THE COMING DISASTER

TDISASTER-AREAhe internet buzzes with sensational predictions of looming disaster. Titles read, “Collapse of the Dollar,” “Food Shortages Ahead,” “Polar Icecaps Melting,” Hyperinflation on the Horizon,” “Terrorism on the Rise” and so on. YouTube especially has numerous videos telling how to prepare for the imminent and abrupt end to life as we know it in America.

Could such prophecies of doom come about? Well, yes.

Ponder these questions. Are there any Divine guarantees that these things cannot happen? Have such catastrophes occurred in the past? Has money, education and government ever rescued a culture such as ours from bleak tomorrows?

You are as aware of the correct answer to these questions as anyone. There are no promises for the future.

Oh, it would be safe to say however that while there are no guarantees, there are possibilities. The chance of hyperinflation is probably greater than, say, a gigantic meteor striking the earth. I admit to personally having a greater concern that the stock market will crash than that global warming is going to decimate the earth.

In Luke 13:1, Jesus was given a news report about some fellow Galileans of their day who apparently incurred the wrath of Pilate’s soldiers who fell upon them with swords and mixed their blood with the blood of their own sacrifices. The aim of this report was probably the same as similar examples of “bad” news today: they are given to stir fear.

However, Jesus’ response was quite different. He did not deny the fact that such tragedies might befall anyone. He did not urge His audience to prepare themselves physically for whatever the report might mean for them in the future. He did not tell them to begin stockpiling food and water. He did not tell them to arm themselves or invest in gold.

What Jesus said to His audience, I imagine, was done in a non-excited, matter-of-fact fashion. He said about possible disasters, “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3).

Jesus was not a fear monger. He did not teach for sensational aims. He was simply providing all men with an understanding of what is REALLY important. He was telling us of preparation that REALLY matters.

My friends, unless one turns from sin, disaster is inevitable. The greatest threat to anyone’s future is his own unrighteousness. – Floyd Kaiser Southwest church of Christ Ada, OK

I Corinthians 3: 7 “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

What follows is a short message from Comfort Mafunda, the young man that our congregation helps support in his studies at the South Africa Bible College.

I greet you all brothers and sister in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

By God’s grace I passed all my modules and I’m looking forward for my second year. Thank you for helping the college. Your contributions are not in vain we are gaining knowledge so that we can help the Kingdom of God to grow. During the December I baptized one person in a congregation in the Eastern Cape to where I usually go and help in preaching the gospel. This year as I’m doing my second year I’m working with the congregation that is in the nearby Nursing College. So things are good there but the problem is that most of those students are not in the church so it’s our duty to find a way in helping them see the light. I really need your prayers that God may help me to be able to discipline myself so that I can manage to balance my college work and preaching the Good News. I hope one day I’ll meet you even if not in this life but in the life to come. Peace be with you. Yours in Christ, Comfort Mafunda

What a blessing to be allowed by God to be a fellow worker in growth of His kingdom. Continue to keep our brother Comfort in your prayers and that the Lord can continue to use us all, as fellow workers, to His glory. For the elders, Ken D

ATTITUDE

AttitudeIsEverythingAttitude has so much to do with living the Christian life. A negative attitude will cause one to be overly critical and to see only the dark side of life. Such a perspective can be very depressing. When we see only the bad, we cease to experience the joys of being a Christian.

Our focus should be on the positive. Just look around. See our wonderful world as it was created by God. The sunrise, the majestic mountains, the rivers and oceans, the beautiful flowers, and trees, and all the magnificent wonders of the world were given to us by God to enjoy. What a great love God has for mankind! We are such a blessed people. How can we help but be happy?

The positive Christian has hope burning like a flame in his heart. He has learned from God’s word about His love for His children and he knows the great price God paid for all of us, not just for His children, but for all the souls of the whole world.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Knowing such a price was paid for us, we cannot help but be joyful and confident that, if we remain faithful, we will receive that crown of life that has been promised (Revelation 2:10).

Another of the beauties and joys of this life is the Christian home. A truly Christian home is one with loving, godly parents who are working together to bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Such a home has members who desire to spend eternity together in heaven. To achieve this marvelous goal, this family spends time studying together in order to be familiar with God’s road map to heaven.

Yes, attitude can make the difference between being saved or being lost. We are the light of the world, a city set on a hill (Matthew 5:14). Let’s be sure the world knows that we are happy to be Christians! – Dale Grissom, Northridge church of Christ Dayton, OH

News from the Cherokee Home for Children

Hello friends! We are back at it again. Sorry it has taken a month for me to get going, but the first of the year always brings its own excitement and challenges! I want to send things to you that are beneficial and useful to you and your mission efforts. Thank you all for the ways you support Cherokee Home for Children. – Kaci Duggan Morrison, Administrative Assistant

The Cherokee Lady Indians advanced to the Area Playoffs and lost by only 1 point. Seven of the girls on the team are from CHC—Sophia, Kaitlyn, Tori, Alexis, Emmy , and Crista. Tori was named Offensive MVP and Sophia was given 1st Team honors. The Cherokee Indians advanced to the playoffs and put in a good effort but came up short. Carter and Kohlton are CHC boys, and they were major players on the team.

A generous friend of Cherokee Home is providing resources for our children to learn to play the piano. Five of our kids were involved in a piano recital where they performed before friends and family . We are proud of Kylie, Jenny, Sophia, Kaitlyn, and Carter and the hours they have put into acquiring this beauti ful skill.

The celebration of the 50th Super Bowl at the Cherokee Home started out with a beautiful worship service with lots of singing. Everyone enjoyed watching football on a life-size screen as the best! During the game we had a feast of fried chicken tenders, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and snacks galore.

Note from Delton McGuire:

“With a mixture of joy and a sigh of relief my responsibilities changed again today at Cherokee Home for Children. Five years ago I moved into the ED role at the tragic death of the former director. This was after seven years as the chief development officer. I am again the Director of Development. I’ve gone from three jobs earlier today, non-profit administration, program, and funding, to just one, fundraising. And that has always been my favorite. And now I might get to spend a little more time with my four grandchildren.”

Continue to pray for and seek ways to bless these children, for this is “religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father”. For the elders, Ken D

AN HONEST HEART

heart-of-loveA person stands before judge and jury, places one hand on the Bible and the other in the air, and makes a pledge. For the next few minutes, with God as his/her helper, they will “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

They are a witnesses. Their job is not to expand upon nor dilute the truth. Their job is to tell the truth. Leave it to the legal counsel to interpret. Leave it to the jury to resolve. Leave it to the judge to apply. But the witnesses? The witnesses speak the truth. Let them do or less and they taint the outcome. But let them do that – let them tell the truth – and justice has a chance.

The Christian, too, is a witness. We, too, make a pledge. Like the witness in court, we are called to tell the truth. The bench may be absent and the judge unseen, but the Bible is present, the watching world is the jury, and we are the primary witnesses. We are subpoenaed by no less than Jesus himself: “You will be my witnesses – in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world” (Acts 1:8).

We are witnesses. And like witnesses in a court, we are called to testify, to tell what we have seen and heard. And we are to speak truthfully. Out task is not to whitewash nor bloat the truth. Our task is to tell the truth. Period.

There is, however, one difference between the witness in court and the witness for Christ. The witness in court eventually steps down from the witness chair, but the witness for Christ never does. Since the claims of Christ are always on trial, court is perpetually in session, and we remain under oath. For the Christian, deception is never an option. It wasn’t an option for Jesus.

One of the most astounding assessments of Christ is this summary: “He had done nothing wrong, and he had never lied” (Isaiah 53:9). Jesus was staunchly honest. His every word accurate, His every sentence true. No cheating on tests. No altering the accounts. Not once did Jesus stretch the truth. Not once did He shade the truth. Not once did He avoid the truth. He simply told the truth. No deceit was found in His mouth.

And if God has His way with us, none will be found in ours. He longs for us to be just like Jesus. His plan is to shape us along the lines of his Son (Romans 8:28). Examine your heart. Ask yourself the tough questions. Do you tell the truth . . . always? If not, start today. Be just like Jesus. Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. What do you think? — Thoughts from reading “Nothing but the Truth” by Max Lucado (Just Like Jesus)

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Happy Valentine’s Day from South Africa Bible College!

I hope that you and your Valentine had a great day just hanging out. While some may think Valentine’s Day was fabricated by the greeting card and flower industry, I do believe there is value in it. The value is that it reminds us to love! I believe this message is important in the world at this time. It has been since the beginning. That is why God sent his one and only son, because he loves and his message is one of love. At SABC they exist to carry out this message of love. To “…bring mankind back to the Father.” As Eddy Nkosi, Dean of Students will say below. Your prayers and support make that possible. Kirk Eason

My Name is Eddy Nkosi. One of my main reasons of teaching at SABS is always about that which Jesus did for us that is that He left heaven. I believe that in Heaven He was ok. He had everything, but He left all that to come down to Earth because He had a mission. The mission was to bring Mankind back to His Father God so that to me is very encouraging and that’s the purpose behind me teaching at SABC to try to do my part to continue to do what Jesus did to be here and impart knowledge to our students.

Our hope is that we teach them so they will be able to go out and teach others and they have been doing that for quite some time now. Your support makes it possible for me and others as well to be able to fulfill that mandate we have which was left by the Lord Jesus Christ, that is to bring mankind back to the Father.

I thank the church in Roscoe Texas who has supported me the last twelve years, I just love them. Supporters faithfully have helped us all to do what we do, that is to teach the students the word of God. Many people have been baptized and know the Lord because of your support. I don’t know what we would be able to accomplish without your support. So thank you so much.

We are so blessed to be partners with SABC in “helping bring mankind back to the Father”. Please continue to pray for them. For the elders, Ken D

“as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.” – 2 Corinthians 1:11

Our congregation has long been involved and supportive in evangelism efforts in the West African nation of Nigeria. Working with World Bible School and local evangelists the gospel is touching lives there. Brother Sylvester Imogoh has been a valuable fellow laborer in the work there. What follows are excerpts from his end of the year report. Remember to help this work by your prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Seminars and Campaigns have been a source of blessing to many of the rural congregations. We had four seminars and seven campaigns this quarter with several hundred at each of the seminars. Lessons are taught and tracts were distributed and many baptisms occurred.

I and my team continue to use WBS as a tool and as part of our campaign efforts. Because American churches and individual Christians are willing to pay the return postage that ensures that everyone can take advantage of the opportunity to learn of Christ, interest continues to increase. With the forms that the Highland Lakes church in Kingsland Texas helped us produce, we are able to recruit more names for Bible studies from schools and villages.

We are right now in the process of completing the printing of my latest 25 tracts. Some of these tracts would be part of the 280,000 tracts I am producing for the Great Workshop in Abak 2016. For the end of Year Widows Relief effort we have purchased and distributed food stuffs to widows on our list, bringing much needed relief to many rural widows at this time of year. We also presented 15 grinding mills to help attain a self-sustenance and joy to many homes and villages.

Nigeria has been facing more and more troubles both economically and socially. In November my wife Sandra narrowly escaped death from an attack by robbers on the bank and police department in Igarra. A few weeks later, burglars broke into our house and stole some money. We need your prayers for safety and security.

In good news, my son Alfred is now in school at University. I thank all who sent some help. There are many small struggling congregations. We seek ways to help them grow or to stay afloat. It is appreciated by many. Sylvester

PREACH THE WORD

istock_000002698721small_3_1_A good friend of mine has been invited time and again to a church with which he has no affiliation to teach and preach. He has been startled to see their enthusiasm for someone who will just open the scriptures and teach them what the Bible says. Apparently they have been forced to eke out their spiritual lives on crumbs of philosophy and psychology garnished with a small dash of a single biblical verse. Their hunger for the Word has led them to invite my friend repeatedly.

Apparently there have been a number of young Apolloses who have put away such childish things as biblical texts and stories. Having thrown the Bible out of the study window, they now speak of immensities and starry galaxies to ears that have grown weary of hearing.

Perhaps a spoonful of Paul’s advice to Timothy has some beneficial healing results: “O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith. Grace be with you” (1 Timothy 6:20-21).

My prayer is that such preachers, like the prodigal son, will begin to be in want. Then they will come to themselves and say “In my Father’s house there are texts enough and to spare.” And they will say, “I will arise and go to the Bible.”

The Gospel remains God’s power to salvation. Therefore, “preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:2-5).

“And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ…” Colossians 4:3

The following continues the latest report from Dennis and Sharon Welch, whom we have the honor of helping support in taking the Gospel to the people of Cambodia. Continue to keep this effort and the efforts of the Gospel worldwide in your daily prayers. For the Elders, Ken D

Teaching at CBS

As from the beginning Dennis enjoys sharing the Bible with those eager to receive God’s Word. Non-Governmental Organization, Cambodia Christian Ministries (http:// cambodiaministries.org/) also has a Bible school called Cambodia Bible School. Dennis studied Ezra to Esther and Joel to Malachi (the conclusions of Old Testament history and prophecy) with the students over the course of six weeks. Our prayer is that these young men will grow in faith and love so that many will hear and believe the gospel through their words and their good works.

2nd Annual Church Camp

Brethren from all over Cambodia assembled on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand at a beautiful, remote campground near Srei Ambel, Koh Kong, Cambodia. We sang and laughed and studied and played together over the three -day traditional Khmer Water Festival holiday. This year’s topic “Growing in Faith” led to some great lessons. We look forward to the day when these kinds of events are totally Cambodian planned, supported, administered and directed. Pray that we always walk beside our Cambodian brethren to encourage them from their strengths and from our mutual dependence on God.

16th CBI Graduation

Four more brothers have graduated and been sent out from the Cambodia Bible Institute to preach and teach God’s Word. This brings the count to forty-two graduates. A good post and more photos along with more on the camp above are on the blog of the dean of CBI, Rich Dolan (http:// randrdolan.blogspot.com)

Please join our prayer for those who will believe in Jesus because of the Word shared with them by the graduates of all the Bible Schools.
