BORING CHRISTIANITY?

reading-bible_2316_1024x805I can remember one timed when I was a boy; I made the mistake of stating to my mother that I was bored. The next thing I knew I was doing chores, carrying firewood, cleaning, and anything else my mother could think of on our small three and a half acre farm. I learned two important lessons that day: first, if you are bored don’t broadcast it, and second, if I am bored it probably means I am not doing anything.

Often I hear that church is boring, the worship service is boring, and the preaching is boring. Sometimes people do not state it with words, they show it with their feet, they do not show up for church services, and are uninvolved with the life of the church. My guess is that if one is saying that Christianity is boring they are either watching a Christian who is lukewarm, and is nominal in his/her faith or the person stating such is a lukewarm, nominal Christian. Nominal Christianity is boring.

As I think about my 20-plus years of ministry and the six years of my Christian life before I became a preacher, it has been anything but boring. I have preached in several states, two foreign countries, met many wonderful Christians, and have served the Lord in the inner city, in rural areas and in a third world country. I have been in hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, orphans homes, and have been on several mission trips. I have not experienced boring Christianity.

The book of Acts gives the history of the church and it is not boring. Christians worshiped together, prayed for each other, helped those who were needy (Acts 2:41-47), fed the hungry (Acts 6:1-6), went on mission trips (Acts 13:1-4), and they made a difference in the world for the cause of Christ by converting the lost and helping Christians on their journey to Heaven. Christianity as described in the New Testament is anything but boring.

The story is told of a young woman who was once given a book to read. She tried reading it and found it to be quite dull and boring. Later, she fell in love with a young man who was a writer. In a conversation with him, she found out that he was the author of that book. She could then hardly wait to get to her room so that she might read it again. This time she found it to be a very interesting and fascinating book. What was the difference? She knew and loved the author!

Some think the Bible is dull and dry. But if they would read it with the idea in mind that here is a book written by their God and Creator, they would find it to be a challenging message. They need to come to love God. When they do, they will find His book and the life it calls us to live to be both interesting and meaningful. Think about it!  – Mark T. WE STILL PLAY IN THE RAIN

thThere was a commercial from an insurance company that showed people playing in the rain. There was especially a little girl who was talking. She said, “Every second somewhere in the world lightning strikes, but we still play in the rain.” The point of this commercial, even though there are scary things in the world: we still have to enjoy it! We still have to take the chances that make life worth living!

I wonder if we shouldn’t apply the message of this commercial to our lives. There are dangers associated with being the type of person God would have us to be, but the risks are worth the joy we can receive. For instance, there is great danger in reaching out to others with the Gospel. People may reject you and mock your beliefs. They may start avoiding you and relationships may become distant. Some may even destroy your faith just to justify their own bad behavior. On the other hand, sharing Christ’s message of hope is the only way for you to ever experience the joy of having a part in someone’s salvation. The rain drops of persecution, stress, and rejection should not stop us from playing in the rain of evangelism.

Likewise, only by opening up and trusting one another as brothers and sisters can we ever truly gain the understanding of others and the rewards of fellowship as God intended. However, doing this means allowing for the possibility that someone may get close enough to actually hurt you. You may share things that become fodder for gossips. You may grow close to someone only to have them betray you in some way. Someone may reveal something about themselves that shatters your image of them. As Christians, we have to understand that this risk is truly worth the gift that God gives us in our relationships.

Other examples could be given, but I think you get the point. The Christian life is one of calculated risks. Taking those risks might mean being hurt in one way or another. Not taking those risks mans you can never truly gain all the benefits God offers to His people. Every second, lightning strikes somewhere in the world, but don’t forget to play in the rain! – Walter Rayburn, Owl Hollow church of Christ, Winchester, TN

THE IMOGOH AND WHEELERS ARE COMING!

Sandra & Sylvester Imogoh will be with us from Saturday, July 11th through Sunday, July 12th. Monday, July 13th, they will continue on to Houston. Dough & Diane Wheeler will be with them as they travel.

Henry & Mary Kattner will house and feed the Imogohs both days. The Wheelers will stay at Dollene Pearson’s house and the Millers will take care of the meals. Thank you for taking care of our visiting missionaries!

Remember that on that Sunday, July 12th, we will have our Fellowship Meal at noon. After that, we will have a short devotional and there will be no evening worship service.

The Imogohs’ visit is a very rare one and it took a long time to be accomplished. Who knows if it will ever happen again? Therefore let us make a special effort on that Sunday to show our support and interest for their work by an excellent attendance. It will strengthen and encourage them in their work that takes place under very difficult circumstances. But not only will they be blessed, but we, too, will be uplifted and blessed.

GOD’S DESIRE TO BLESS ALL MEN

god-blessPsalm 67 is a beautiful passage concerning God’s relationship with man. The chapter reads as follows:

“God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine upon us; may Your ways be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. May the peoples praise You, O God, may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples justly and guide the nations of the earth. May the people praise You, O God; may all the people praise You. Then the land will yield its harvest, and God, our God, will bless. God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear Him.”

God loves us and desires to bless us with joy, peace, mercy salvation, daily care, and an eternal home with Him in heaven. He asks us to allow Him to govern us, through obedience to His Word. He asks that His way and His will be the basis of our walk in life and He will bless us. He will righteously judge us.

God promises that the earth, the land, will yield the things we need to sustain our life. He asks that we honor, praise, worship, fear, and respect Him.

As we study God’s inspired Word, we can learn how to address every question in life. Why are we here? What is our purpose? Where are we going? God has a plan for every person in every nation. He wants us to submit to Him. He then will bless us.

Man needs God’s blessings today. God’s way will eliminate many of our massive problems that plague the world today. We can let God govern and bless us. He allows us to make the choice to believe and obey Him or to reject Him. We reap the consequences of our decisions.

“Do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please the sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” — Galatians 6:7-8.

IS GOD TOLERANT?

Tolerance_et_Intolerance_275x207I was asked this week to comment on the following three points: 1) God is Intolerant. 2) Tolerance is not a Christian attribute. 3) Tolerance is apathy dressed up to look like compassion.

John’s illustration speaks for itself: “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). God and sin do not mix. Not only does He not participate in sin, but those whose settled life practice is sin cannot have a life-giving relationship with Him (“If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth — 1 John 1:6). This is a reflection of God’s holiness. The Old Testament would describe God as, “You Who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong” (Habakkuk 1:13).

Yet God does not rampage against the one lost in sin: there is no hint of brutality or standoffishness with Him. All the while that the integrity of God’s holiness is maintained, He is ever-welcoming and always inviting humanity into His arms. He is the Father, looking for His lost son. He is the shepherd, seeking lost sheep. Somehow He manages both merciful and just — at the same time — without contradicting His own nature. The Bible speaks to this in Romans 3:23 where God is called “just and justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” That He is “just” speaks to His sense of justice — that our sin cannot be tossed aside without another thought, that it can’t simply be swept under the rug (that would surely be a sign of a corrupt judge!). Yet He is also “the justifier”, the one who makes the faithful to be acquitted of the charges against us as those charges are found punished in the person of Jesus Christ.

God has moved heaven and earth to bridge the gap (sin) that separates Him from mankind. In that way, one could rightly say that God does not tolerate sin and will do any and everything to see it destroyed even if that means destroying it in the sacrifice of innocent Jesus at the cross.

God works through events and processes. Salvation is not only a one-time event (justification), but also a process (sanctification — the process of being made holy). He has saved me and He is saving me.as a refiner sits over a fire and watches the impurities burn out of his precious metal, so God is said to put His people “into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’ and they will say ‘Jehovah is my God’” (Zechariah 13:9).

This refining process takes great patience, forbearance, longsuffering, and loyal love (by the way, all of those are biblical descriptions of God). So while the term “tolerance” is not found in the Bible, many of its synonyms are. In the noblest sense(s) of the idea: Yes, God is tolerant as He waits for our repentance. (and the world’s) and slowly refines us in the fire.  – Levi Sizemore, 37th Street church of Christ, Snyder, TX
