CAN YOU PREACH WHAT YOU PRACTICE?

All my life I have heard the expression, “Practice what you preach!” It’s something that we are told from a young age to teach us the importance of “walking the walk”. This saying teaches us to look at ourselves and make sure that we are doing those things that we are telling others they need to do. But what if we looked at this a little differently? What if I asked, “Can I preach what you practice?” Are there things in your life or mine that others could or could not preach about?

If someone where to follow us all day long, would they be able to preach about the things we practice? It’s a sobering thought when you stop and contemplate it. My life should be so in line with the scriptures that I should be able to say as Paul did, “Imitate me, as I imitate Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). But the truth of the matter is that, if we all are honest with ourselves, we all have things that we know we need to do differently in our lives.

For example, we all know that studying the Bible is very important for the Christian (Deuteronomy 6:6-9), but many of us don’t read it, let alone study it, as often as we should. So if someone were to follow us and see that, would we want them to preach that? Absolutely not! We would want them to encourage others to do personal studies and to encourage them to be in God’s Word daily. What about the way we talk? Would we be ok with others encouraging people to talk like us? If I am someone who is a liar or someone who uses profanity, or says discouraging things, would I want that to be what is preached about me? Certainly not! Therefore I need to be constantly aware of my actions and realize that others are watching me and will emulate the things I do. This should cause us to stop and take a look at our lives and do some serious self-evaluation. Think about it; if we were going to be on a TV show where there were cameras around all the time, wouldn’t we be on our best behavior? Well, brothers and sisters, we need to be reminded that God sees all that we do. “And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to Whom we must give an account” (Hebrews 4:13).

Even though others can’t see what we do 24/7 doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t live my life as a continual example. So, live your life in a way that I can preach what you practice!  Tim Campbell, Commerce church of Christ, Commerce, TX

WHEN DOING GOOD FEELS THE BEST

I am a firm believer that helping others makes us feel better about ourselves. I also believe that when we apply certain principles to our service to others, we can grow spiritually. too. For instance, when we do something in private, when nobody else knows, it then becomes a matter between us, the person we help, and God. Jesus taught that this was the right way to do it (Matthew 6:3). It keeps our motives pure, and we get to personally see God working through us. Our deed then turns into a faith builder for us. Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan gives us some more thoughts on this. Just as the Samaritan redefined who our neighbors are, I believe that it is a good thing when we step out of our comfort zone and help someone who is not in our normal social circle.

2013 07 24 Iphone 014Sometimes we need to heed Jesus’ lesson and show mercy where it is least expected (Luke 10:37). I also believe that the parable shows us the blessings of sacrificing when we help others. It is a good thing when we can help out with just a drink or a small amount of food, but don’t you feel better when you dig deeper, sacrifice a little more, and step out in faith when you help others? Isn’t that what Jesus meant when He said, “…to give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap” (Luke 6:38). Paul wrote that giving “out of their poverty” helped the churches of Macedonia grow in their faith and grow in grace (2 Corinthians 8:1-5).

I am not trying to downplay any act of kindness we may bestow on others; I just believe there are times when we can use our service as a way to build a stronger faith within us. – Donnie Carnathan, West Erwin church of Christ, Tyler, TX

THOUGHTS FOR THOUGHT: PRIORITIES

In Matthew 6:19-24 Jesus gives his followers a test to evaluate their priorities. This is the way the test goes:  wherever your treasure is, there your heart will be. It’s a test. Do you want to know whom you are serving? Do you want to know what you’re invested in? Then look where you put your time. Where do you put your money? That’s who your master is.

Richard J. Foster, in his book Celebration of Discipline, lists ten biblical principles for living out inward simplicity. He cautions becoming legalistic with these principles.

1. Buy things for their usefulness and not their status.

2. Reject anything that is producing an addiction in you.

3. Develop a habit of giving things away.

4. Refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry.

5. Learn to enjoy things without owning them.

6. Develop a deeper appreciation for the creation.

7. Look with a healthy skepticism at all “buy now”, “pay later” schemes.

8. Obey Jesus’ instruction about plain, honest speech.

9. Reject anything that breeds the oppression of others.

10. Shun anything that distracts you from seeking first the kingdom of God.

Final thought:  what is the time and investment you have in stuff compared to how much time and investment you have in relationships with God and others? I think that’s a thought worthy of more thought. — Ken Darnell

WRITER SURVEYS FUTURE CHURCH

In January 1985, the following article appeared in the CHRISTIAN CHRONICLE in the column, “Trends”.

Editor’s Note: The Chronicle staff asked Mac Lynn, Harding Graduate School of Religion professor, to look at trends in churches for our readers. Lynn is director of the Institute for Church Growth and Planting and speaks widely on church growth. He speaks plainly here about some challenges the church needs to face.

“If present trends continue, the church will mirror society among which she lives. Reaction against the “new morality” will be forthcoming, but society will counter much of the effort. Large suburban churches will grow larger as older city churches will continue to decline. Southern rural churches will grow older, remain fairly conservative, and many will die.

Unless something extraordinary comes along, the churches will grow more concerned about comfortable surroundings for worship and socialization than about evangelism.

New methods of evangelism will aim at socialization or benevolence, but they are not likely to include personal encounter necessary to accomplish the hoped-for goal of conversion.

Some congregations will give renewed consideration to their outreach mission and to the personal needs of the membership. These will no longer be tied to the concept that church is a ritual and that “what you get out of it is what you put into it.

Some churches will give new meaning to the idea of being simply “the church”.

While a sense of concern for the youth among us will continue, I believe one of our biggest casualties in the future will be in this area. As children commonly walk in the ways of their parents, the young people of the church will walk in the ways of their “spiritual” parents. As the church grows more like the world, so will the youth. Declining evangelistic activity among today’s adults will lead to even less among the new adults.

Finally, driven for independence, self-determination, and self-centered interests will keep many, maybe even most churches from growing. Fear of women’s takeover, fear of change, fear of not getting one’s way will continue to frustrate many believers, will drive others into indifference, and will finally lead to spiritual stagnation for many congregations.

The Challenge of the Future

There needs to be a way to turn the moods of the present society into a positive platform for launching a new spiritual revolution. Churches, schools, journals, families, and individuals share the responsibility.

Perhaps what is needed in our time is schools which will train students to minister to today’s world, periodicals which will encourage such efforts, and churches which will make full use of these people.

We need schools which will equip business students in the avocation of ministry as they train them in the vocation of business, papers which will cultivate the atmosphere for such training, and churches which will utilize the skills of these people. We need schools which have as strong a vision for mission as they have for professional studies, Christian writers who will write about ways to use this world’s offerings to evangelize as they write about issues, and churches which are as concerned about the lost as they are about their own comfort or soundness.” — MAC LYNN

And now, about 30 years later, where do we stand???

TWO DIFFERENT VIEWS

An Atheist’s View of Life

Read All the Way to the Bottom, Then Back Up

I will live my life according to these beliefs:

God does not exist

It is just foolish to think

That there is a God with a cosmic plan

That an all-powerful God brings purpose

to the pain and suffering in the world

Is a comforting thought, however

Is only wishful thinking

People can do as they please without eternal consequences

The idea that

I am deserving of Hell

Because of sin

Is a lie meant to make me a slave to those in power

The more you have, the happier you will be

Our existence has no grand meaning or purpose

In a world with no God

There is freedom to be who I want to be

But with God

Everything is fine

It is ridiculous to think

I am lost and in need of saving
