Rewriting History

Those who would like for our nation to move further and further from the faith of the founding fathers have an agenda. The agenda is what has been called “revision history”— it is an effort to rewrite history to make it what they want it to be rather than what it is. The revisionists would have us believe the fathers of our country were simply deists who had no convictions about God or the Bible. It is difficult for them to make their case, however, since the name of God and quotations from Scripture are seen in public places throughout our nation’s capital, largely due to the influence of those early Americans. There is no doubt that some of the founders were deists (those who believe in God, but One who gives no revelation, who is not involved in the world), but most were men of faith. For example, John Adams said that men must be influenced by morality and religion because, “Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence said that religion must be the “foundation for a useful education.” Governor Morris, penman and signer of the Constitution stated: “I believe that religion is the only solid base of morals and that morals are the only possible support of free government.” John Jay, the original Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, affirmed that “the Bible is the best of all books, for it is the word of God.” George Washington believed that “religion and morality are the essential pillars of civil society.” The battle of modern day radical secularists can misrepresent and misquote founders, but their words of faith cannot be rebutted.

In a similar way, some church leaders take the words of the early preachers of the American Restoration Movement out of context in an effort to make them say what they never meant. For example, some of the men who in the early 19th century began to move away from denominationalism and to make the appeal to be Christians only, the way the Word of God states it, to be members only of the church that Jesus wanted and did establish, and to speak as the Bible speaks, have been misrepresented by present day “church historians.” We have been told that they believed the pious un-immersed were to be accepted into the fellowship of the church just like the immersed, and that the worship of God could be altered to meet the desires of men and not the wishes of God.

Historians must be true to the facts! Any effort to rewrite the history of a nation or the history of the church as our Lord Jesus Christ established it, discredits the historians and assumes that none of us know our history. This Sunday evening, October 28th, is the time again, when, after our worship assembly, we enjoy meeting for our monthly Fellowship Meal. Hosts & hostesses are: John & Tina Brewer, Josie & Adam Garcia and David & Sheri Zoller.   Remember, that we will not have our regular Fellowship Meal on the last Sunday in November. As is our custom, we will have a combined holiday meal on the first Sunday in December.

Christians, Governments and Elections

Christians living in a democracy enjoy great privileges and incur serious responsibilities. There are duties to God and duties to the government under which we live.

God’s Word supplies adequate information as to our duties to our government. Notice the following excerpts from Scripture:

Daniel 4:17 “…so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men.” God’s rule includes governments and leaders.

Philippians 3:20 “…our citizenship is in heaven.” Christian have duel citizenship, the most important being our citizenship in the kingdom of heaven.

Act 5:29 We must obey God rather than men.” Whenever government demands of us that which is contrary to God’s will, we must obey God rather than man’s law.

Mark 12:17 “Then Jesus said to them ‘Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”. That establishes that we are obligated to meet our duties to government as well as duties to Jehovah.

I Peter 2:13-17 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men; whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by Him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.” Subjection and obedience to all levels of government is a vital part of our religious duty.

I Timothy 2:1-3 “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone — for kings, and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Savior.” We owe our leaders our prayers. We want them to guarantee our safety and tranquility, in return we owe them our prayers for their well-being.

Romans 13:1-7 “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong….for he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, the respect; if honor, then honor.”

With Sympathy

Gay Burke’s sister, Olivia Gardner, passed away on Tuesday, September 25th, after having suffered with severe cancer problems for some time. She was buried at a cemetery close to where she grew up. Our heartfelt love, prayers and sympathy go out to Gay, all the family and friends. Gay, in return, expresses to the congregation her thanks for all of our prayers and concerns while Olivia was still alive.

Children’s Ministry Meeting

There will be a meeting today at 3 pm in the Fellowship Room concerning our educational program for children. This meeting is for all our current teachers of the children’s classes. We also invite anyone who is interested in getting involved with the children’s ministry to come as well!

Faith Builders

Not long ago, a preacher was asked: “How do you build your faith?” Actually, the question was, “How do I learn to have more faith in my God?” For this reason, let us take a closer look at God’s Word and see if we can figure this one out together. Get out your Bible and investigate.

We know that “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). In John 8:31-32, Jesus said, “If you continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Consider Paul’s words in Romans 12:2: “…and don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” It looks like any person who wants to build his/her faith is going to have to work at it. It’s not wise to read an instruction manual on how to operate a milking machine if you are wanting to learn to fly an airplane and it’s ridiculous to assume that you can turn to worldly, humanistic teaching to learn how to run your life. Only in God’s Word do we see how He wants His children to live, love and walk on this earth!

The Bible works! But you have to read it, study it, ingest it, make it a part of you. That’s what it means to “RENEW YOUR MIND” (Romans 12:2).

Something else to consider. After you’ve learned it and internalized it, God expects you to display it. God expects you to display your KNOWLEDGE with ACTION! “But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:23); “Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin!” (James 4:17)

So if you want to be Christ-like, you must become an humble servant (Philippians 2:5-9). — from BULLETIN DIGEST

ON CHOOSING LEADERS

Admittedly, Acts 6:3 is not discussing the appointment of elders. Usually, the men chosen to wait tables at Jerusalem are dubbed “deacons”, although Luke does not so designate them. The principles of selecting leaders laid down here are nonetheless applicable in the church’s quest for new elders to shepherd God’s flock.

One principle is congregational recognition. A man chosen to lead must be perceived by his peers as a leader. It is foolish to thrust a man into leadership of a voluntary organization like the church if he is unknown to the group, or distrusted by them

Whom do you see as a potential Elder of this congregation? Obviously, not all of us would compile the precise, same list of possible additional Overseers. There should be, however, some consensus on whom we are willing to follow.

A second guideline is a spiritual quality of life that equips one for spiritual guidance of God’s family. Some men are good leaders, but not for the church! Others make great spiritual contributions in guiding the church, who could never manage big business. The real determinate for a Shepherd of God’s flock is not business acumen, but a genuine relationship with God and a meaningful fellowship with God’s people.

The apostle Paul understood the importance of having quality men to direct the church. That is why he gave detailed instructions in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. We would do well to ponder deeply these scriptures as we propose men to be our Pastors.

A third principle in appointing leaders is the approval of those already in leadership. In Acts 6, the apostles approved the congregation’s choice. In Titus 1, the evangelist apparently was to direct the selection of Bishops for a church which had none. In an established congregation, with men already serving as elders, the current elders should have some say as to the acceptability of proposed appointees.

As we select more elders for our church, these guidelines are being followed. We trust that congregational recognition and elder approval of spiritually qualified men will provide us with additional overseers to guide this fellowship.

The elders are thinking about choosing new elders and deacons in the near future. You may want to think about the qualifications of elders and deacons as presented by God in the New Testament. You may want to think about who fits these serious qualifications before God and the members of this congregation. If you have somebody in mind, please talk to this man (or men), if they would be willing to serve in those positions. There will be a box available pretty soon into which you can put a note with your choice of name(s).

APATHY: The Greatest Enemy of Our Freedom (Part 2)

This is the second and last installment of the article that appeared in last week’s bulletin (borrowed from the “Christian Woman” magazine, written by Debbie Dupuy.)

What Does the Bible Say? One of the most important things we can do for our nation is to be involved in the political process. Why? Because “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” wrote the Psalmist in Psalm 33:12. “Therefore to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4:17).

Romans 13:1-4 clearly explains the Christian’s responsibility as a citizen along with the role of the ruling official. According to verse 4, those who govern are God’s ministers for the good of society, and they serve as avengers to execute wrath on those who practice evil. In this country, where we have the unique privilege of choosing our leaders, it is important that we vote for people who will bring about good in our nation rather than uphold what is evil.

Nowhere in the Bible do we find God’s people to be unconcerned with what their government is doing. Nowhere do we find that we are to be indifferent to the candidates and to their beliefs about what is right according to God’s law.

In the book of Esther, we are reminded of a young Jewish girl who stood up for her nation, who stood for what was right – even if it should cost her life – and who believed in the One who could deliver her people. Much like today, evil laws were passed by those in power, and bribes were taken (Esther 3:8-15). Esther’s decision was to get involved! She did not remain silent, and she risked getting involved by going before the king to incite positive change (4:4-17; 5:1-2). We remember Mordecai’s words to her in Esther 4:14: “Yet who knows whether you have come into the kingdom for such a time as this?” I believe if Mordecai and Esther were with us today, they would say those same words to us: “You are here at this time in history for such a time as this. Get involved, stand for righteousness, and uphold God’s Law.”

German theologian Martin Niemöller once made this comment about the apathy of German intellectuals in the midst of Nazi power: “First they came for the communists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist. Then they came for the trade unions, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, but I didn’t speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.” Niemöller’s remarks remind us of the truth behind the often-quoted adage of Irish politician Edmund Burke: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

What Can We Do? (1) We must participate in the process. Register to vote! If you are registered, make sure you vote. It is a privilege and blessing to be able to exercise this freedom. We must remember that “bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote,” according to American magazine editor George Jean Nathan.

(2) Make sure you have the facts and become informed. Ephesians 4:25 exhorts us to “speak truth with [our neighbors], for we are members of one another.” We can become informed about where candidates stand on issues and how their views align with God’s Word. When you are informed, inform others. Do not remain silent!

(3) We must trust God and pray. “And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding” (Daniel 2:21). Romans 13:1 reminds us that “there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”

We must never show panic or fear, but lean on God and trust His will. James 5:16 reminds us that the prayers of the righteous produce much. Pray, do not fear. God is in control.

The elections of 2012 are fast approaching, dear fellow Christians. We are needed at this time in our nation’s history to stand apart from the crowd and to speak up when many are telling us to remain silent. Do not be! Appreciate God’s gift of democracy, free speech and voting rights.

Historically speaking, previous democracies have only lasted about 200 years. It seems that after that span of time, people become complacent, take things for granted and are tired of the “rut” they are in. Change seems to be welcome. And there are other ideas and philosophies that play into this. So let us do what is our civic duty. In the end, though, God will allow in this nation what is according to His will and our good; it may not be what we want and expect; so read again esp. Romans 13:1. But we are always expected by God to continue in our Christian walk and do our duty.

SPAGHETTI DINNER

There will be a Spaghetti Dinner at the Kingsland Convention & Community Center, 3451 Rose Hill Drive, Sunday, October 7th, from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm. All the proceeds will go to benefit the Kingsland Community. On the menu are: spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert, tea or water. Cost is $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for children up to 6 years.

Attend and enjoy not having to cook and wash dishes, while supporting a good cause.
