THE YEAR AHEAD

Photo by Christina Morillo on Pexels.com

“For who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?” (Ecclesiastes 6:12).

An issue of Time magazine, almost thirty years ago, gave examples of men who tried to do what man cannot do — predict the future. Here are some of these predictions made in the 1900‟s as listed in Time, Fall of 1992:

• Henry Adams, considered to be one of America’s foremost thinkers, said in 1903, “My figures coincide in setting 1950 as the year that the world must smash.”

• In 1901, two years before Kitty Hawk, Wilbur Wright told his brother Orville that man would not fly for another 50 years.

• Not long before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Admiral William Leary told Harry Truman, “This is the biggest fool thing we have ever done…the bomb will never go off.”

• Some even claimed that scientists would create machines that would be able to read our minds!

Here we are years later feeling the same curiosity and anxiety about the future. This time, however, the uncertainty is more far-reaching. Our world has changed dramatically. The year 2020 was like an earthquake and every month since has been like an aftershock. Our laws, our economy, our population, and our entire culture is changing so rapidly that it is hard to make plans for anything.

There is only one way to have peace and clarity in a world that has been turned upside down: hold to God’s unchanging hand and trust in His all-seeing eye. Remember that the Lord said, “I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done” (Isa. 46:9-10).

God has always known everything in our future. Nothing surprises Him. He saw the Civil War, the Great Depression and COVID coming long before they broke into history. He knows every detail of the results of each crisis and works all things for the good of His people (Rom 8:28). We will never be able to see what God sees, but that should not keep us from trusting that He does.

The Bible teaches us not to brag about the future or worry about it. Solomon said, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth” (Prov. 27:1). Jesus said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt. 6:34). We need faith in these turbulent times to keep us from going to either extreme.

The great book of Ecclesiastes gives us wisdom we cannot find anywhere else. It tells us, “That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecc. 1:9). It reminds us of the cycles and phases of life: “To everything there is as season, a time for every purpose under heaven” (Ecc; 3:1).

One of the best things Christians can do these days is to pray for wisdom, curtail television and social media time, and concentrate on the book of Ecclesiastes, and perhaps sing the chorus, of “God Holds the Future in His Hands.”

Each year after the elders approve a new budget, we contact all our fellow workers in the mission field to tell them that we are continuing supporting them and of any changes in their support. We also contacted Mike Udam in Nigeria that it had also been our pleasure to be his partner in this great work for our Lord for many years and were happy to inform him that we planned to continue working with him in 2022. We also were aware that costs are rising in Nigeria and so we had decided to increase our support to him in next year’s budget. This was his response. Keep all our fellow workers in your prayers. For the elders, Ken D

Beloved,

I write to express my deep appreciation of your love and kindness towards me. I am glad that you are willing to support my work and have decided to increase your monthly support for me. My family is grateful for all your support.

I hope to work more hard in the vineyard to please our creator, to whom it is a privilege to be found worthy to serve.

God bless you all and you stay safe in the hands of the Almighty. A picture of my family is here attached. Michael Udam

Last week we also received other news that Mike shared with us on New Year‟s Day that we can rejoice in: We got to the farm today to do harvesting. She walked up to me and said, “Dad I want to be baptized.” She confessed Christ and was immediately baptized for the forgiveness of her sins. Her name is Fortune Udam.

Glory be to God, Mike Udam

GOD CAN’T DO EVERYTHING

These words can sound discouraging.

Doesn’t the Bible say, “For with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37)?

Which way is it?

The same Bible that says nothing is impossible with God also says there is something He cannot do. “It is impossible for God to lie” (Heb. 6:18). God “cannot lie” (Titus 1:2). Lying is against the nature of God. It is contrary to His being. The Bible doesn’t just say God will not lie. It says He cannot lie. God would have to be something other than God in order to lie. He cannot do this. “He cannot deny Himself‟ (2 Tim. 2:13). This means more than saying that God chooses not to lie, that God does not want to lie. It means He cannot. God’s will and His being are inseparable.

Now that we have shown that there is something God cannot do, let us build on that foundation. Given His nature and how He created the world, there are things we struggle with that even God cannot change.

God gives us free will. Everyone chooses between right and wrong, between God and Satan, between heaven and hell. God wants all men to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4), but He will not force anyone because that would take away man’s freedom to choose. Even God cannot make a person love Him if that person doesn’t want to love Him. Love is a choice; it can’t be forced. Even Jesus couldn’t win everybody. After all His teaching, kindness, and miracles, many chose not to accept Him.

When people are mad at God because of all the cruelty, evil, injustice, etc. in the world, they don’t realize what they are demanding. Those same people want to be free to choose. They want to go where they decide and do as they please. They don’t want to be forced or to be made into robots. Yet they expect God to be able to give man free will without the possibility of him sinning. He cannot do this. Either man has free will or he does not. We know that God made us so that we choose (Josh. 24:15; Deut. 30:15-20; Heb. 11:24-26). When people blame God for the evil in the world, they are expecting God to do what He cannot do.

But God can do things that seem to be impossible. That is the context of Luke 1:37. From a human standpoint, a virgin conceiving a child without knowing a man was not possible. But from God’s point of view it was.

The Lord doesn’t have to work a miracle to do amazing things. His providential hand can make seemingly hopeless situations work out for good. This is why we must be careful in our own reasoning. We may think a situation is impossible, but with God it is not. Sometimes we don’t know all the circumstances and variables. But God does, and that is why we should trust Him. He Himself says He cannot violate His own being, but He can do many things that seem impossible to us.

During the last two years we have been blessed to help support Kaylee Hankins in the Adventures in Missions program through Sunset Int. Bible Inst. and her service in Wichita Falls and Lubbock. We have watched her grow as a servant of God. Her AIM time and our financial support came to an end in December, but we want to wish her well and continue praying for her. This is from her final report. For the elders, Ken D

Hey guys! I hope this newsletter finds you well! I hope each of you had a fantastic holiday! This is my last newsletter that I’ll be sending. I have finished my AIM time here in Lubbock! I will be graduating in March of 2022! However, just because I finished my AIM time, doesn’t mean my adventure is over! I hope you find my newsletter encouraging! I’m looking forward to continuing my walk with God and continuing to serve Him! I have been blessed by each of you and your support spiritually and financially! Thank you for staying with me and watching me grow. You’ve each made an impact in my life with your constant love and prayers. I can’t thank you enough! I’m tender for this ending, but my heart is so full with new beginnings. God bless 🙂

COMING TO A CLOSE

Hey guys! I hope this final newsletter finds you well! I have been so incredibly blessed by God and His immutable mercies. He has changed my life immensely this past 2 years, just as when I first came to know Him when I was a little girl. I became tough and firm in my faith; rooted deeply in Him. I’ve also gained a new perspective and become tender for God’s loved people. Many people watched me grow up in the Lord, eager for more and constantly searching in His Word. Just because my AIM time has come to an end doesn’t mean I stopped searching & serving. I will continue to do service work in my community with people I love and continue to grow those personal relationships I have made. As you can imagine, my classmates and I have been through the thick of it. With everything happening so fast, it feels like I just started Aim registration yesterday.

However, we remained strong and grew our confidence in God despite how many difficult events approached us. I can’t wait to graduate on March 12th. Many of my classmates have made it home or on their way soon! Please be praying for them as they go through the next chapter in life!

Every day a song plays in my heart. It goes like this:

“I’m fully known and loved by You

You won’t let go no matter what I do. And it’s not one or the other,

It’s hard truth and ridiculous grace

To be known fully known and loved by You. I’m fully known and loved by You”.

It serves me as a reminder of comfort in hard times. “Often we have to endure hurt, suffering, and pain to learn perseverance and to understand God’s plan for us.”

NEW BEGINNINGS

I’m excited and looking forward to new beginnings! Next year will be full of them and I’m eager to continue my *adventure*. It will never end! I will start college in August, but I will continue serving at Lubbock Impact, the Children’s Home of Lubbock, and with my church family.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ME.

I HAVE BEEN BLESSED BY EVERYTHING YOU’VE SACRIFICED.

YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH ME MEANT THE WORLD TO ME.

I HAVE AN AMAZING GODLY FAMILY.

Still Following, Kaylee H

ON SALE NOW!

Photo by Artem Beliaikin on Pexels.com

The holidays are almost over. Everyone will soon be settling back into a rhythm that will take most people through the remainder of the winter and through the first part of spring. However, every day I checked my ―junk email account, I saw hundreds of email, before Christmas, with subject lines from hundreds of different companies such as this: ―Christmas sale! You don’t want to miss this event.” “Treat yourself NOW!” “Don’t miss an EXTRA 40% off year end.” After months of Christmas sales and shopping and spending, my thought at seeing these is to ask, ―really???”

Just once I‘d like to see a company advertise and send me an email that says, ―Andy, you have everything you need. Don‘t buy anything else from us for a while or ―Andy, you spend enough during the holidays, please disregard this ad or ―Be content with what you have. Don‘t open me. Dare I to dream?

That message of being content and staying put and being happy with what you have will, in fact, not be found in many of the places we go in this world. Indeed, even many God-fearing people will fear ―missing out‖ on the next great thing more than they will dedicate themselves to being content with what they have. You know what the Bible calls that? In a word: idolatry. Yes, the same word that‘s associated with bowing down and worshipping a statue or totem is the same word that the apostle Paul associates with a mind that is constantly scanning the ads for the ―newer‖ and ―better‖ or the ―great sale‖ to come. Read Colossians 3:5 very carefully, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”

For Christians who wish to keep their minds on heavenly things, they (we) must be aware of the desire to find happiness and fulfillment in earthly things (see Colossians 3:1-2). There will always be another CLEARANCE SALE. There will always be another event that ―You won‘t wanna miss. There will always be another place ready and all too willing to ―save you money. Yet, these places never will be a substitute for the God who says, “Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). What a promise. What a deal! Act now.

Dear Brethren,

This letter from you is such WONDERFUL NEWS that it kept Sandra and I from sleeping for several hours last night.

First, I want to thank you so sincerely for the kindness in your hearts to have given me such great support for many years now. I don’t know what we could do, or how we could be coping without your support. I am sure that God in His providence knew that I would need you to stand behind my work in Nigeria in such a strong way, and so He planned and made sure we got together. [Otherwise, I do not know any other explanation]

This is not the first time you have given raises in your support of my work. And you have always done so from thoughtful considerations, and not because I am so good in asking you. For this, I am humbled and most thankful. [I can’t ask for more]

The situation in Nigeria at this time is so frustrating. The economic and social conditions are simply horrible to say the least. So I feel so blessed to have brethren over there who are thinking about my condition here. May God alone take all the glory for everything we are able to do in His name and in His vineyard here on earth. I want you to know that so many other Christians and non-Christians are benefiting from these funds by way of benevolences. Right now, it has become a culture that I have to have more in my pockets every Sunday because of the sight of hungry and sick members

The bore hole water you provided for me and for my family years ago is still serving the community around me. And this is bringing much glory to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

I know that there is no way I can thank you enough for the kindness you have been showing to me by way of financial support. And I have resolved to spend all my energy and intellect to continue in efforts to promote the gospel of Christ. [That is my best way of expressing my gratitude for undeserved favors I am getting from you all].

And I ask that you all continue in prayers for me and for my family, for safety and security as we labor in these trying times.

My sincere appreciation to all the saints, Sylvester Imogoh

WHAT ARE WE TO DO WITH CHRISTMAS?

Christmas – what are we going to do with it? Some say, “We need to put Christ back into Christmas.” Others say, “Christ was never meant to be in Christmas.” Some celebrate it as a religious holiday. Other celebrate it as a secular holiday. Other do not celebrate it at all. What does God say about it?

God has not authorized the church to celebrate Christmas as an official religious holiday. In fact, Paul condemned those who were binding religious holidays (Gal. 4:9-11).

What about individuals honoring Christmas? Paul said in Rom. 14:5-6, “One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord.” Paul is not speaking about honoring the Lord on Sunday, because God has already set aside that day for us to honor Him (1 Cor. 16:1- 2; Acts 20:7; Heb. 10:25). This passage teaches that if someone wants to honor God in some way on a day other than Sunday he or she may do so. He has the liberty to do so, but he cannot bind that day on anyone else. Parallel to that special day, if one wants to honor God by remembering Christ’s birth or some other aspect of God on December 25th, he has that liberty, but he cannot bind that on anyone else.

So, what is the application from all of this? If you want to honor Christmas as a way to honor God, you have that right, but you can’t bind that on anyone else (Rom. 12:5-6). The church cannot publicly have Christmas as a special religious holiday because God has not authorized it to be done.

But, there is a practical side of Christmas. Let’s promote the spirit that comes from Christmas. It is a time of families getting together. It is a time of giving gifts. It is a time of joy. All of those benefits are needed year-round. Let’s also take the opportunity to correct some false teaching that is done about Christ and Christmas. People are more open to learning about Jesus now than probably any other time of the year. Let’s teach and correct them in a spirit of love (Eph. 4:15), not in a spirit of condemnation with a “holier than thou” attitude.

I hope that you and your family will have a wonderful Christmas time, however you decide to use it!

Dear brethren, Thank you for your contribution in support of P.J. Krupalini in India. God is always good, even more than we can imagine. Before we know we have a problem, He has worked out a solution. Before we were born, He had provided us a way to be forgiven of sin. He has planned a wonderful place for us to live with him eternally. There are many ways of sharing this with others. When the church has a good reputation in the community, people around us are more likely to listen to God’s word. One of the places this is happening in India in the town where the Grace Tailoring school is located, Kondapalli. Andrea Pradesh.

This month Mary, the director of GTS, wrote the following. We are doing well by the grace of God and hope the same for you. This school is running successfully. We were taking all the precautions of COVID-19. We use the mask and the sanitizer while the class as well as when we go outside. All our students are aware of this knowledge. May God bless each one who stretches forth their hands to run this school successfully. Your efforts are behind the success. As of this letter, two people, one boy and one girl are baptized. We are so happy. Souls all over the world are precious to God. Whether they are in India or our next-door neighbors. May we be the kind of church we see in Jerusalem just after its beginning, lovingly sharing and being evangelistic. Your love for Lost Souls is changing the world. One person at a time. REASONS TO REJOICE!

Photo by Dayvison de Oliveira Silva on Pexels.com

The Bible speaks a number of times regarding rejoicing. David once stated, “This is the day which the Lord has made,” and then he added, “We will rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 118:24).

Why isn’t that just as true today as the day David wrote it? A celebrated writer once wrote, “Every new day is a miracle.” The point: “The Lord did not owe us another day, but He gave it to us.”

In the days of Nehemiah, when the people of God had combined their efforts in a great cause, they were coaxed to rejoice, and were reminded: “the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Neh. 8:10). Then the people responded with great rejoicing “because they now understood the words that had been made known to them” (Neh. 8:12).

Even in the shadow of the hideous cross, Jesus told the disciples, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Of course, they were not glad that Jesus had to suffer so, but were to rejoice at the happy results — their redemption (cf. Eph. 1:7; Rom. 3:24-25).

It is recorded of the early church that they “received their food with glad and generous hearts” (Acts 2:46, ESV).

In the marvelous book of Philippians, we read that Paul counseled Christians to “rejoice in the Lord” (Phil. 3:1); and then a chapter later repeated, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I will say rejoice” (Phil. 4:4). The Thessalonians were instructed similarly, to “rejoice always” (1 Thess. 5:16).

What a wonderful reason Jesus gave the early disciples to rejoice when He said, “rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

Have we ever thought that when we are told to “rejoice,” that it implies making a conscious effort to do so? Happiness is not automatic — it’s a choice

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Phil. 4:4)

Reflection & More . . .

That yearly, scrumptious Holiday Luncheon

Is not just meant for joyous munchin’ . . .

Therefore this year, who would appear?

But two merry Santas and one lonely Reindeer.

One Santa, so merry, led us in great song,

The other one supported, intoning along.

When the Santa got ready the gifts to give away,

The Reindeer took action without much delay.

In order to take the heaviest bag,

He jumped on the challenge, He did not much lag.

(And He lugged other bags,

and others helped, too!)

Though the gifts were meant to be a reward,

This recipient feels strongly to give her regard

To those who arranged and brought to success

This fun-filled occasion that others did bless.

BEAUTIFUL FOOTNOTES

This is a report from our brother Sylvester Imogoh on a recent Bible lectership at their congregation in Nigeria. Please continue to pray for these efforts to spread the gospel and for those who are involved. For the elders, Ken D

Our Bible Lectureship yesterday (Nov 27) was very good. Attendance was 293 adults. There were 110 children so we had to arrange them to have Bible class separately in the Children Building. Everything worked out very well.

The lessons were good. We baptized 2 after the program. And we baptized 2 more after worship today from among the visitors (of the 293 adults, 93 were invited persons who are not yet members of the church). We are already receiving reports in the community of how impressed those who attended were because they learned lessons they have not been hearing elsewhere. One of the persons we baptized today is physically challenged. She works with crutches.

We have been working crazy schedules. two of our brothers went down before we finished yesterday. One of the first speaker Daniel Amaize has had a fever, And it got worse and the second brother is the interpreter Ayo Alade. This morning I went to visit them in their homes. Daniel could not come to church this morning because he was on IV infusion but the other brother was in church. I will give you more information in time.

Give my regards to everyone, Sylvester
