it. All won’t have it because they are not willing to accept the terms Jesus put on it. Hebrews 5:9 tells us He is the “Author of eternal salvation.” He has the right to put the terms on the receiving of forgiveness.

That does put a duty upon those who have been sinned against. You want to forgive, and often you will have to make it happen by going to that person. If the person comes to you first, wonderful! If not, we are to go to them. If they won’t respond, your hands are clean. Also, we never “write” that person off. It may be in the future that they have a change of heart. This is how God feels about us. Acts 17:30 tells us that God wants all men to repent. Why? So He can forgive them! I hope you will think about this subject. — Christ Moore, Clarendon church of Christ, Clarendon, TX

LOOKING TO IMPROVE

It is hard to look at the mirror without looking at yourself. We want to know how we look and if everything is in place or not. If something is wrong, it gives us a chance to fix it. It’s a chance to restore our appearance. That is why James’ analogy about looking in the mirror is so wonderful. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like” (James 1:23, 24).

This verse makes us think of the dangers of missed opportunities. Just as a look in the mirror gives us a chance to fix what is wrong with our appearance, a lesson from God’s word that is merely listened to and not allowed to take root in our hearts will soon be forgotten. It will never have a chance to grow and have an influence on our lives. We won’t get the chance to “touch up” that problem, and we won’t get the chance to “restore” our spiritual reflection. We missed it, and we have no guarantee of getting it back. James continues “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing” (James 1:25).

God’s word brings us freedom from sin. Upon our obedience to the Gospel, He fixed us, He gives us new life, and if we do and not just hear, we receive great blessings. The blessings come from doing. We are better when we serve, when we reach out, and when we step out in faith. We are better when we put God’s words in action. When we start living like that, we truly reflect Jesus. When we reflect Jesus, we have never looked better!

Faith and Affirmation

2013 02 16 I Phone 005“The tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21).

Nathaniel Hawthorn came home from his job at a custom house (a place housing the offices that process legal paper work) devastated that he had just been let go. When he broke the news to his wife, however, she responded with joy! “Now you can write your book!” she said. Puzzled, he asked, “And what shall we live on while I’m writing it?” Mrs. Hawthorn walked over to a drawer in the kitchen, slowly reached inside, and then retrieved a stack of money she had been saving unbeknownst to him. “I always knew you were a man of genius. And that you’d one day write your masterpiece.” And because of the faith and affirming words of Mrs. Hawthorne toward her husband, every library in the world has a copy of The Scarlett Letter.

Faith and affirmation. Do we realize how much power God has given us? Do we realize that we have the ability to turn the tide in someone’s life through faith and affirming words? Not solely faith in God (certainly that’s where it begins as God works in our hearts) but by placing faith in others. By telling them, showing them, that we believe in them. By affirming to them that you believe they can accomplish great things.

Isn’t that what God has done for us through Jesus? “I believe in you,” the Gospel declares to each of us. So, do we speak a word of hope into the lives of others? Do we demonstrate faith in others the way we speak to them and affirm them in such a way, that they begin to believe that God has something more in store for their lives than what they presently see?

James, the brother of Jesus, affirms to us, “Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do” (James 2:18). Later on he confronts us, “With the tongue we praise the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men…my brothers, this should not be” (James 3:9-10). With our words we build up. With our words we tear down. With our actions the Kingdom is furthered. And with our actions the Kingdom is hemmed in, even destroyed.

“The tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21).

All of us have this power of life and death . . .  ~~ borrowed & adapted
